What you missed this week:
The speaker, Alex Hannant, gave a wide ranging and stimulating presentation on the work of
the Akina Foundation in the social enterprise field. One of Alex's definitions of social
enterprise is that it aims to combine doing well with doing good. He also highlighted the very
wide range of types of social entrepreneurship already in New Zealand. Some social
enterprises use their profits for social impact causes, others use the enterprise to build skills in
the community, and there are some that pursue very wide commercial/social impact
goals. The Foundation assists social enterprise in a number of ways including direct support,
seed funding, providing networking opportunities, brokering partnerships and creating
connections for social entrepreneurs. Many in the club are interested in social enterprise and
Alex Hannant’s presentation gave us ideas about ways in which to utilise Rotary’s capability in
this field.
Two new diplomats visited us.
Joy Kere, is the first female High Commissioner for the Solomon Islands and a Paul Harris
Fellow.
David Wu, is Elliott Chang’s replacement at the Taiwan Economic and Cultural Office in
Wellington.
The Sergeant, Graeme Hall, tried us out on New Zealand employment demographics, or
maybe unemployment demographics! There were some interesting surprises. I hadn’t
realised the distinction between being ‘unemployed’ and ‘jobless’. Possibly the distinction
denotes an attitude of mind?
The five-minute talk enabled Jacinda Ashley-Jones to introduce herself to the Club. Jacinda
is a member of Collective Impact and is helping Youssef Mourra with Club strategy. Jacinda
is a Wellingtonian and must be okay because one of her majors is the same as mine, Human
Geography. She has also majored in Human Resources and was awarded a Summer
Research Scholarship at Victoria University of Wellington. If you jog alongside Jacinda for a
while, ask her about her interests in sailing, skiing and trail running.
Social events:
· Collective Impact Social Evening is on 28th October, 6 - 7 pm at The Bureau (120 The
Terrace). Come along to support our younger members and have a glimpse of Rotary of the
future. If you’d like to go, please let Tony Hassed know.

· Melbourne Cup Day at the Museum Hotel is on 4 November, 4pm. Like Thirsty Third
Thursday, but with horses and the chance to win up large on the club sweepstake. Once the
Melbourne Cup Day comes, the silly season is underway, so you may as well give in and start
socialising now.

· Manfield Park Motor Races MG Classic Race Meeting 16 November, 9.30 – 4pm. Heather
Verry and her team have invited the Club to their hospitality suite for this day. The races
include Central Muscle Cars, Classic cars, BMWs and many more. Eat, drink and
relax. Heather will take us on a tour of the facilities at Manfeild. The cost is $50.00 per head.
Lychgate Funeral Home 18th November Vocational visit, 5.30 – 7pm. If going, please email
Elisa Mendzela to join in(please note that we have listed this email incorrectly previously). If
a Funeral Home feels a bit threatening, think of Noel Coward’s comment: ‘I read 'The Times'
obits and if my name is not in the obits, I proceed to enjoy the day.’
Don’t miss the lunch meeting on 3rd November (next Monday is Labour Day):
Lyn Brown & Pamela Kohnke will present the RACS/Rotary Project, 'Partnering for Global
Family Health'. Lyn and Pamela bring very interesting backgrounds having been involved as
nurses in Rotary projects related to skills connected with nursing surgical patients in Timor-
Leste.

· Remember the District Conference is on 5 - 7 December and sign up for it! Your
presence can add your uniqueness to this occasion. If you can’t make the Conference, how
about registering for the Forum? It will be very stimulating.
· Do you have room to store the new Jumbo Tennis Racquets? They don’t fit in Rebecca’s
garage and I don’t remember that requirement in her job description. If you have room, your
pristine tidiness would only have to be disturbed once a year for the actual Jumbo Tennis day.

· Rotaract Quiz Night 17 November at the Tap Haus at 6 pm. This is a great opportunity to
demonstrate your superior general knowledge and support our local Rotaract Club.

· We want Rotary to create a presence in the Wellington Round the Bays Race on 22
February. Lionel Nunns at Wellington North is keen to build up the numbers from Rotary in
this enjoyable event, so we have a brand that is ACTIVE! Walking or running, it’s all exercise.
If you are willing to be the club champion for our involvement in this event, just let me know. I
don’t think it would involve much work and would enable us to help out other smaller local
clubs.

· Club development workshop 6 November, 6 – 8 pm at Taita Central, or 10 – 12 pm,
Masterton. If you’d like to go, let me know.
· The Helen Hancox Corner for Confused Spellers.
-- A club member, who shall be nameless but owns a luxury lodge, has a new chef who plans
to include some glutton-free food in his menu! Now there’s a solution to the global obesity
crisis, but then who wants to stay in a luxury lodge and not be a glutton?
·-- Another member, who shall be nameless but happens to be the President’s sister, saw a
notice for a Christmas function in their building, inviting people to ‘come and woof down
dessert with us’.
Rotary out there:
Rotary International and the Global Food Banking Network: About one third of all food
produced is lost or wasted, while millions in the world are starving. Rotary International and
the Global Food Banking Network combine resources to distribute some of this food to people
who need it. Rotary input takes varying forms, an example is the Rotary Club of Hong Kong
which organises a bread run, that takes unsold bread and gives it to charities; while in El
Salvador, Rotarians provide leadership guidance to the National Food Banking
Network. Here in Wellington, Kaibosh Food
Rescue does an excellent job in this field.
