Paradise for mountain bikers and leisure cyclists at Lake Achensee
Nestled against the backdrop of the Karwendel and Rofan Mountains, the region around the largest
lake in Tyrol provides bikers with a variety of easy cycle routes and challenging mountain bike trails.
The Achensee region is one of the most popular cycling and biking destinations in Tyrol, with more than
250 km of impeccably signposted and approved cycle and mountain bike routes. The fascinating allure of
the lake and the mountains ensure that every bike ride is a special experience, be it a leisurely ride along
the shores of the lake or a trip along the peaks high above the water.
Cycling in the valley...
There are countless cycle tours available for anyone wanting to enjoy the scenery in a gentle fashion
without increasing their pulse rate. The more gentle cycle paths take riders along the shores of the lake,
into one of the romantic side valleys or to the famous Alpine lodges (Pletzachalm and Gernalm or
Falzturnalm and Gramaialm), which can easily be reached from the towns.
...or high up in the mountains
Sportsmen and women can get their pulses racing on the demanding and action-packed mountain bike
routes that cover all difficulty levels and start from all 5 towns in the region. The well-signposted and
officially approved routes are mostly on forest tracks and agricultural roads. Bikers need stamina and a
good level of fitness to cycle to high altitudes.
Bikers need stamina and a good level of fitness to cycle to high altitudes. The Karwendel and Rofan
mountains provide a suitable starting point for the Karwendeltour, which insiders consider to be one of
the best routes in the Alps, and a true mountain biking highlight: At 306 km in length, 6,869 metres
above sea level, and covering 6,766 metres in altitude, the circular Karwendel route is justifiably known as
the “king of all tours”, as it poses a real challenge for biking enthusiasts. The breathtaking natural scenery
of the Karwendel Alpine Park more than makes up for any effort expended. At 730 km², it is the largest
nature reserve in Tyrol. If the Bavarian section is included, the total area is 920 km², which makes the park
the largest continuous nature reserve in the Northern Limestone Alps. In addition to the Karwendel tour,
there are countless other routes and excellent refreshment stops for excursions into this unique landscape.

Along the shores of Lake Achensee by E-bike
The e-bike is an environmentally-friendly and energy-saving method for exploring the Achensee region.
Electric bicycles are available at 20 rental stations, providing the perfect way to explore the region at an
enjoyable leisurely pace. In addition to the rental stations there are also 10 battery-charging stations.
Once charged, the e-bike's battery will last 40 to 80 kilometres, or approximately 5 to 6 hours, perfect for
long exploratory tours of the region. You can also take the e-bike on a tour into a neighbouring region,
for example the Zillertal or Alpbach valleys. These areas have the same infrastructure, which means you
can also swap batteries there.
The Via Bavarica Tyrolensis bike trail – cycling enjoyment in Tyrol and Upper Bavaria
Since 2004, ambitious "bikers" have been able to go on exploratory tours through Tyrol and right into
Bavaria. The Via Bavarica Tyrolensis bike trail is 225 km in length and offers cycling enjoyment from the
Inntal Valley through the Achensee region and right through to Munich in Bavaria. Travel kilometre after
kilometre through the beautiful mountain scenery and lake landscape of Tyrol and Upper Bavaria, and
absorb the multitude of impressions and experiences that greet you.

Things get even better next year: The münchen-venezia is coming! As of 2015, a new long-distance bike
path will bridge the gap in Alpine traverses of the Eastern Alps. Awaiting avid cyclists is the better part of
500 km in distance and 3,000 m in gains, along with all kinds of spectacular landscapes extending from
the Alpine foothills of Bavaria, past lake Achensee, and through the Dolomites as far as the famous “city of
lagoons”, Venice. Whether by bike from start to finish, or with the aid of trains or buses in parts, the
choices are all yours based on your personal preferences and stamina.
Achensee Cycle map and professional tips
A well structured cycle map is available from all tourist information offices, and it provides insights into
the perfect network of paths through the Achensee region. The map also shows the most picturesque
recommended routes, which are divided up according to length and difficulty level. The well-equipped
local sports shops are perfect for anyone interested in having a professional guided tour, anyone wanting
to rent a high-quality bike, or simply just for getting a few tips from a pro.
