PAUL BURCH EMPLOYEE EXCELLENCE AWARD
THIRD QUARTER WINNERS
Barbara Henderson, Clubhouse Housekeeper
If you think about it, housekeeping at the Clubhouse is kind of like Disney’s. It is always immaculate, but quite often, you never see the work being done. Barbara Henderson and her teammate,
Nancy Martinez, do a tremendous job keeping the first and second floors of the Clubhouse
clean. They are responsible for the cleaning of the entrance and foyer, Ladies and Men’s Locker
Rooms, all of the restrooms, the Lakeview Room, Berkshire Grille, River Room, Grand Ballroom
and administrative offices. That is a lot of vacuuming, dusting, scrubbing and polishing.
Barbara has been with the housekeeping department of the Clubhouse for almost two years.
Often times, she is in at 6 am to get a head start, especially if there has been a private function
the night before. She even reviews the banquet log so that she knows what to expect ~ that is
being ever so conscientious and planning ahead. There is so much activity and many functions,
she really wants to make sure the facility is in immaculate condition before Members and Guests
start arriving.
AJ, Peter, Merry, and Kevin think very highly of Barbara. They know that she will take care of
whatever needs to be done without having to ask her. She has even helped out at the Fitness
Center when needed. Originally from Rocky Point, Barbara and her husband, Scott, live in Wallace. They both love going to Surf City to fish when they have time off and even vacation there.
“She often finds ways to do her job more efficiently and is always willing to work extra shifts
whenever needed. She makes sure the Clubhouse is in top notch shape before opening for
service!” -- AJ Sherrill
“She is always smiling and working to get the job done. She is a joy to be around and more
than willing to help in other areas like the Fitness Center when needed. Thank you for your hard
work!” -- Sabrina Lewis
Melissa Williams, Mad Boar Restaurant Bartender
Barbara Henderson
There are many reasons why Melissa was awarded the Paul Burch Award for this quarter. She has
been nominated many times by her co-workers and she is the perfect example of someone ever
so deserving to be recognized. Bonnie and Lauren, Front of the House Managers, think Melissa
is the best. They can always depend on her and they love her attitude.
Melissa has a nickname and it is so fitting for her. Once you meet her, you will know why. She
has this huge big smile. Everyone, from co-workers and customers, refers to her as Smiley!
Melissa started over 4 years ago at the Mad Boar Restaurant as a hostess and then transitioned
to a server position. She eventually trained to be a Lead Bartender. Bartending is not an easy
job as there are constantly new cocktails coming out that are really complicated and have many
ingredients. But Melissa says that she has memorized many of them.
As there are only three bartenders, Melissa works 5 days/evenings per week. Not only do they
serve those in the pub, but they have to fill orders from the dining room as well. Melissa really
likes serving the bar patrons because she enjoys talking to people, sharing and listening to their
stories or just talking about their day.
Melissa Williams
Often times, Members think Melissa works at the Clubhouse and the Mad Boar Restaurant.
But she does not. She has a twin sister, Marissa, who works as a Banquet Bartender at the
Clubhouse. Marissa, like Melissa, has a huge smile and they share so many other qualities.
Melissa was born and still lives in Wallace. She and Marissa are very close and they enjoy
hanging out together and shopping. Melissa says that she plans on staying at the Mad Boar
because she really likes her job.
“She is always willing to help out and is a hard worker. She has a great attitude and work ethic!”
-- Lauren Smith
“She knows her responsibilities and does her job without fail, happily and consistently. She is an
exceptionally loyal and hard worker!” -- Bonnie LaCharite

Message From The General Manager
Living in the United States of America is a blessing! While we struggle with challenges that are real and important to
us, many around the world are dealing with greater challenges. Such challenges as those presented by the new radical
extremist group ISIS or the civil unrest in Syria. Back in America, we rest assured knowing we have many brave men and
women “guarding the fence” and protecting the freedoms we enjoy. All too often, the physical and emotional price they
pay, while serving our country, is enormous. Giving back to those that provide our protection is a passion many of us
share.
Albeit a small attempt to repay the debt we owe to all who serve in our military, this past September River Landing hosted
the Scarlet & Gold Invitational Golf Tournament. The proceeds from that event, which were nearly $200,000, went to Hope
For The Warriors. For those not familiar, Hope For The
Warriors is a civilian 501(c)(3) tax-exempt nonprofit organization. In 2013, nearly 4,000 military families from all military
branches, were served by this organization whose mission is simple yet profound: The mission of Hope For The Warriors is
to enhance the quality of life for post-9/11 service members, their families, and families of the fallen who have sustained
physical and psychological wounds in the line of duty. Hope For The Warriors is dedicated to restoring a sense of self,
restoring the family unit, and restoring hope for our service members and our military families.
A very special THANK YOU to the many River Landing volunteers who made this event possible. And thank you to everyone for allowing us to use your community for this special event.
This month, we will once again be hosting Marines in our homes for Thanksgiving. Having participated in this event in the
past, I can say without question, we created memories that will last a lifetime. If you are able to host a Marine this year, I
know it will be appreciated!!
Thank you for making River Landing a great place to live!

