Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a two-year, fixed term contract position at the
level of Junior Research Fellow, for appointment as soon as possible. The position will be situated in the
Computational Biology Group, which is in the Department of Clinical Laboratory Sciences and the Institute of
Infectious Disease & Molecular Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Cape Town. The Research Fellow
will work on an MRC Flagship project to study transmission of tuberculosis, and will include data integration and
mathematical modelling.
Requirements:






A PhD degree in Bioinformatics or Computational Biology
Minimum of 3 years postdoctoral research experience in the field of bioinformatics
Demonstrated research experience (publication record)
Good background in Bioinformatics, Mathematics or Statistics
Good communication skills
Leadership skills
Responsibilities:







Manage data from various partners as part of an MRC flagship project on TB transmission
Integrate data from different technologies and areas of biology (NGS, proteomics, immunology, etc.)
Publish a minimum of 2 papers per year during the tenure of the Fellowship
Co-supervise a minimum of 2 postgraduate students in the Computational Biology Group working on the
TB transmission and related projects
Develop proposals for submission to major funding agencies to support long-term research efforts
Aim to secure independent research funding, develop national and international research partnerships,
collaborations and network ties.
Encouraged, but not required, to gain experience in bioinformatics teaching.
The 2014 annual cost of employment, for this contract position will be in the range R298,000 – R330,000,
depending on experience.
