BASIC USE
Hardibackerª 1/2" Cement Board with
Moldblock« Protection
Hardibacker 1/2" Cement Board with G2 (second generation) technology allows for
smooth transitions with 1/2" thick drywall, and
can be finished like drywall; it may be painted,
textured, wallpapered or tiled. Hardibacker
board is ideal for installation in shower and
tub areas where a tough moisture and mold
resistant panel is required. It is also suitable for
use as a moisture resistant backerboard
behind fiber reinforced plastic (FRP) panel
applications such as commercial bathrooms,
food preparation, deli and seafood areas.
Hardibackerª 1/4" Cement Board with
Moldblock Protection
Hardibacker 1/4" Cement Board is intended
for use under ceramic tile for interior floor and
countertop applications in wet or dry areas,
including shower and bath areas (except
shower floors), in residential and commercial
buildings of all types. It helps protect wood
subfloors and supports and maintains tile
adhesion. Hardibacker 1/4" is available with
an EZ Gridª recessed fastener pattern in a 3' ×
5' size. The convenient grid surface with
marked fastener locations simplifies cutting
and fastener placement.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS
Hardibacker’s proprietary cement formulation
and Moldblock« Protection provide a moisture and mold resistant wallboard and tile
backer substrate that stands tough over time,
reducing the need for product replacement.
James Hardie has demonstrated a commitment to reducing energy consumption, while
improving process efficiencies and waste
management. It avoids the use of environmentally damaging materials and uses
renewable resources that are abundant in
the manufacture of Hardibacker cement
board. Hardibacker board does not contain
any glass fibers, gypsum, asbestos or
formaldehyde. The company also focuses on
water conservation and attempts to recycle
water and waste product as much as possible
during the manufacturing process.

scores on the ASTM G21 test for mold resistance (0) and on the ASTM D3273 test against

FIRE PERFORMANCE
Hardibacker products are recognized as noncombustible when tested in accordance with
ASTM E136. When tested in accordance with
ASTM E84, Hardibacker products perform as
follows:

Hardibacker Cement Board can be used as a
component in 1 hour fire-rated wall
construction when installed in compliance with
National Evaluation Service Report NER-405.
5. Installation
PREPARATORY WORK
Handle and store product according to
James Hardie Building Products, Inc.,
recommendations.
EZ Gridª board recessed fastener pattern
makes installation easier.
Prior to Start of Installation
Ensure that subfloor is structurally sound and
that other substrate conditions are in
compliance with applicable building code
structural design requirements and manufacturer’s installation instructions. For floor installations, remove existing floor coverings.
Hardibacker sheets can be installed over
sound Vinyl Composition Tile (VCT); however,
do not install over cushioned vinyl. Floor substrate surface must be sound, clean, flat and
continuous.
Keep Hardibacker sheet edges 1/8" (3.2 mm)
back from walls and cabinet bases.
Manufacturer recommends leaving 1/8" (3.2
mm) gap between sheet edges.
METHODS
Complete installation recommendations are
available from the manufacturer.
Cutting
Cut sheets to the required size and shape by
using the score-and-snap method using a
carbide-tipped scoring knife or utility knife.
The use of shears (manual, electric or pneumatic) is also acceptable. For cutouts and
small holes, score around the perimeter and
break out from the face side with a hammer.
Countertops
For countertops, use minimum 1/2" exterior
grade plywood or equivalent, positioned
across the plywood cabinet. Space between
plywood supports is not to exceed 16" (406
mm) oc. Apply a supporting bed of dry-set

mortar or modified thinset to plywood with a
1/4" square-notched trowel. Mastic can also
be used with a 5/32" V-notched trowel. Using
the fastener pattern as a guide, fasten
Hardibacker board with minimum 3/4" (19.1
mm) corrosion resistant (galvanized or stainless steel) roofing nails, 3/4" (19.1 mm) long
ribbed counter sinking corrosion resistant
screws, or 18 gauge corrosion resistant polymer coated 3/4" (19.1 mm) staples with a 1/4"
(6.4 mm) crown. If using 1/2" Hardibacker
board, use minimum 1 1/4" (32 mm) long corrosion resistant roofing nails or ribbed counter
sinking screws.
Locate fasteners a minimum of 3/8" (9.5
mm) and a maximum of 3/4" (19.1 mm) in from
sheet edges, and a minimum of 2" (51 mm) in
from sheet corners. Fasteners should be
spaced 8" (203 mm) oc at sheet perimeter
and in the field. Prior to setting tile, fill all joints
with the same mortar being used to set tiles.
Embed 2" (51 mm) wide high-strength alkali
resistant glass fiber tape in mortar and level.
Floors
Use minimum 5/8" exterior grade group 2 or 3
species plywood or 23/32" exterior grade OSB.
If joist spacing exceeds 16" (406 mm) oc, consult building codes for subfloor requirements.
The floor must be engineered not to exceed
the L/360 deflection criteria (L/720 for natural
stone), including live and dead design loads
for the specific joist spacing used.
Provide movement joints where existing
structural joints (building control joints) occur
and where changes in direction occur, such
as in “L” shaped rooms. For large tiled areas,
provide movement joints in accordance with
ANSI A108, Section AN-3.7.
Apply minimum 3/32" (2.4 mm) thick supporting bed of mortar or modified thinset to subfloor. Install board in a staggered brick pattern
at right angles to the subfloor and fasten it
before the setting material films over. The
boards should be fastened with 1 1/4" (32 mm)
long corrosion resistant (galvanized or stainless
steel) roofing nails or minimum 1" (25.4 mm) long
No. 8 by 0.323" (8.2 mm) HD self-drilling corrosion
resistant ribbed waferhead screws. If compliance with ANSI A108.11 is not required, minimum
1" (25.4 mm) long No. 8 by 0.323" (8.2 mm) HD
self-drilling corrosion resistant ribbed buglehead
screws may be used for floors. Locate fasteners
a maximum of 8" (203 mm) oc around the
perimeter and in the field. Keep fasteners a
minimum of 3/8" (9.5 mm) and a maximum of
3/4" (19.1 mm) from sheet edges and 2" (51 mm)

