State Boys’ and Girls’ Soccer Tournament
St. Paul Como Park boys only team to defend title
The boys of St. Paul Como Park, in Class A, are the only returning champions to defend their title at the
2014 State Soccer Tournament. Of the 32 qualified teams, only six teams played in the 2013 state tournament.
Eight of the 32 teams are first-time qualifiers. Anoka is the only school that has qualified both a boys’ team and
a girls’ team.
St. Paul Como Park is the No. 4 seed for Class A boys. East Ridge of Woodbury is the No. 1 seed for
Class AA boys. Minneapolis Washburn is the No. 1 seed for Class A girls. Eagan is the No. 1 seed for Class AA
girls.

Class A Boys Highlights

No. 1 Seed (Section 5) DeLaSalle, Minneapolis (17-1-1) vs. (Section 4) Mahtomedi (12-3-4) — 5:30
p.m., Oct. 23, at Chisago Lakes High School in Lindstrom: The fifth-ranked Islanders of DeLaSalle are making
their first state tournament appearance. The Islanders scored 85 goals while allowing just 21. Junior Michael
Wageman leads the team with 18 goals and 10 assists. Senior goalkeeper Nicholai Anderson-Pena was 13-1-0
before suffering a season-ending broken leg in the second-last game of the regular season. Ninth-grader Will
Hagg has stepped up and gone 4-0-1 since. The ninth-ranked Zephyrs of Mahtomedi are making their sixth
appearance and won the 2009 title. The team has scored 39 times and allowed opponents 20 goals. Senior Alec
Maixner has a team-leading 16 points on 9 goals and 7 assists. Junior goalkeeper Mikael Lange has played the
bulk of the minutes in the net and has a 422-minute scoreless streak in progress. He and junior Paul Melancon
have combined for 8 shutouts so far.
No. 4 Seed (Section 3) St. Paul Como Park (14-4-2) vs. No. 5 Seed (Section 6) Chaska (13-5-0) —
7:30 p.m., Oct. 23, at Chisago Lakes High School in Lindstrom: The defending champion St. Paul Como Park
Cougars are making their third consecutive and overall appearance. They were unranked in the final coaches
association poll. The team has averaged 2.65 goals per game while allowing only 0.85 per game. Senior Will
Kidd leads the Cougars with 18 goals and 12 assists. Senior goalkeeper John Wenger protects the net and has
recorded 11 shutouts. Also unranked, the Hawks of Chaska are making their first tournament appearance. The
Hawks have averaged 2.78 goals per game while allowing opponents 1.67. Juniors Joshua Prater and Andrew
Leck each have 13 points on 10 goals and 3 assists. Senior Ramiro Gomez has 15 points on 4 goals and 11
assists. Junior Isaac Thompson has played every minute in goal and has made 130 saves.
No. 2 Seed (Section 8) St. Cloud Apollo (18-0-2) vs. (Section 1) Rochester Lourdes (15-5-0) — 5:30
p.m., Oct. 22, at Osseo High School: The Eagles of St. Cloud Apollo are making their third appearance. They
were the No. 2 team in the final coaches poll. The Eagles combined for 146 goals thus far. Two seniors lead the
scoring attack, each with 28 points. Aidan Sim-Campos has 19 goals and 9 assists while Abdiaziz Handule has
16 goals and 12 assists. Senior goalkeeper Cooper Gray minds the net and has 94 saves. The unranked Eagles of
Rochester Lourdes are making their fifth consecutive and 13th overall appearance. Rochester Lourdes won titles
in 1998, 1999 and 2012, but lost in the 2013 quarterfinals. The Eagles averaged 2.75 goals per game while
allowing 0.75 per game. Senior Hadi Berbari leads the team with 12 goals and 6 assists. Senior Nicolas
Villarraga has seen the most time in net and has 110 saves. The team has recorded 12 shutouts.
No. 3 Seed (Section 2) Mankato West (18-1-0) vs. (Section 7) Monticello (13-4-2) — 7:30 p.m., Oct.
22, at Osseo High School: The No. 3-ranked Mankato West Scarlets return to make their fifth appearance.
Sophomore Jacob Makela leads the Scarlets with 35 goals and 14 assists, tops in the state for goals and points.
Sophomore goalkeeper Tyler Defor minds the net. The unranked Magic of Monticello are making their first
tournament appearance. The Magic averaged 3.6 goals per game while giving up 1.2 per game. Junior Taylor
Modaff has 20 points on 12 goals and 8 assists and senior Joe Munsterteiger has 15 goals and 2 assists. Junior
Evan Bartlett gets the most minutes in goal.
