DALLAS LEUNG 8:40 – 10:00AM KEYNOTE Economic Outlook HELMUT PASTRICK Helmut will share his perspective on the economic outlook for the year ahead, and examine the macro factors influencing BC’s economy. It seems that no matter how much we read, something always seems to slip between the cracks. This presentation will analyze topical court cases and government pronouncements in an attempt to fill in those holes and provide you with insights to stay on top of the hot topics of the day. Budgeting ranks as one of the most stressful and hectic tasks for controllers yet it is one of the most important duties of a controller. As resources become more and more constrained in companies, the financial manager who is capable of coordinating the development of a solid budget is a step ahead of others. Budgeting effectively involves more than just financial acumen – it involves inspiring department managers to provide valuable insights and knowledge in a timely fashion. It also involves compiling information received from various sources in an effective manner. This session will explore some of the common pitfalls of traditional budgeting and best practices to make the process more efficient for controllers as well as the business managers they are supporting, while meeting the objectives of the budgeting process. 12:00 – 1:10PM LUNCH 8:40 – 10:00AM KEYNOTE TIM DUHOLKE Living Larger: How to Maximize Your Non-Work Time HEATHER GRAY-GRANT In the accounting and finance professions, long hours tend to be the reality. But we contribute to this imbalance by frequently making decisions that sacrifice our personal life for our work life. We do this because we don’t appreciate the real value of balance. We also waste an enormous amount of our “free” time on things that are not important to us. This program teaches participants an easy, repeatable method to determine their priorities, assess how they are doing and build a realistic and focused plan for improvement. Participants are taken through an analysis and planning process that results in a personal plan to maximize the value of their nonworking time. They will be amazed at how much more effective they can be in virtually all aspects of their life, and how much time they really do have to focus on life outside of work. What Leaders Know About Effective Communication SHARON EDWARDS Leaders know that sharing their vision is crucial to the success of their teams and organization. Leaders know that innovation and creativity are necessary ingredients for the execution of excellence. Leaders know that without effective communication skills it is impossible to share a vision that will create a strategy that can support a team to create a successful outcome. In this session you'll learn more about improving your skill set as a master communicator: the difference between efficient and effective communication; why multi-tasking kills communication; how to bridge generational communication differences; how to share your vision by creating effective key messages and how great communication fosters innovation. Stop wasting time and energy talking in circles - communicate like a leader instead. 2:50 – 3:10PM COFFEE BREAK 3:10 – 5:00PM CONCURRENT BREAKOUT SESSIONS Outlook – The Killer App in Microsoft Office MARION WILLIAMS Microsoft Outlook is the most utilized email application in the world today. However, Outlook is more than just an email client; it is also a full-featured personal information manager. You can use Outlook for managing and organizing contacts, calendars, tasks, and notes; keeping track of activities related to clients, customers, and projects; and scheduling appointments and organizing meetings. Learn how to better organize and manage communications, calendar, and contacts. Coverage contains how to better organize your inbox, maintain control over calendar appointments and meetings, and collaborate with others more effectively. Accounting and Financial Reporting Update Personal Effectiveness: Self Awareness & Balanced Thinking DIANE MCDONALD SHAWN IRELAND This session will provide an overview of the recent and upcoming developments in accounting standards. Brief summaries of developments that have impacted financial reporting over the last twelve months will be discussed. Successful people have one thing in common – they learn by doing and by applying their experience to day to day activities. Through understanding themselves, their values and motivators, and by continuously examining their taken-for-granted assumptions, they are able to adapt and improve their communication and management styles, their approach to decision-making and relationships. This seminar identifies the links between our self understanding, personal growth, communication and management styles, and critical thinking, both in our working and personal lives.