2014 River Landing Member & 3 Guests
There are some days you wonder “could the weather get any better” and the 3 days of the tournament were just that, perfect! We witnessed
some heroic awe-inspiring golf shots as well as shots which make you realize the short-game is very important during the Member & 3 Guests
Shootout! Congratulations to our Flight Winners as well as all who participated.

2014 Couples Club Championship & 2014 Couples Cup Champion
Congratulations to the 2014 Couples Club Champions Garry and Shelley Moorefield and runner-up Skip & Carol Romanet. The Moorefields
shot a sizzling gross 71 which included 3 team bogies and 2 birdies apiece.
Congratulations to the 2014 Couples Cup Champions Richard & Carol Russell and to the runner-up Mike & Elaine Masinick. Both teams shot
a fantastic 12 under round of 60 leaving very few holes not being birdied.
Many questions arise around the difference between the two competitions and I wanted to define them in hopes many more would be interested in participating in these events. The Couples Club Championship is based on a gross competition (handicap strokes are not used) between
husband and wife with the better of their scores counting for the hole. Yes it’s for better players and we have quite a few couples who could win
this Championship. The Couples Cup is based after the PGA Tour’s Fed Ex Cup with 4 events throughout the year allowing couples to build
points with the final being a double points event. It is based on a net competition (handicap strokes are used) between husband and wife with
the better net score of the hole counting for the team. Yes it is for all handicap types and contrary to some, anyone can win the Couples Cup
individual events as well as the overall.
Holes-N-One
Congratulations to JoAnn Phillips for taking the time to play a round of golf October 2nd, when she should have been getting ready for her family to visit for
the Member & 3 Guests. During her hurried round, she decided to make it even faster by making a “1” on the 8th hole of The Landing Course from 136 yards
using her famous 5-wood.

Reminders
Cigarette Butts & Trash – Please keep River Landing Green & Clean “No butts about it!” We would like to inform all smokers we do have ashtrays for golf carts so please ask the staff for one and help us keep our golf courses free of butts!!!
Safety First – Please wait for the golfers ahead of you to clear the landing area before you hit your next shot. It only takes 1 errant shot to
change our community, are you really impatient enough to jeopardize someone’s life. If you are, think about someone doing the same thing to
your spouse, child or best friend. It’s just a game!
Cigarettes & Ashtrays – Please do not through cigarette butts on our golf courses. We do have ashtrays available for our golf carts, please ask
for one and refrain from throwing your butts on the ground!!!
Golf Shop Vendors – Please know just because you don’t see it in the golf shop doesn’t mean we can’t order it! We can compete and usually offer a better price on new product than most golf stores. Please ask a member of the golf staff for a price if you don’t see it in the golf shop.
Golf Course Assets – Please, Please, Please return any cart towels you may have accidentally taken home or left in your trunks.
Credit Book Balance – Each member can access their credit book balance on WebRes to double-check your balances.
Decorative Grasses – Please do not drive golf carts or push carts through the new decorative grasses. There should never be any vehicles in the
grass and there are tracks where someone has driven through. This will not be tolerated.
Back Driving Range – Please keep golf cart traffic limited to the cart path or beside the south practice tee. Our maintenance staff is trying to
improve and beautify our practice area and the traffic elimination will help substantially.
Hopping Rides – Please remember it is against our rules to hitch a ride on a golf cart at any time during your round if you are walking. This
unfortunately will result in both the walker and cart driver paying an additional cart fee.
Golf Cart Pairing Up – Are you one of the many groups who need 3 carts for 3 or 4 players? Please pair up when leaving the 1st Tee and make
sure there are 2 riders in each cart. It is careless and adds age to our cart fleet!

