Fall Educational Conference
October 17-18, 2014
Hilton Garden Inn-Indianapolis Airport
Hosted by Aqua Systems
This year’s Fall Educational Conference in Indianapolis promises to be our best yet---and those who were in Ann Arbor and
Kansas City last fall know what high standards those conferences set. Here’s what’s on the agenda in Indy:
Friday, October 17, 2014
Noon – 1 PM: Automating your QC On A Budget: Karen Paarlberg and Niagara’s IT Consultants will provide an overview of
their systems, and take us through every step in the design, implementation, and application of their QC systems, and their
benefits from the system. Karen is a graduate of Purdue University with a major in Food Science, and serves as Quality
Assurance Manager of the Niagara Indianapolis facility.
1 PM – 2 PM: Treatment for Dissolved Solids: Ion Exchange and Reverse Osmosis. Dr. Tanya Lubner, Director of Education
and Certification Programs for the Water Quality Association, will lead this session, focusing on which factors influence the
operation of two treatment technologies that address total dissolved solids concentration: ion exchange and reverse osmosis.
Dr. Lubner oversees the development of new program areas, creation of educational materials and exams and is currently
restructuring WQA’s educational materials and courses into an online-delivered modular education program (MEP) and
searchable encyclopedia (Knowledge Base). Her Ph.D. is in inorganic chemistry from the University of Wyoming.
2 PM-3 PM: The Cost of Quality Control: Steve Tischler, NTL Labs. This one-hour presentation will explore the often used,
but frequently misunderstood, concept of “The Cost of Quality”. The presentation will explore topics such as Prevention
Costs, Appraisal Costs, Internal and External Failure Costs, and the resulting Total Cost of Quality. Examples specific to the
Bottled Water Industry will be provided.
3:30 PM – 5 PM: Tour: Aqua Systems. Tour of bottling line, purification systems, deionization plant, and filter and softener
fabrication facilities.
6 PM – 9 PM: Gala Reception and Dinner: NCAA Hall of Champions.
Saturday, October 18, 2014
8:30 – 9:30 AM: Taste and Odor Characteristics of Bottled Water: Laura Current of Niagara will lead this session. Common
descriptors of taste and odor problems in bottled water will be reviewed. Participants will learn how water quality and
packaging materials can impact the taste and odor of their finished product. Laura is a veteran of over 20 years in the Bottled
Water industry, and is considered one of the premier authorities on bottled water production and quality control issues.
9:30 AM –Noon: Living with FSMA, Part III: If you haven’t yet joined the CSBWA “Living with FSMA” education seminar series,
you can start now. Begin with a review if Parts I & II and get ready for the full Part III Session, which will take place right after
the Part I & II Review. This comprehensive four-part seminar has been designed to prepare you for the new regulations tied to
the Food & Safety Modernization Act. We’ll cover topics that combine to give you, the bottler, a comprehensive Food Safety
Plan! This will be a hands-on workshop designed to give you the practical tools necessary to ensure that you are able to
comply with all the new regulations.
During Session III, these chapters will be covered:
• Chapter 7
Corrective Actions
• Chapter 8
Verification
• Chapter 9
Record keeping
• Chapter 10
Preventative Controls