Class AA Boys Highlights
No. 1 Seed (Section 4) East Ridge, Woodbury (19-0-0) vs. (Section 7) Duluth East (12-3-4) — 5:30
p.m., Oct. 22, at Chisago Lakes High School, Lindstrom: The Raptors of East Ridge were the No. 1 team in the
final coaches poll and are making their first tournament appearance. They defeated Rochester John Marshall 4-3
to open the season. The Raptors are led by senior Connor Stevenson who has 28 goals and 13 assists. Senior
Kevin Collodora has the most minutes in net and has made 45 saves while giving up only 7 goals. The
Greyhounds of Duluth East, who were unranked in the final coaches poll, are making their third appearance and
enter with a 15-game unbeaten streak. Their two previous appearances were as a Class A team. The Greyhounds
lost to Minnetonka 8-2 early in the season. Duluth East averaged 3.69 goals per game while allowing 1.14 per
game. Seniors Matt Sorensen and Darby Henderson lead the team. Sorensen has 24 points on 9 goals and 15
assists while Henderson has 22 points on 17 goals and 5 assists. Senior Hugh VanScoy handles goalkeeping
duties and has 101 saves and has recorded 9 shutouts.
No. 4 Seed (Section 6) Wayzata (13-3-3) vs. No. 5 Seed (Section 1) Rochester John Marshall (13-32) — 7:30 p.m., Oct. 22, at Chisago Lakes High School, Lindstrom: The Trojans of Wayzata return for their
12th appearance and were ranked fifth in the coaches poll. Wayzata dropped two games to conference rival
Minnetonka 4-2 and 2-1. The Trojans averaged 2.11 goals per game while allowing opponents 1. Senior
Clayton Smith leads Wayzata with 10 goals and 11 assists. Junior Troy Louwagie minds the net and has given
up 19 goals. Senior forward Clay Elmore also kicks for the school’s football team. The Rockets of Rochester
John Marshall were unranked in the final coaches poll and are making their second appearance. The Rockets
lost to East Ridge 4-3 in their season opener. The Rockets averaged 2.94 goals per game while allowing 1.33
per game. Senior Ayo Adebayo leads the team with 19 goals and 16 assists, the second consecutive season he
led the team in scoring. Senior Ben Kellner is the primary goalkeeper and has made 146 saves.
No. 2 Seed (Section 5) Maple Grove (19-0-0) vs. (Section 3) Rosemount (7-8-3) — 5:30 p.m., Oct. 21,
at Osseo High School: The second-ranked Crimson of Maple Grove are making their fifth tournament
appearance. Maple Grove defeated conference rival Anoka 5-1 this season. The Crimson averaged 3.4 goals per
game while allowing 0.3 per game or a total of 7 all season. Senior Ben Zaver has 17 points on 9 goals and 8
assists. Senior Ben Nelson is the Crimson goalkeeper. The unranked Irish of Rosemount are making their
second appearance. The Irish are led by senior Kohl Sparrman with 8 goals and 9 assists. Junior goalkeeper
Michael Urban has the most minutes in the net and has made 53 saves.
No. 3 Seed (Section 2) Minnetonka (16-0-2) vs. (Section 8) Anoka (12-6-1) — 7:30 p.m., Oct. 21, at
Osseo High School: The third-ranked Skippers of Minnetonka return for their third appearance. The Skippers
defeated conference rival Wayzata twice, 4-2 and 2-1. Minnetonka provided no statistics. The unranked Anoka
Tornadoes return to make their 13th appearance and won the 2007 title. Conference rival Maple Grove defeated
the Tornadoes 5-1. Anoka averaged 2.21 goals per game while allowing 1.26 per game. Junior Connor Schaaf
has 6 goals and 12 assists to lead the team. Sophomore Jake Peterson has the bulk of the minutes in the net and
has a 1.35 goals-against average.
