Couple's bodies
found, witchcraft
killing suspected
KEONJHAR: BODIES of a couple suspected to have been killed for practising
black magic were found from a forest in
Joda area of Keonjhar district today,
police said.
The bodies of Mangal Munda (65)
and Sukumani Munda (60) were found
inside Kusirapa forest near Kolahundula
village, Sub-divisional Police Officer
(SDPO) Ajaya Pratap Swain said.
Preliminary investigation indicated
that the two could have been stoned and
caned to death, he said adding a team
was also inquiring into the incident.
As per the information provided by
Raya, son of the deceased, some residents of the village had threatened to kill
all members of their family as they suspected the couple were practising black
magic, police said.
The villagers had alleged that several unpleasant incidents had taken
place in the village because of black
magic practised by the deceased,
they said. The SDPO said investigation was in progress and efforts were
being made to nab the accused. PTI

Principal, teacher arrested
for beating student

POLICE arrested Principal Prabin
Kumar Sharma and teacher Samar
Tripathy of the Guru Nanak Public
School, Nayabazar for mercilessly
beating a school boy.
Sources said both the Principal and
the teacher beat Ayush Dalbehera (14)
mercilessly even after bleeding from his
ear on allegations that he was involved
in a mobile theft case on October 17
last. Despite repeatedly denying the
allegation, Ayush was beaten. Later, he
was hospitalised with help of Child
Line, Rourkela.
On October 18 with help of Child
Line, the victim’s father Mohini Mohan
Dalbehera lodged an FIR. After registering a case, the police arrested
Sharma and Tripathy U/s 341, 323 & 34
of IPC. Later, however, the duo was
released on bail from Police station
inducing criticism from Child Line
which alleged that the police gave
safe passage to the accused persons
and did not impose any sections under
Juvenile Justice Act, Right to Education
Act for such corporal punishment.

Sexual assault of minor girl: Residents stage protest Police detains Jagannath Temple
AFTER the incident of sexual assault of a minor girl
came to fore, the members
of various social organisations, women organisations
and residents staged a
demonstration in front of
Office of the Superintendent
of Police protesting increase
in crime rate in the city.
Notably, a minor girl,
who
had
gone
to
Jamadarpali area with a boy
to visit the dam site, was
sexually assaulted by miscreants. The auto rickshaw
driver in which she was
travelling had passed the
information to the miscreants. However, the incident
came to the fore after the
miscreants circulated the
MMS.

A Sri Jagannath Temple servitor has
been detained by the Singhadwar Police
for allegedly assaulting a tourist couple
on Monday night while having darshan
of the deities.
According to the complaint lodged
with the police, Srikanta Nandi and
Jyotica Nandi of Behela, West Bengal
had gone to the temple on the Monday.
At about 7 PM while they were returning from the sanctum sanctorum a
servitor dashed against Jyotica. When
protested, the servitor allegedly hurled
blows on her face and her husband,
who came to her rescue. The couple sustained grievous injuries on their faces.
Police apprehended the servitor identified as Madhav Pratihari (32) and are
investigating the incident. In the meantime, the pilgrim couple have left for
Behela and interestingly the police have
released the accused servitor.

Prasad while inaugurating
the Wildlife Awareness Day
Celebrations at the Civic
Centre here today.
“You have to generate
awareness in society about
the need to conserve all
wildlife for which degradation of forests and destruction
of their habitats must be
stopped. You owe this to yourself and the generations to follow,”
said
the
CEO.
Expressing anguish over the
fact that many animal species
have become extinct, Prasad
said that all of us now have the
responsibility of protecting
what is left and let all life forms
flourish. This is for the sake of
future generations. “Wildlife
conservation in India took off
with Project Tiger when the
total tiger population fell to a
very low count. Happily,
today, thanks to the conservation efforts, we have a sizeable
tiger population in the country.
As far as Odisha is concerned,
there is the Similipal Biosphere
Reserve which has 18 Wildlife
Sanctuaries and several habitats focusing on specific animals like Elephant Reserves,
Tiger Reserves, Sea Turtle
Rookeries, etc. But merely government intervention is not
enough. All of us have to
ensure
conservation
of
wildlife,” he said. CEO pointed out that RSP had been regu-
larly organizing Bio-diversity
Awareness
Programmes
including Zoo Education
Programmes at IG Park Zoo to
spread the message of conservation of flora and fauna. He
further exhorted all to pledge
to save wildlife and environment for the sake of Mother

Documentary on birds adjudged best in science programme

A musical science documentary
produced by All India Radio
(AIR),
Berhampur
was
adjudged as the best science
programme in national level
and to get Akashavani annual
award-2013.
The documentary titled
"Pakshi" (the bird) was chosen
as AIR has introduced the science category award to popularise science broadcast in the
country.
“We are trying to introduce
the evaluation, growth, migrating pattern of birds along with
some of the extinct species in
the documentary, which is presented through folk music,”
said Hrushikesh Panigrahi,
Assistant Programme Officer of
AIR, Berhampur.
Besides being the producer
of the document, Panigrahi has
also penned the musical programme.
The documentary shows the
chadheiya (the birdman), one of
the popular characters of the
famous folkdance Danda Nata,
narrating the story of the birds
in folk-music style.
The documentary also highlights the success story of conservation of the house sparrow
by
the
bird-lovers
at
Purunabandh, a remote village
near river Rushikulya mouth in
Ganjam district. The method of
house sparrow conservation
started by Rabindra Kumar
Sahu in the village was now
adopted by different agencies in
the State, sources said.
Kedar Panigrahi, a folk
singer has rendered his voice as
chadheiya, while the folk and
instrumental music to original
tune is provided by his associate M Madhab Patra and troupe.
