The Lady Patriots, however, did not. B-P
scored the match’s first six points and nine of
its first 10; then, the Lady Patriots ended the
first set with a 9-1 run.
“But I’ve got to give Stillwater credit,” said
Lady Patriots head coach Mike Calvello.
“They got to everything we started hitting in
that second set.”
After dominating the first set, the Lady
Patriots found themselves tied at 11 with
Stillwater well into the second game.
“When we came out in the second set, we
were way too relaxed,” said B-P senior
Keyana Fariello. “We had to find our groove
again.”
Quickly, the Lady Patriots did just that.
After securing possession of the ball after a
point had B-P up 12-11, juniors Zoe
Simonson and Megan Ryder each collected a
kill; then, senior Chelsea LeBlanc had a stuff
block at the net and a kill on the next play.
Quickly, the Lady Patriots had moved their
lead out to five points and B-P was never seriously challenged again in the match. The

Lady Patriots finished off the second set and
then raced out to an 18-5 lead to start the third
set.
“In set three, they just kind of got defeated,”
Collier said of her squad. “[B-P] put them in
a position where they didn’t feel like it was
attainable anymore.”
While the second set saw the teams play relatively even, the Lady Patriots were dominant
in the first and third sets — especially defensively. Stillwater did not hold serve at any
point in either the first or third sets, as the
Lady Patriots’ serve-receive was in peak form.
“During practice, we focus on our servereceive a lot,” said Smith. “Passes to target
mean a lot to us.”
Calvello said that was particularly important
Thursday, as he wanted the Lady Patriots to
get the ball cleanly to Smith, the team’s setter,
so that the junior could find ways for the B-P
hitters to avoid going head-to-head at the net
with Stillwater junior Mattie Drinkwater, the
Lady Warriors’ skilled middle hitter.
“We had to pass to target and I thought we
did that pretty well,” he said.
In all, Smith registered 28 assists for B-P,
while Simonson had 10 kills, Ryder had eight
kills, and LeBlanc had seven kills and five
solo blocks.
“Chelsea did a great job at the net tonight,
hitting and blocking,” said Calvello. “She did
a real good job.”
Senior Keyana Fariello collected 12 digs to
lead the B-P defense, while sophomore
Jordan Marshall had a team-high 12 service
points and six kills.
Now, the Lady Patriots get the chance to
atone for last year’s championship loss.
Calvello said the club planned to use today’s
practice to make sure it is firing on all cylinders when Saturday comes after a strong
effort Thursday.
“We’re going to have to play a little bit better,” Calvello said.

The Lady Braves received eight

Gianna Cruz, while senior Hailey

match in a row at the net.
“That was a big step for her,”
Mancini said.
R-C-S head coach Ron Racey,
whose team topped F-F during
the regular season, said he was
glad his team could escape
Thursday with a victory against a
program that has his utmost
respect.
“I enjoy coaching against coach
Mancini; she’s a quality person
and honest as the day is long,”
said Racey. “She always has her
team prepared. … And, any
Fonda athlete, you know they’re
driven and will play until the referees tell them to stop, and that’s
why I love playing them.”

“We have a really well-rounded
team — great passers, great hitters, and Anne (Sinicropi) is a
great setter,” said Nethaway.
“Now, we’re getting into our
roles, and I think the girls (coming up from JV) will help com-
plete that.”

girls volleyball team continued
its magical 2014 season
Thursday in the Section II
Class D semifinals, as the
Lady Eagles advanced past
Fort Edward with a 3-0 victory.
Galway (17-0) topped a previously unbeaten squad from
Fort Edward with relative
ease, as the Lady Eagles
won with scores of 25-16, 2519 and 25-15.
Emily Orminski had 28
assists to help guide the
Galway offense, while Emily
Zawisa had 10 kills and
Brittany Orminski had nine.
Rachel Jones added six
kills and a pair of blocks for
Galway, while Rachel
Sherman collected six kills
and four aces.
Galway, the No. 2 seed in
the tournament, will play
Saturday against undefeated
Waterford-Halfmoon at Burnt

Two days after posting a
rousing five-set win in the quarterfinals, the Lady Panthers ran

for Mayfield, while Kaylee
Bumpus had seven kills and
Bri Eagan had seven digs.
Mayfield finished the season with a 14-5 record.