Class A Girls Highlights
No. 1 Seed (Section 3) Minneapolis Washburn (18-0-0) vs. (Section 8) Sartell-St. Stephen (13-3-4)
— 5:30 p.m., Oct. 23, at St. Cloud State University: The Minneapolis Washburn Millers, who were the No. 1
team in the final coaches association poll, are returning to make their 11th appearance. The Millers qualified
nine consecutive times from 1981 through 1989 and won the 1981 title. Minneapolis Washburn defeated Orono
1-0 mid-season, has given up only two goals all season and is riding a 15-game shutout streak (16 shutouts
overall). Senior Morgan Cottew leads the Millers with 44 points on 28 goals and 16 assists Three other players
have 11 or more goals and 20+ points Sophomore Taylor Cottew has 80 saves in goal. The unranked Sabres of
Sartell-St. Stephen are making their second consecutive and fourth overall appearance. The team averaged 2.45
goals per game while allowing 0.9 per game. Senior Abby Spanier leads the offense with 10 goals and 13
assists. Sophomore Allie Hemmesch minds the net for the Sabres.
No. 4 Seed (Section 7) Princeton (18-1-0) vs. No. 5 Seed (Section 4) Hill-Murray, Maplewood (9-6-4)
— 7:30 p.m., Oct. 23, at St. Cloud State University: The Tigers of Princeton, unranked by the coaches, are
making their first tournament appearance in just their fifth varsity season. The Tigers scored 62 goals while
allowing opponents 9. Sophomore Alanna Mattson leads the team with 14 goals and 6 assists. Ninth-grader
Eden Betzler minds the net and has 142 saves and recorded 12 shutouts. Every player is involved in a second
sport. The ninth-ranked Hill-Murray Pioneers are making their second consecutive and fifth overall appearance.
The Pioneers averaged 2.26 goals per game while allowing 1.15 per game. Senior Emily Heslin leads the
offense with 11 goals and 10 assists. Senior Sophia Fobaire is the primary goalkeeper.
No. 2 Seed (Section 6) Orono (16-2-1) vs. (Section 1) Dover-Eyota (15-2-1) — 5:30 p.m., Oct. 22, at
Park High School, Cottage Grove: The Spartans of Orono are making their seventh tournament appearance and
won the 2009 title. They were ranked No. 2 in the final coaches poll and one of their losses, 1-0, came against
Minneapolis Washburn. The Spartans averaged 3.95 goals per game while allowing 0.48. Senior Sophie Babo
has 38 points on 28 goals and 10 assists and earned the Class A Ms. Soccer award. She holds all of the school’s
offensive records. Junior Jessica Woessner is the primary goalkeeper and has made 104 saves. Orono has
recorded 13 shutouts. The unranked Eagles of Dover-Eyota are making their first tournament appearance. The
Eagles scored 49 goals while allowing 13. Sophomore Haley Finstuen has 17 points on 10 goals plus 7 assists.
Juniors Megan Hintz and Liz Rovelstad share goalkeeping duties and have a combined 125 saves.
No. 3 Seed (Section 5) Park Center, Brooklyn Park (16-3-0) vs. (Section 2) Albert Lea (12-3-2) —
7:30 p.m., Oct. 22, at Park High School, Cottage Grove: The Pirates of Park Center, who were ranked No. 5 in
the final coaches poll, are making their first tournament appearance. The Pirates scored 42 goals while allowing
18 and defeated nine Class AA teams during the season. Sophomore Jozie Paye leads the offense with 9 goals
and 4 assists. Senior Emily Nelson minds the net and has made 148 saves. The unranked Tigers of Albert Lea
are making their third appearance. The Tigers averaged 2.8 goals per game while allowing 1.1 per game. Senior
Megan Kortan leads the offense with 20 points on 14 goals and 6 assists. Sophomore Kathryn Flaherty is the
primary goalkeeper and has made 76 saves.
Class AA Girls Highlights
No. 1 Seed (Section 3) Eagan (18-0-1) vs. (Section 6) Hopkins (12-5-2) — 5:30 p.m., Oct. 21 at Park
High School, Cottage Grove: The Wildcats of Eagan were the top-ranked team in this year’s final coaches poll
and are making their sixth appearance. During regular-season play No. 2-seeded Lakeville North lost to Eagan
2-0. The Wildcats scored 59 goals while allowing 9. Junior Taylor Kenealy leads the offense with 14 goals and
12 assists. Junior Jordyn Clark and senior Ashley Patyk share goalkeeping duties and have made a combined
122 saves. The unranked Royals of Hopkins are making their inaugural tournament appearance. During the
regular season Hopkins was shut out twice 4-0 and 2-0 by No. 3-seeded and conference rival Eden Prairie. The
Royals averaged 1.73 goals per game while allowing 0.84 per game. Senior Rachel St. Clair has 14 points on 9
goals and 5 assists. Senior Gretchen Patterson is the primary goalkeeper and has made 81 saves.