2014 RL GALS SWING FOR THE CURE...
IN THE PINK!
Thanks to the generosity of many people inside and outside of River Landing, the RL
GALS’ 10th Annual “Swing for the Cure” tournament and associated activities raised
over $14,000 for the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center’s breast cancer
research. These funds came from helicopter ball drop ticket sales, golf tournament
participants, hole sponsors, donations, a silent auction and a raffle for a handmade
quilt by the Island Creek Quilters of River Landing.
The “Swing” events began Friday night, October 17th with the dramatic helicopter
ball drop of 1,112 golf balls on the 14th fairway of the River Course. Three golf balls
landed in or close to the hole across from the River Landing Clubhouse; and the winners who purchased the raffle ticket numbers written on those golf balls shared the
winnings and they were: Gerri Hanson, Kathy Lord, and Charlie and Daryl Steinbraker.
RL Chef Solomon and his staff prepared an excellent buffet of heavy hors d’oeuvres –
the proceeds from the sale of the food donated by River Landing also benefited UNC
Lineberger. Jacqueline Hough from the Duplin Times covered the event -- look for her
article in the upcoming edition. The helicopter ball drop 50/50 raffle ticket sales raised
$6,320 (of which $3,160 is donated to UNC Lineberger and the other 50 percent is
shared by the winners).
On Saturday 87 golfers enjoyed a gorgeous day on the Landing Course and were
joined by several RLGALS members for another excellent buffet of delicacies prepared
by Chef Solomon and his staff. At this luncheon the winners of the tournament were
announced and prizes were awarded to the following ladies: First Place, Flight 1:
Sheila Bertoldi, Suzie Hurlee, Lynn Downing, and Mary Simmons. Second Place, Flight
1: Maureen McCarthy, Maureen Albano, Nancy Mercure and Jean Schnurr. Third Place,
Flight 1: Sue Bartnick, Mary Garrison, Mary Beth Peters and Roseann Collingwood.
First Place, Flight 2: JoAnn Patti, Mary Manganiello, Bonnie Seybold and Joy Young.
Second Place, Flight 2: Pat Simpson, Peg Bodine, Kaye Pulzone and Pat Schaeffer.
Third Place, Flight 3: Sandra Phillips, Sandy Forehand, Cheryl Partyka, and Bobbi Izzo.
In addition, the following ladies won prizes for closest to the pin on #5 and #11 as well as closest to the line: Anita Wagner,
Linda Guglielmi and Debra Makins. The winner of the beautiful quilt called “Circles of Hope” handmade and donated by
the Island Quilters of River Landing was Anna Phillips. The highest bid for an Estate Planning package donated by Hunter
& Price was $1,200. Hunter and Price also donated pink cooler bags for the ladies participating in the golf tournament and
attending the luncheon.
This year’s Swing for the Cure was a tremendous success because of the efforts of many people and we would like to thank
them all for their assistance in organizing and raising funds for the helicopter ball drop, the golf tournament, hole sponsorships, quilt raffle, and the auction for the estate planning package: Kaye Pulzone, Anita Wagner, Jan Zoesch, Carol Whalen,
Sue Bartnick, Linda Guglielmi, Island Creek Quilters, Kathie Davis, Mazie Furness, Cam McLemore, Kevin Caulfield, Larry
George, Drew McLure and all of the Pro Shop staff. We would also like to thank Chef Solomon and the banquet staff as well
as all of the volunteers at the registration desk, the pink ball hole, and the beverage stations on the Landing Course. Special thanks to Bobbi and Paul Izzo for lending their excellent photography skills.

Carol was one of 3,405 participants and 76 flights -- six of those being women's flights. Participants play four
different courses over four days with the net winner in each flight playing on the 5th and final day for the overall
championship. Carol missed the final day by only 2 shots!
This year’s visit to UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center took place on September 18th and included a
tour of the new Marsico Building next to the Lineberger Hospital. We toured the facility and saw the new research
and high imaging processes that are so important to the search for a cure for breast cancer. Jennifer Bowman was
our host for the day. In addition, Dr. Weili Lin, one of the Lineberger researchers, explained the equipment they are
using and how our seed grant fund benefits the research that is being done there. We then toured the hospital
where we saw the wig boutique and patient care facilities. The money the RLGALS raise at our annual Swing for the
Cure, goes to the RLGALS Fund for Breast Cancer Research Endowed Fund. The RL GALS have raised $52,803 from
2008-2013.
Tar Heels: Nine members of RL GALS played on September 18th at the Coharie Country Club and the winners were:

they won 1st low gross in their respective flights.

