Generator Light-Off milestone reached on NSC 5 James The press of three buttons created a surge of power in the fifth National Security Cutter, which has been relatively quiet since it was christened in August. Representatives of the Coast Guard Project Residence Office observed as Shipbuilders lit off all three ship service diesel generators for James (WMSL 754) on schedule Oct. 14. “Being able to light the generators shows a significant completion of shipboard systems,” said Jim McKinney, NSC 5 ship program manager. “Having the ability to generate our own power will enable us to operate and further test onboard systems and equipment.” McKinney added that the light-off signifies completion of the fuel, lube, oil, water, intake, exhaust and monitoring systems and shows construction of the machinery space is sufficient for safe operation. “We achieved this milestone through the combined efforts of all crafts, Ship’s Management, Test, Supply Chain, Central Planning and Engineering,” said McKinney. “It takes everyone doing their part and assisting their fellow shipbuilders to achieve such a complex milestone.” NSC 5 ship construction manager Buck Rodgers said he is thoroughly impressed with the ideas that have led to improved ship construction. “The team has really done a superb job of working together and coordinating their efforts toward a common goal,” said Rodgers. “We have taken a ton of lessons learned from prior NSCs and brainstormed ways to improve our overall program performance. Walking the systems as a team and generating an exchange of ideas at every level from a diverse mix of backgrounds and experiences greatly contributed to our current success.” The ship’s ability to produce and control power will be tested in coming months and the electricians who pulled cable and connected the wires and circuitry played a big role in that effort, according to Beth Bodden, Electrical general foreman for NSC 5. “Our deck plate supervision, Richard Morgan, Clifton Quinnie and Woody Dawson and their crews showed excellent leadership and workmanship on meeting all requirements for this milestone light-off,” said Bodden. “Most importantly, everything was done in a safe manner with zero injuries.” Shipbuilders constructing James are now on an intense four month phase of testing to prepare the ship for builder’s trials in early spring. The next milestone, main engine light-off, is scheduled in November. Employee awarded for taking ethical actions Contracts specialist Edgar Maier earned a Level 1 Ethics On-The-Spot Award for demonstrating company values in an extraordinary way during an early industry involvement study for a government customer. When third party private proprietary information was inadvertently provided to Maier, he immediately followed company policy and notified his chain of command and sought and followed guidance about the proper disposition for the information. The On-the-Spot Ethics Recognition Program offers employees a chance to recognize their fellow shipbuilders for showing a high degree of ethical behavior in the workplace.
