Science 4-Health -Exercise & Your Heart
At the October club meetings 4th, 5th, & 6th grade 4-H members will identify exercise benefits to the heart, compute heart
rate before and after exercise, and compare heart rate before and after exercise.
The Heart
Heart pumps blood to all parts of the body. The blood brings
oxygen to the muscles. The heart pumps blood through
blood vessels that go to all parts of your body. Look at the
inside of your wrists-most people can see blood vessels at
this place on their bodies. The system of blood vessels in
the body is similar to highways; smaller highways connect
us to bigger interstate highways. The largest arteries flow
into smaller arteries, then into smaller and smaller
capillaries. The capillaries then flow into small veins, which
flow into larger and larger veins and larger veins until they
reach the heart.
Science 4-Health Trivia

Gazette newsletter. If you email the correct answer to
us, along with your full name, school you attend and
your grade level, you will receive a prize at your next
club meeting. Remember, your answer must be

Your Pulse
What is your pulse?
Your pulse is your heart rate, or the number of times your
heart beats in one minute. Pulse rates vary from person
to person. Your pulse is lower when you are at rest and
increases when you exercise (more oxygen-rich blood is
needed by the body when you exercise). Knowing how to
take your pulse can help you evaluate your exercise
program.
How to take your pulse:
Place the tips of your index, second and third fingers on
the palm side of your other wrist below the base of the
thumb. Or, place the tips of your index and second fingers
on your lower neck on either side of your windpipe.
Press lightly with your fingers until you feel the blood
pulsing beneath your fingers. You may need to move your
fingers around slightly up or down until you feel the
pulsing.
Use a watch with a second hand, or look at a clock with a
second hand.
Compute Your Resting Pulse:
Count the beats you feel for 10 seconds. Multiply this
number by six to get your heart rate (pulse) per minute.
Count your pulse: _____ beats in 10 seconds x 6 = _____
beats/minute
What is a normal pulse?
Normal Heart Rates at Rest:
Children (ages 6 - 15) 70 – 100 beats per minute
Adults (age 18 and over) 60 – 100 beats per minute
What is target heart rate?
You gain the most benefits and lessen the risks when you
exercise in your target heart rate zone. Usually this is
when your exercise heart rate (pulse) is 60 to 80 percent
of your maximum heart rate. In some cases, your health
care provider may decrease your target heart rate zone to
begin with 50 percent.

Create a Path for a Healthier Family
Remember-physical activity is good for the heart because,
like other muscles, the heart muscle works better when it
gets exercise.
Have everyone in your family trace their footprint on a sheet
of drawing paper or construction paper. On the footprint,
write instructions for a simple activity, such as “Do ten
jumping jacks.” or “Do five curl-ups.”
Make a path by taping the footprints around your kitchen,
living room, drive-way outside, etc. Invite all your family
members to exercise their heart muscle and their other
muscles by following the path and performing the activities
written on the footprints. Send us pictures by posting to our
Facebook wall.