in from sheet corners.
Prior to tiling, fill all joints with the same mortar used to set the tiles. Reinforce the joints by
embedding 2" (51 mm) wide, high-strength,
alkali resistant glass fiber tape in the mortar;
allow to dry thoroughly. In accordance with
ANSI A108, attach floor tiles, complying with
ANSI A137.1, with Type 1 mastic adhesives,
acrylic, or latex-modified thinset mortars,
complying with ANSI A118.4.
Vinyl and Other Resilient Flooring
Hardibacker board may be installed over
Vinyl Composition Tile (VCT) and other resilient
flooring. For best results, remove existing flooring, especially if it is in poor condition. If
installing Hardibacker board over existing
floor, ensure the floor is flat and floor covering
is thoroughly adhered to the subfloor.
Replace any loose, warped, uneven, or damaged sections of floor. Make sure subfloor is
dry, level, and fastened correctly.
Install Hardibacker sheets smooth side up
and perpendicular to subfloor panels.
Stagger all sheet joints; do not align
Hardibacker board joints with subfloor joints.
Never allow all 4 corners of sheets to meet at
one point. Lightly butt the sheet joints - do not
leave a gap or force edges together. Join
factory-cut edges together in the body of the
floor. Keep sheet edges 1/8" (3.2 mm) back
from walls and cabinet bases.
Fasten one sheet at a time; sheets must be
flush with floor during installation. Fasten with
minimum 7/8" (22.2 mm) long galvanized or
polymer-coated No. 18 gauge (0.0475" (1.2
mm)) chisel point staples with 1/4" (6.4 mm)
crown or minimum 7/8" (22.2 mm) long galvanized ring shanked underlayment flooring
nails, located a maximum of 3" (76 mm) oc
around the perimeter and 6" (152 mm) oc in a
random/staggered pattern in the field.
Fasteners should be located at least 3/8" (9.5
mm) from sheet edges and 2" (51 mm) minimum from sheet corners.
Fasteners should be of sufficient length to
penetrate at least 1" (25.4 mm) sound subflooring or framing. Begin the fastening pattern in a corner of the sheet, and then fasten
the 2 adjacent edges. Return to the corner
and fasten in a diagonal pattern from that
corner until the board is completely fastened.
Place fasteners in a random staggered pattern across the Hardibacker board.
When finishing the surface and joints, lightly
hand-sand seams to achieve a smooth transition between sheets, if necessary. Avoid over-
sanding. Thoroughly clean Hardibacker board
surface to remove all debris prior to patching.
Using a wide flat trowel, apply a skim coat of
patch to all seams, sanded areas, hammer
indentations, holes, gaps, gouges, chips and
voids, to achieve a smooth surface. Avoid
building a ridge over the seams by feathering
the patch out several inches on both sides of
the seams. Obtaining a perfectly smooth surface may require more than one coat of
patch. After the patch has thoroughly dried,
lightly sand or scrape off any surface imperfections caused by the patch to achieve a
smooth surface. Wait until patch is thoroughly
dried before installing the floor covering.
Walls
Install Hardibacker 1/2" board with the long
dimension either vertical or horizontal to nominal
2 x 4 wood framing members or minimum No. 20
gauge (0.0329" (0.84 mm)) metal framing members. To comply with ANSI A108.11, framing members shall be spaced a maximum of 16" (406
mm) oc.
To fasten to wood or metal framing members, use minimum 1 1/4" (32 mm) long by 3/8"
(9.5 mm) corrosion resistant (galvanized or
stainless steel) roofing nails or 1 1/4" (32 mm)
long by 3/8" (9.5 mm) No. 8 HD self-drilling, corrosion resistant, ribbed waferhead screws that
are spaced a maximum of 8" (203 mm) oc at
all supports.
Locate fasteners at least 3/8" (9.5 mm) from
board edges and 2" (51 mm) from board corners.
Place boards with a minimum 1/4" (6.4 mm)
clearance from floor surfaces and other horizontal tile termination locations, such as above
tub edges. Ensure this gap is free of adhesive
and grout. Fill gap with a flexible sealant.
For large tile areas, provide movement joints
in accordance with ANSI A108, Section AN-3.7.
Tiling
Attach tiles complying with ANSI A137.1 to the
underlayment with flexible Type 1 mastic
adhesives complying with ANSI A136.1, or
acrylic or latex modified thinset mortars
complying with ANSI A118.4, in accordance
with ANSI A108. Use the same adhesives to fill
and level sheet joints.
Texturing
Texture can be applied to Hardibacker board
in the same way as drywall.

Painting or Wallpapering
Apply a drywall primer suitable for high moisture areas as recommended by paint manufacturer. Paint Hardibacker board in the same
manner as drywall.
If wallpapering, prime surface of
Hardibacker board with a primer suitable for
high moisture areas as recommended by
wallpaper manufacturer.
Steam Room Application
Hardibacker board is recognized for use in residential steam rooms when installed over conventional framing and in accordance with
Hardibacker printed installation instructions,
TCNA guidelines (Tile Council of North America
Handbook, www.tileusa.com), and local building
codes. Questions and concerns regarding
design and construction should be directed to a
knowledgeable professional.
