KOROLEK - Frances Korolek (nee
Shewchuk) of Theodore, SK,
passed
away
peacefully
on
October 14, 2014 at the Malinowski
House (Yorkton Village, Yorkton &
District Nursing Home). She was
born on July 22, 1925, the eighth
child of Eli and Waselka (nee
Kostachuk) Shewchuk of West Bend,
SK. Frances grew up during the
depression years when life was
hard. She attended Aysgarth
School, completing Grade Eight.
Some of her memories of her
school years were: walking three
miles to school; going to school
during a thunderstorm and having
to cross a fence before lightning
struck again; and her family being
called “Galicians” because they
were Ukrainian. Frances met John
Korolek while visiting her sister,
Mary. Mary’s husband, John
Malinowski and John Korolek were
school
friends.
After
eight
months
of
courtship,
they
got married on July 17, 1943
at the farm of Steve and Patty Korolek. Frances and John then
moved to a farm five miles northeast of Theodore. Their first
house was a one room building made of logs, 14 feet by 14 feet. When
the children started coming, they built a second house where they raised
their five children. In 1982, John and Frances moved into Theodore. John
passed away on October 13, 1996 and Frances continued to live there
until she moved into Malinowski House in February of 2013. Frances
grew a weedless but bountiful garden. She baked bread, cooked six
meals a day and milked cows, all on the same day as a gang of six to
eight men were threshing grain at her place. Company at her farm, at all
hours of the day or night, was a familiar sight and she always put on the
coffee pot with a tasty meal. Many hours of playing cards, “King Pedro”,
with the neighbours were enjoyed by all. Throughout her life, Frances
shared her great love for her children and grandchildren but when the
great-grandchildren started arriving, her comment was “I’M OLD”. She
kept saying this until two days before her passing. Frances’ life slid quickly
downhill after she broke her hip in August of 2014. She will be remembered
for her love for her family, her precise, “everything in order ways”
and how certain personal items were very important to her. Frances was
predeceased by her husband, John (1996); two children, one in infancy
(1957) and a daughter, Caroline (1953); mother, Waselka (1949); father,
Eli (1972); sisters, Jennie (1929), Doris (1989), Anne (1988), Mary
(1998), Rose (2012) and Jean (2012); brothers, John (2001), Bill (2000)
and Matt (2000). Frances is survived by her children, Chris (Robina),
Mervin (Caroline), Rodney (Cathy) and Cherise (Larry) Husulak and one
sister, Lena Antonishyn; 10 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and
numerous nieces and nephews. Prayers were held on Sunday, October 19,
2014 and the Funeral Service was held on Monday, October 20, 2014.
Both services were held from the Chapel of Christie’s Funeral Home in
Yorkton, SK with the Very Reverend Father Mel Slashinsky officiating.
The Cantor, Gerald Yaholnitsky was assisted by members of the church
choir. The Cross Bearer was Rochelle Berrns. Following a luncheon in
the Gunn Reception Room at Christie’s Funeral Home, the Interment
Service took place in St. John’s Ukrainian Orthodox Riverside Parish
Cemetery with Tyler Husulak, Derek Berrns, Kelsey Valuck, Shaylee Valuck,
Robert Cross and Deron Malinowsky serving as the casket bearers.
Friends so wishing may make donations in Frances’s name to St. John’s
Ukrainian Orthodox Riverside Parish Cemetery as tokens of remembrance.
Friends so wishing may forward their condolences to the family
by visiting www.christiesfuneralhome.com. Funeral arrangements were
entrusted to Christie’s Funeral Home & Crematorium, Yorkton,