No. 4 Seed (Section 5) Centennial, Circle Pines (16-1-2) vs. No. 5 Seed (Section 4) Cretin-Derham
Hall, St. Paul (14-5-0) — 7:30 p.m., Oct. 21, at Park High School, Cottage Grove: The fourth-ranked Cougars
of Centennial are making their fourth appearance. Conference rival Anoka defeated Centennial 3-2 early in the
season. The Cougars averaged 2.3 goals per game while allowing 0.31 and recorded 13 shutouts. Junior Nan
Glinsek leads Centennial with 11 goals and 13 assists. Senior Morgan Wirz minds the net. Unranked CretinDerham Hall is making its eighth appearance. The Raiders averaged 2.1 goals per game while giving up 0.7 to
opponents. Senior Lizzie Schneeman, the team’s leading scorer for the past three years, has 14 goals and 9
assists so far. Senior Anna Fobbe is the primary goalkeeper and has made 115 saves. Two-thirds of the Raiders
players are multi-sport athletes.
No. 2 Seed (Section 1) Lakeville North (15-2-1) vs. (Section 8) St. Michael-Albertville (16-3-0) —
5:30 p.m., Oct. 22, at St. Cloud State University: The coaches association’s No. 2-ranked Panthers of Lakeville
North return to make their fourth consecutive and fifth overall appearance. They were the 2013 runners-up and
finished third in 2012. They were 2-0 victims to Eagan this season. The Panthers averaged 2.39 goals per game
while allowing 0.56. Junior Alexis Tousignant leads the offense with 10 goals and 5 assists. Sophomore Taylor
Lock is the primary goalkeeper and has made 55 saves. The Panthers have a team GPA of 3.952 and are on a
13-game winning streak. Eleven of their wins were shutouts. The unranked Knights of St. Michael-Albertville
scored 59 goals while allowing 21. Sophomore Makenzie Langdok is the leading scorer with 10 goals and 8
assists. Senior Anita Thammavongsa is the goalkeeper and has made 133 saves.
No. 3 Seed (Section 2) Eden Prairie (15-2-1) vs. (Section 7) Anoka (9-8-2) — 7:30 p.m., Oct. 22, at St.
Cloud State University: The Eden Prairie Eagles, who were ranked No. 5in the final coaches poll, are making
their third consecutive and ninth overall tournament appearance. They tied for third in the 2013 tournament. The
Eagles twice defeated conference rival Hopkins 4-0 and 2-0 this season. The Eagles averaged 2.44 goals per
game while allowing 0.61. Senior April Bockin, the Class AA Ms. Soccer, has 36 points on 23 goals and 13
assists. Bockin will play for the University of Minnesota in 2015. Sophomore Lindsay Eliasen is the Eagles
goalkeeper and has made 103 saves while recording 11 shutouts. The unranked Tornadoes of Anoka are making
their seventh appearance and won the 1989 title. They were edged 3-2 by conference rival Centennial during the
regular season. The Tornadoes scored 41 goals to 33 by opponents. Senior Kaitlin Beckman leads the offense
with 19 goals and 5 assists. Junior Chantelle Palermo is the primary goalkeeper and has made 135 saves.
The Seeding Process
The seeding process had all 32 coaches of the section champions log onto a special page of the League
Web site. Each coach then ranked the other teams one through seven. The highest and lowest rankings for each
team were discarded, leaving five rankings for each team. From those rankings, the top five teams were seeded.
In conference calls with all eight head coaches of each class and gender, League Associate Director Jody
Redman announced the top five seeds. Coaches association representative Greg Juba blindly drew three teams
to establish the opponent for the top three seeded teams. Numbers four and five automatically play each other.
The Schedule
After this week’s quarterfinal rounds Tuesday through Thursday, all semifinal games will be played at
Husky Stadium on the campus of St. Cloud State University.
Class AA boys’ semifinals will be played at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 28, followed by the
Class AA girls’ semifinals at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. The Class A boys will take to the field at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. on
Wednesday, October 29, and the girls will follow at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.
The tournament concludes on Thursday, Oct. 30, with all championship games being played at Husky
Stadium. The Class A boys will play at 9:30 a.m. and the Class A girls will compete at noon. The Class AA
boys’ will play at 2:30 p.m. and the girls will follow at 5 p.m.
All third-place games will be held at Selke Field across the river from Husky Stadium in St. Cloud. That
schedule begins with the Class A boys at 8:30 a.m. and the Class A girls at 10:30 a.m. The Class AA boys will
start at 12:30 p.m. followed by the girls at 2:30 p.m.
