This Thanksgiving . . .
Trim the turkey-and your electric bill
T
he rich scents of roasting turkey,
cinnamon-laced apple pie and tangy
cranberries can mean only one thing:
The oven is on, the blender is whirring,
and the dishwasher is working
overtime to keep up with Thanksgiving
preparations.
As you trim your turkey this
Thanksgiving, trim your holiday electric
bill, too. Following are a few tips.
There's no need to preheat the oven
before sliding in a turkey or ham that
will cook for hours-- even if the recipe
calls for it.
Turn your electric oven and stove
top elements off near the end of the
cooking time. Their residual heat will
finish cooking your meal.
If you use glass or ceramic bakeware,
you can turn your oven temperature
down 25 degrees, and the food will cook
just as quickly.
Choose pots and pans that are the same
size as the stove’s burner for efficient
stove top cooking. Pans that are too
small allow heat to escape from the
uncovered part of the coil.
Consider cooking your turkey outdoors
on the grill for an unexpected autumn
681007002
treat.
Instead of opening the oven door to
check on your juicy bird's progress, turn
on the oven light and peek through the
glass in the door. Every time you open
the door, heat pours out and makes the
oven work harder.
Remove all of the refrigerated items
you’ll need for a recipe at once so you
can open the refrigerator door less
often.
Make room next to the turkey for the
pies and the casseroles so they'll bake at
the same time and save energy.
Fully load your dishwasher before
running it. Set its energy-saving
features and use a cold-water rinse.

Daylight Saving Time
The end of Daylight Saving Time this
year comes Sunday, November 2. At
exactly 2 a.m., local time, clocks should
be turned back one hour to 1 a.m. The
change will result in an additional hour
of light in the morning, but an earlier
sunset. The change is often called “fall
back.”
460400300
Of course, most mobile devices, tablets,
cable boxes and smartphones will
update the time change automatically.
However, traditional watches, clocks
and other non-Internet enabled devices
(stoves, microwaves) will require an
old-fashioned manual change.
After the Nov. 2 time change, you will
not need to worry about changing the
clocks again until the beginning of
Daylight Saving Time 2015, which falls
on March 8. Those feeling stressed
about the time change can take
comfort in the extra hour of sleep they
will be getting after turning back the
clocks.

Energy Efficiency Tip of the Month
To save energy this month, try lowering your water heating costs. Water heating accounts for 14 to 25
percent of the energy you consume. Turn the water heater’s temperature to the warm setting, which is
around 120 degrees Fahrenheit.
