A simple act of washing hands with soap can reduce the incidence of deadly diarrhoea and pneumonia that kill more than 3.5 million children under the age of five every year across the globe. This simple act which most of us ignore in our daily lives, can reduce the death toll by about 50 per cent in case of diarrhoea and by nearly 25 per cent in the case of respiratory infections. Hand washing with soap – particularly at critical moments, including after using the toilet and before handling food – is a key cost effective and life-saving intervention. Research in several developing countries illustrates that lack of soap is usually not the barrier – with the vast majority of even poor households having soap at home – rather, the problem is that soap is rarely used for hand washing. Under the slogan “Clean hands save lives”, State level voluntary organization named Center for Child and Women Development (CCWD) in collaboration with Save the Children organized the Hand wash Campaign in flood affected areas of Tigiria block of Cuttack district to aware the community & children to know the importance of hand wash. A debate competition among the children was organized and the six steps of hand wash was demonstrated on the occasion. The campaign was inaugurated by Chairman of Tigiria Block Bhagirathi Nanda. All of us have to ensure conservation of wildlife,” he said.
