Commencing Term 1 2015
The Junior School Counsellor reports to the Head of Junior School. The responsibilities of the
Junior School Counsellor include:

Administrative
attending Junior School and ELC staff meetings as appropriate.
representing Ruyton at meetings of relevant professional associations.
maintaining and storing confidential counselling records.
preparing submissions for relevant grants and funding applications.
receiving and summarising Educational Consultants reports for individual students
(e.g. Psychology, Speech Pathology) for Educational Development Team and Classroom
Teachers.
Pastoral
counselling students who are experiencing emotional, personal, social, school or family
difficulties or difficulties with academic progress or organisation.
contacting parents when appropriate, e.g. recommendations for behavioural
management, improved school progress or at risk situation.
meeting with and providing support for girls new to Ruyton as required.
liaising regularly with the Head of Junior School, the Director of Early Learning Centre and
Teaching Staff.
carrying out in-class student observations.
referring parents and/or students to appropriate external agencies when specific/on-going
personal or relationship counselling is required.
being available to parents for consultation on parenting and educational management.
Communication
participating with teaching staff in the implementation of relevant pastoral programmes.
contributing to policy development related to student welfare issues.
writing articles and providing information for parents via the School newsletter as
required.
speaking to parents as required at Information Nights.
working with teaching staff to develop programmes to address student issues such as
resilience, bullying, coping strategies as required.
being a resource for staff and parents with regard to child/adolescent development,
Health Education and related matters.
providing information and resources to Teaching Staff, the Director of Early Learning and
Head of Junior School in relation to student welfare, well-being and management issues.

This is a part-time position (0.6). In line with student needs there may be times where the role
may reduce or expand as negotiated with the Head of Junior School and the Principal.
The successful applicant will need to work the part time hours over 4 days (Tuesday – Friday).
It is expected that the successful applicant will have a full registration as a Psychologist with
AHPRA and membership with the APS (preferred) or have current membership of the AASW.
Previous experience working in schools viewed favorably.