WATRYCH - Born Martha Kathryn
Judith Irvine in Kelvington, SK on
February 28, 1944, Judy was the
oldest child of Forbes and Marie
Irvine (Gugins). Judy grew up and
attended school in Kelvington and
Gilbert Plains MB before moving to
Saltcoats in 1957 where she
attended Saltcoats Elementary and
High school meeting many lifelong
friends. Judy married John Harry
Watrych on January 26, 1962. The
newlywed couple moved to the
Outlook area for a short period
before settling in the Bredenbury
area where they started farming.
They were blessed with three
children, a daughter, Valerie and two
sons, Greg and Stephen. In 1971
the family moved to Calgary,
where Judy took on various jobs to
help with the family income. Judy
enjoyed camping with family and
friends and many weekends were
spent taking the trailer out to
Drumheller, Pine Lake, Elbow Valley
and the mountains west of Calgary.
In 1982, Judy, John and their youngest son, Stephen moved back to the
Saltcoats area to an acreage in the Perley district. This is where Judy
developed a deeper love of music and learned to play the
banjo and guitar. She was actively involved in the community
and enjoyed participating in the community socials at the
Perley school. Judy took a job at Lakeside Manor Care Home in Saltcoats
where she was inspired to go back to school and receive her Special
Care Aid certificate. Judy worked at the Saltcoats care-home until her
retirement in 2001. On June 27, 1999, the family lost their husband and
father, John. This transition was very difficult for Judy but she was always
grateful for the support she received from friends and family. In 2002,
Judy moved into the town of Saltcoats and loved her little house on Allen
Street. In 2003, Judy was diagnosed with breast cancer and spent the
next couple of years battling and finally beating the disease. Life
continued to be hard and Judy struggled with other health issues over the
years. The best times for Judy were with family and friends around the
fire pit or at the campsite, playing cards and get-togethers. Her favorite
times always seemed to start with “remember when…”. Judy was blessed
with three children, two sons-in-law and two grandsons, who she
treasured and adored and never missed an opportunity to tell others about.
The family is confident that her friends have all heard repeatedly how
wonderful they are. In early February of 2014, Judy was diagnosed with
ovarian cancer. She spent the next eight months battling bravely, however
Judy finally succumbed to her illness on October 12, 2014. Judy was
predeceased by her husband, John (1999), her father, Forbes (1978) and
her brothers, David (1946) and Doug (1969). Judy leaves to cherish her
memory, daughter, Valerie Spencer (Vaughan); sons, Greg (Nelson) and
Stephen; grandsons, Justin and Michael; mother, Marie Irvine; brothers,
Larry, Les (Emilie), Don (Nitasha) and sisters, Susan (Charles) Rowley,
Eileen (Larry) Gulak and their families; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law,
Eva (Chris), Sue (Jack), Alfred, Dennis (Val) and families, as well as
numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Funeral
Services were held on Saturday, October 18, 2014 from the Saltcoats
Community Hall, Saltcoats, SK with Reverend Walter Farquharson
officiating. The organist, Ruth Datema, led the congregation in the singing of
the hymns, “All Things Bright and Beautiful”, “Jesus, You Have Come to
the Lakeshore” and “Would You Bless our Homes and Families”. Special
Music was shared by Linda Datema and Connie Taylor, accompanied by
Teresa Laycock, who sang “One Day at a Time”. The Cremation Committal
followed in the Saltcoats Town Cemetery with Judy’s children, Valerie,
Gregory and Stephen serving as the urn bearers. Friends so wishing may
forward their condolences to the family by visiting www.christiesfuneralhome.

Calgary, AB, formerly of Yorkton and
the Kamsack district passed away
on September 26, 2014 at his
home. He was 62 years of age.
Frank Edward Yuzyk, the eldest
son of the late Albin and Mary
Yuzyk of Kamsack was born May
14, 1952 and was raised on the
family farm in the Verigin area. He
completed grades 1-12 in Kamsack.
After
graduating
from
high
school in 1970 Frank got a job in
Kamsack at the local hardware
store. A few years passed by and
Frank moved to Yorkton where he
worked at Morris and made some
very good friends whom he stayed
in touch with over the years. It was
then that he met Brenda Holowatuk

decided he wanted to try a career

From there Frank took a branch
manager position in Onoway, AB

love for vehicles and spent many hours working on cars. He was an
active member of the hot rod club in Calgary. Frank’s house in Tisdale, SK
was always brightly lit up at Christmas and the snow forts he built for
Krista were truly amazing. Frank will always be remembered as a kind and
caring person. He enjoyed socializing with his friends over cold beverages
and card games. Frank’s latest greatest passion was for his granddaughters. This was evident in the countless conversations they shared
over the phone and the joy in his eyes when he got to see them this past
summer. Frank was predeceased by his parents Albin and Mary Yuzyk.

son, brother and friend Darrell
Richard Rieder. Darrell passed
away peacefully in his home
(Southey, SK) at the age of 57 on
October 8, 2014. Darrell was born
in Yorkton, SK on November 20,
1956. In 1977, Darrell caught the
eye of Joyce (nee Peel) of Foam
Lake, SK and they were married in
1978. In 1979, they were blessed

