Professor of Clinical Psychology, Eastern Michigan University
– Rhonda Byrne, LMSW, IMH-E® (III), Integrated Behavioral
Health Specialist, Newaygo County Community Mental Health
This training will address the ways in which mothers’ histories of
relational trauma impact the mother-infant relationship, beginning in
pregnancy through the postpartum period using both an empirically
supported and clinically relevant perspective. The first part of the
training will describe the prevalence of different types of relational
traumas experienced by pregnant and post-partum mothers using upto-date scientific literature, including the presenter’s own research
findings. Furthermore, the effects of relational trauma on mothers’
developing representations of their infant in utero will be examined,
along with postnatal outcomes such as caregiving behavior and infant
attachment quality. These findings will be framed within both
attachment and trauma-informed theories. Case examples from an
ongoing research study will be used to illustrate points and stimulate
discussion. The second part of the training will describe a unique
intervention. Together, the training sessions will help attendees gain a
greater depth of understanding about the effects of relational trauma on
mothers and their infants during the transition to parenthood and some
ways in which mental health and early childhood service providers may
intervene with families to optimize the early parent-child relationship.
