Don’t forget to set your clocks back one hour on Sunday, November 2, then start looking forward to the holidays! Seasons change and changes come into each one of our lives. Recently Sharyn Murphy retired as our Program Coordinator. I would like to personally thank Sharyn for the more than 10 years of dedication and service she provided. When I hired Sharyn, it was at the start of major changes in Medicare and State of Connecticut Social Service programs. I want to express our gratitude for all that Sharyn accomplished in those areas, as well as in programming. As we go forward, please welcome Dave (aka Harry) Harrington as the new Program Coordinator. Harry has provided much needed assistance in recent months, and brings experience and expertise with Medicare Parts A/B/C/D, Energy Assistance Programs, CHOICES counseling, as well as other areas. Rebecca Stone, also qualified in those areas continues to be available to provide information and assistance. We also have a new full time bus driver, Rosario Cosentino. Mr. Cosentino most recently worked at Elim Park, and is a welcome addition to the staff. There are many opportunities for you at Calendar House. As you read and enjoy Active Lifestyles, we hope you find something of interest. On Thursday, November 13 at 1pm Patricia Walden, NHA, Executive Vice President of Central Connecticut Senior Health Services, a component of Hartford HealthCare will be at Calendar House to provide information and updates on HOCC-BMH campus. On Thursday, November 20 following the 1pm Membership Meeting, Denis Rioux of BL Company, the architectural firm conducting the Needs Assessment Study for Calendar House will join us to provide an overview of the project and the opportunity for you to voice your ideas, concerns and things you’d like to see developed in our senior center. If requesting to be seated at a specific table, please decide the designated person, before purchasing tickets, be sure to specify that name as the group you wish to be seated with. CREATE YOUR OWN JEWELRY CLASS Friday 21 November 1:00 PM Imagine being able to create and design your own jewelry. Come join this “Hands-On” class on November 21, 1:30-4:30 pm with The Bead Lady, Jan Hasenjager, to learn basic jewelry making techniques. You’ll make a fabulous necklace and earrings for the holidays from crystal, metal, glass and stone beads and findings. GOOD YARN! “Granny Squares” a group of women gather once a week at Calendar House to knit and crochet lap blankets, hats, scarves and mittens that are donated to worthy causes. DIAL-A-RIDE BUS DIAL-A-RIDE BUS provides transportation at no charge for Southington residents aged 55 & over and for people with disabilities. Transportation is available to & from doctor & dental appointments. On Mondays, Tuesdays & Thursdays rides are available to various shopping locations. Mon-Fri rides are provided to & from Calendar House for lunch, activities, programs & appointments. ADVANCE notice is required three days (72 hours) is requested when possible. We ask that medical appointments be made between 9am-2:30pm for in town and between 10am-1pm for out of town. Please call 860-621-3014. SPECIAL NEEDS REGISTRY The Town of Southington in conjunction with the Commission on DisAbilities has established a Special Needs Registry at the Southington Police Department Dispatch Center to assist residents with special needs in the event of emergency or evacuation. This includes but is not limited to events such as floods, fire, severe winter storms, etc. Some examples of needs are residents with wheelchair or mobility issues and/or residents that require oxygen on a daily basis. Detailed info is contained on the registration form, available at http://www.southingtonpolice.org/911specialneedsform.pdf. Mail completed form to Southington Commission on DisAbilities, PO Box 439, Marion CT 06444 or deliver to SPD, 69 Lazy Lane, Southington. CHRISTMAS TREE SHOP TRIP Tuesday, November 18, 9:30 AM A shopping trip to the Christmas Tree Shop in Manchester has been scheduled for Thursday, November 18, 2014, departing from the Calendar House at 9:30 AM. We are taking applications for individuals who heat their homes with deliverable fuels (oil, propane, wood chips, pellets, coal, etc.) by appointment ONLY. Call your vendor before applying to make sure the vendor is still participating. Applications for CL&P/Yankee Gas customers will be scheduled for after November 30. Please specify which type of gas used, (Propane or Yankee Gas) when calling to make your appointment. 2014/15 INCOME GUIDELINES HAVE NOT BEEN SET YET; BUT LAST YEARS WERE: $32,190.08* single individual; $42,094.72* married couple *subject to change by State of CT. Documents must show all income, incl. year-to-date interest and assets AND MUST BE the most recent available prior to your application date. Our dedicated Income Tax Counselors make this possible and receive training and certification through the AARP TCE program. But the program is growing and we need YOU! MEDICARE OPEN ENROLLMENT FOR MEDICARE PART D RX Medicare features a six-week period annually known as Open Enrollment Period (OEP) when you can make changes to your plan, leave your plan entirely in favor of one you believe is better, or if satisfied with your current coverage, leave it exactly as it is. This period will begin October 15, ending December 7. All changes made will become effective January 1, 2015. Calendar House Counselors are available to assist first time or returning individuals in making informed choices re. their prescription drug/healthcare plan for the coming year.