Lisa. In 1981, they were blessed
again with the birth of their second
daughter Colleen. In 1978, he
started work with the Saskatchewan
Wheat Pool where he worked
until his retirement until 2007. Darrell
also farmed with his father until
2012. Darrell fully retired and sold
the farm shortly after the passing
of his father in 2012. Despite
holding two full-time jobs for over 30
years, Darrell always made time to
be involved with his daughters’
activities and completing his wife’s endless To Do lists. Darrell will forever
be remembered for his farmer’s love of the Weather Network, coffee row
at the local coffee shop, wise cracks and shenanigans after Thursday
night curling, Southey and Buylea Lions Club functions and local Southey
Marlin hockey games. Darrell’s recent hobbies alongside his wife included
travel to several countries around the world, cottage life at Collingwood
Lakeshore Estates near Strasbourg and snowbird life at their home in
Poinciana, FLA. His grandson Levi loved to play and tease his Grandpa
and Darrell loved to tease and spoil his grandson. A recent trip to
“Mickey’s House” with Grandpa will forever remain with his grandson. His
jovial spirit and wisecracks to young and old will forever be missed. Darrell
worked hard and played hard. His love for his family and friends will
forever be imprinted in the memories of those left behind. Darrell was

I heard her voice in the winds
tonight
Wondrously sweet and low
Drifting down from the
heavens
Beyond the sunsets glow.
And tonight on wings aerial
Borne over the fallen leaves
I’m hearing again her lifting
voice
From beyond the towering
trees
She’s singing a song for me
tonight
Wondrously sweet and low
Touching again the golden
chords
Of just a year ago.
We love you &
miss you like crazy mom.
Love your family

PLAN OF THE WEEK
PLAN NUMBER 1-3631
DRAMATIC ENTRY
HOME
Among the many
striking attributes of this
three-bedroom family
home is a dramatic entry,
a 13-foot-high porch
flanked by wooden pilasters set on river-rock
bases, that leads into an
open-plan great-room/
dining-room/kitchen with
a vaulted ceiling.
The great room features a gas fireplace set
at an angle into one corner so that it will also
warm the dining room
and kitchen area, making
this a popular spot for
family gatherings during
the cooler months. A half-
wall surrounds a handy
desk that is located near
the coat cupboard.
In the summer, the
sundeck beyond the great
room window – reached
via the dining room – will
provide the ideal spot for
al fresco meals. Part of
the sundeck is covered,
offering the possibility of
year-round grilling.
The kitchen is separated from the great
room by a four-seat eating bar and work island.
Set into the work island,
the kitchen sink’s placement will allow the cook
to participate in activities in the great room. A
capacious walk-in pantry
is located in one corner.
The L-shaped counter
configuration will save
steps during meal preparation.
The master suite,
with a wall of windows
overlooking the deck
and beyond to the back
garden, will be flooded
with natural light. A
roomy ensuite includes
double basins with generous counter space and
a separate shower stall,
as well as a soaker tub
located by a window
overlooking the side
garden. A roomy walkin closet completes the
suite’s amenities.
The second bedroom,
overlooking the back garden, is separated from
the third bedroom by a
three-piece bathroom.
The third bedroom features a partly vaulted
ceiling and an extra-wide
window sill.
To the right of the
foyer is an L-shaped
staircase that leads to
the unfinished basement
included in the plans. To
the left of the foyer is the
laundry room, which –
with access to the double
garage and a coat closet
– will double as a mud
room. Ceilings throughout are 9 feet high, except
where noted.
Exterior
finishes
include horizontal and
vertical siding, stone
accents, decorative bracing in the gables, mullioned windows and tall
wooden pilasters with
stone bases. Barn-style
garage doors lend an air
of country class to the
home, which measures
48 feet wide and 54 feet
deep, for a total of 1540
square feet.
Plans for design 1-3631 are available for $695
(set of 5), $790(set of 8)
and $866 for a super set
of 10. Also add $30.00 for
Priority charges within
B.C. or $55.00 outside of
B.C.
Please add 12%
H.S.T., 13% H.S.T. Or 5%
G.S.T (where applicable)
to both the plan price
and Priority charges.

Card of Thanks
The family of Norma Thompson
express their sincere gratitude for
the kindness, comfort and sympathy,
thoughtful gestures and support
given to them during their time
of loss. We were deeply touched
by the cards, beautiful floral
tributes, the delicious food and the
memorial donations made in
Norma’s honour. A special thank you
to the many caregivers in the
Saskatoon and Sunrise Health
Regions, including the Saskatoon
Cancer Center, and the staff at the
Brightwater and Bentley Residences
for their compassion and care
shown over the years. Norma will
be greatly missed by all who knew
her.
The family of the late Jim Bridgewater would like to thank everyone
for their overwhelming acts of
kindness and generosity. The
cards, phone calls, flowers, food
and donations to Health Centre in
Jim’s memory. Thank you to Rev.
Walter Farquharson from the United Church in Saltcoats for his kind
words. Also, thanks to the Nurses
and Doctors for the good care at
the Regional Health Centre.
-From the Bridgewater Family.
Card of Thanks
The family of the late Ken Printz

Private MRI services warranted
S a s k a t c h e w a n ’s
Premier Brad Wall
mused recently about a
health reform idea that
is good for both patients
and taxpayers.
In fact, it’s an idea that
more provinces should
pursue.
Specifically,
Wall
mused on Twitter about
the idea of allowing
private
clinics
in
Saskatchewan to sell
MRI scans to the public
just like Alberta currently allows. Thus, if you’re
a Saskatchewan resident
and you need a scan of,
say, your shoulder, you
could choose to go on the
government’s waiting list
and receive a scan at no
cost or choose to pay out
of pocket and receive a
scan sooner at a private
clinic.
No matter how you
cut it, giving patients
more choice just makes
sense. Consider it from a
patient’s perspective.
If
you’re
a
Saskatchewan patient
and decide to go on a
waiting list for an MRI,
there are likely going to
be several people ahead
of you. In fact, the Fraser
Institute reported Sask
MRI wait times were
eight weeks on average
in 2013. But if the government allows private
clinics in Saskatchewan
to offer the service, some
of those people on the
waiting list ahead of you
will undoubtedly decide
to pay out of pocket and
drop off the government’s
waiting list. Thus, you
could get bumped up and
receive the service faster.
Alternatively, if you
were thinking of leaving
the province to pay for
an MRI scan in Alberta
or the United States,
Premier Wall’s idea
would mean you could
receive the scan in the
comfort of your own province. Thus, it would be
cheaper for you as you
could probably avoid
hotel bills, airplane tickets and other incidentals
that come from leaving
the province for health
care.
From an economic
perspective, Wall’s idea
is long overdue. Every
Saskatchewan taxpayer
that currently leaves the
province and pays for
health care in other jurisdictions is actually taking money out of the Sask
economy. One can hardly
blame them though, if
you’ve got the money and
can receive quicker for
your pain, why wouldn’t
you?
The other benefit
from allowing private
MRIs is the fact that
Saskatchewan
could
attract patients and their
cash from other provinces such as Manitoba;
a province that doesn’t
allow private MRIs.
In fact, a Manitoba
taxpayer recently told
the Canadian Taxpayers
Federation about going
to the U.S. and paying for
an MRI in Minneapolis.
His reason for doing so:
he was in pain and the
wait list was too long
in Winnipeg. Suddenly,
Saskatchewan
would
become a convenient
location for many other
Manitobans.
Obviously critics won’t
like Premier Wall’s idea.
They’ll fire up the fearmongering machine and
suggest the sky will fall if
Wall’s idea comes to fruition. After all, Wall’s idea
takes some power away
from the hands of government unions, bureaucrats and ideological
dinosaurs, and gives it to
patients.
The
fact
is,
Saskatchewan has had
private companies performing CT scans and
knee surgery for several
years now and the sky
hasn’t fallen. Nor has the
sky fallen in the education system where parents can choose to send
their kids to public
schools or pay for private
schools.
Hopefully Premier
Wall proceeds with his
idea. It’ll be good for
patients suffering in pain
as well as taxpayers.

son, and for good reason. This management
practice is a cost-effective option that reduces
labour
requirements
and can keep livestock
out of the corrals until
just before calving season. Maximizing forage
yield while maintaining
forage quality is the
goal for most producers.
However, one area that
is commonly overlooked
is that of plant disease
and the effects that mycotoxins can have on grazing livestock.
Crop disease is largely
dependent on the weather conditions and for that
reason it is very hard to
manage. Cool and moist
conditions when cereal
crops were flowering has
resulted in an increase
of crop disease, particularly fusarium and ergot.
Mycotoxins can be quite
harmful to livestock, and
while ruminants are gen-
erally more tolerant to
mycotoxins than other
livestock species, they
are still at risk.
Fusarium will produce a several different toxins, including
vomitoxin, zearalenone,
and fumonisins. Each of
these toxins will cause
negative effects on beef
cattle if present in high
enough concentrations.
The effects of each compound differ slightly but
can be characterized
by a reduction in feed
intake, reduced growth
and performance, suppressed immunity, and
potential fertility issues
such as disrupted breeding cycles and abortion.
If any of these toxins
are at levels of 5 ppm
or higher, feeding management is necessary to
avoid possible toxicity.
It is important to note
that straw from fusarium
infected cereal crops will
also contain the associated mycotoxins and can
become an issue if cattle
are consuming it.
When fusarium is
present, it is more likely
that other mould metabolites may also be present
in Western Canadian cereal crops, for example
aflatoxin and ochratoxin.
These toxins can become
more concentrated in
stored feed, especially if
moisture levels are elevated. Cattle consuming
feed with aflatoxin may
develop a suppressed
immunity which could
cause vaccines to fail.
Moderate levels of ochratoxin can be broken
down in the rumen and
is of lesser concern for
healthy cattle. However,
it is a suspected carcinogen and can lead to liver
and kidney damage, as
well as abortions, if large
amounts are consumed.
The incidence of
ergot has been steadily increasing in recent
years, and this year is
no different. Most cereal crops and grass species are susceptible to
ergot and for this reason
both grain and forages
should be considered
for possible infection.
Very few ergot bodies
are needed to harm livestock as deaths related
to ergot poisoning have
been observed with as
little as 0.04% in the diet
by weight. Symptoms
include depressed feed
intake, reduced milk production, lack of blood
flow to extremities
resulting in the loss of
ears, tails, and hooves,
and eventually death.
If conditions remain
wet through the fall, forage set aside for fall grazing will be more likely
to become mouldy. This
is especially true for
crops lying in the field
destined for swath grazing, although standing
forage, hay and green
feed should not be overlooked. Producers should
have their feed tested
for mycotoxins if they
suspect mould may be
present. With the exception of ergot, contaminated feed can usually be
diluted and fed provided
a feed test is completed
and mycotoxins levels
are known, though feeding mouldy feedstuffs to
pregnant cattle is not recommended.

Wall wants COOL quashed
Premier Brad Wall
welcomed the World
Trade
Organization
(WTO)
compliance
panel ruling in favour
of Canada and urged
the United States to end
mandatory Country of
Origin Labelling (COOL).
“The latest WTO ruling once again confirms
that the U.S. mandatory
COOL rules unfairly
discriminate
against
Canadian cattle and
hog exports,” Wall said.
“COOL is a protectionist
measure that hurts producers and negatively
affects the entire supply
chain on both sides of the
border and it should be
scrapped.”
COOL adds substantial costs to the integrated North American meat
and livestock industry
while providing no meaningful benefit to consumers. COOL prevents U.S.
processors from co-mingling U.S. beef and pork
with meat from Canadian
cattle and hogs resulting
in the need to segregate
livestock. Segregation
adds higher costs for companies using livestock
born or raised outside of
the U.S. along with additional costs for producers. Consumers are also
impacted through higher
meat prices.
“The ruling released
today is a positive step
for Saskatchewan cattle
Trucking & Transport
Penn-Truss Mfg. Inc.
and hog producers,” Wall
said. “While the U.S. may
appeal this decision, we
strongly urge the U.S.
Congress to repeal COOL
for beef and pork or make
a legislative fix which
would remove the arbi-
trary and unjustifiable
discrimination and damages against Canadian
cattle and hogs that is in
the current legislation.”
Saskatchewan supports the federal government in pursuing retalia-
tory tariffs if necessary.
COOL
is
an
important issue for
Saskatchewan producers.
Saskatchewan’s
cattle herd is the second
largest in the country at
nearly 2.9 million head
and the province’s producers supply feedlots
and packers in western
Canada and the United
States. In addition,
Saskatchewan markets
around 2.1 million hogs
every year.
Parenting Tips from Regional KidsFirst
Paint brush optional
Children love to paint and create! Between the ages of three and four, most children can draw and
paint recognizable shapes. They start to use smaller brushes and pencils and improve their fine motor
skills. At this point, you can encourage your child to paint or draw specific things.
Get a variety of paints, watercolours and poster paints. Paint can most often be found in the craft
sections of your local dollar store. There are also many recipes for homemade paint. Don’t restrict
your child to painting with a brush, however. Suggest that they try using their hands, feet, sponges,
cotton swabs, feathers, sticks, string and anything else they can find that would make a fun tool.
Supply white paper, but don’t be restricted to paper either. There are plenty of other fun surfaces to
draw on like balloons, rocks and the inside and outside of boxes, leaves and even outside on the
sidewalk. Be creative! Talk to them as they paint and encourage them to think creatively about what
they are doing. Encourage your child to talk about what they have drawn. Have them put their name
on their painting. Then label the painting with the picture title, for example “Charlee’s Cat”.