Tournament at Masonboro Country Club in Wilmington. Congratulations to Treva Croker and Mary Garrison who
were on the 1st place team and Brenda Long who was on the 2nd place team. Treva also won a prize for her "closest to the pin" shot! Thanks to all
seven golfers for representing River Landing so well.
Coastal Senior Women’s Golf League (CSWGL): On October 13th, several RL GALS participated in a CSWGL tournament at Pine Valley and Carol

The Island Creek Quilt Club Met October 14th for a Demonstration, Meeting and Sew-A-Thon.
It was a packed house in the Members Room on Tuesday, October 14th.
Judi Davis and Ellen Yurow demonstrated basting a quilt and Pam Reinhardt demonstrated quilting in the ditch,
two techniques for beginning the finishing touches on a quilt.
We had a very productive meeting. Next year’s quilt program was discussed and plans are being finalized for the
Island Creek Quilt Club’s 2015 season.
The Holiday Luncheon is set for Thursday, December 11th, at 12:00 in the River Room at the Clubhouse. We will
have a Fat Quarter Gift Exchange.
Once again, Show and Tell was inspiring and fun!
The remainder of the afternoon was spent practicing quilting and basting and working on individual projects.
The quilt group will meet next month on Tuesday, November 11th. We will demonstrate how to make binding and
how to attach the binding to a quilt. The finishing touch! We will continue to discuss and finalize plans for 2015.
It is never too late to join the quilt club. If anyone is interested in joining the Island Creek Quilt Club, or if anyone
has questions regarding the above information, please do not hesitate to contact either Pam Reinhardt (pameal@

RIVER LANDING WELCOMES THE MARINES BACK FOR THANKSGIVING!
What Are Your Plans For Thanksgiving?
For several years, many families within the River Landing community have been gracious enough to share their Thanksgiving
holiday with Marines from Camp Lejeune. In the past, the Marines have enjoyed home-cooked meals and a day full of activities including golf, swimming, canoeing, basketball, or just hanging out in the living room watching football and relaxing.
Our committee is working hard to place 110 Marines in homes here at River
Landing. We are very close to our goal, but we still need to place 40 more
Marines.
Please consider having a Marine spend the day with you so that they will be
able to leave the base for the day and enjoy all that River Landing has to offer.
For those of you who would like to host Marines for Thanksgiving, please
contact: Ted White, tedwhiteva@gmail.com, 910-665-1211
Please provide the following information:

2014 Thanksgiving Action Plan
We are planning on hosting approximately 110 Marines this year. They will arrive via
an escorted bus convoy at the Clubhouse around 8:30 and must be back at the Fitness
Center by 6:30. The Marines will be in pairs so you will be hosting at least two depending
on how many host families we have.
On October 21st, Mr. Jack Carver, Mr. Tom DeSanctis and Cam McLemore traveled to
meet with the Leadership at Camp Lejeune to showcase an informational video to entice
signups for our event!
A big thanks to Susan Goodrich of the Single Marines Program at Camp Lejeune for
sharing this video with all Military Installations in California last week! Here is a quote
from Susan's Experience "The video was well received and hopefully will influence others
to partner with their communities as well." Once again River Landing is a trend setter!
RLMGA News
We are winding up the 2014 RLMGA season! But first, we have a few more memories to add to the season.
A new name is added to the Village Cup Plaque in the men's locker room! Bring on The Vineyards! Thanks to a
major effort on the part of out world class Tournament team ( Denny Zalar and Bob Miller), We had divided up
the field of 66 golfers into 11 very well defined villages. The Village that has bragging rights for the 2014 match
proved that being consistent is the key to winning golf tourneys. The team of Jim Mercure,Clyde Morton, Bill
Palmer and Jim Frater proved that they had what it takes to add the name VINEYARDS to the trophy. To quote
team member Frater " We didn't loose our focus on winning the prize even though we had the longest commute
to the tee boxes...just sayin.." ( well maybe the only part of that quote from Jim was the "just sayin" part..
The rest of the field has a full year to work on getting their name on this coveted plaque . And where did this
extraordinary piece of handiwork come from you say?? Well it came from the workshop of our own RLMGA
member Tom Houf, Thanks Tom.
The RLMGA boys were on the road again this month and added a trip to Kinston Country Club to their list of the
conquered Golf establishments in the eastern part of NC. Many matches were well contested, but as the cream
did rise to the top at the end. After two cancellations for very unfortunate reasons, 22 MGA players descended on
Kinston where a shotgun start at 0930 awaited. It is a pretty course with very old (spelled LARGE) trees dominate
the landscape and loom large over the fairways. The humidity was building for the players and then a two-club
wind brought relief from the heat. In first place with an average score of 19.33 were Henry Briley, Gary Coe, Dave
Gray, and Tom Wilders. Second place was claimed by Dick White, Jim Bodine, Bob Wagner, and Gary Wintrode
with an average score of 19.00. In third place with a score of 17.00 was Mike Masinick, Mike Vandiver, and Keith
Jay.
We continued our new tradition of "DOGS AND SUDS" and over 60 of RLMGAs finest were treated to the culinary
skills of non other than Dale Scheinsberg. WOW,, this guy not only can act ( as an extra in some productions in
the Wilmington film industry), but BUT can he cook!!
Our membership continues to be proud of the efforts of the RLMGA leadership team this year. A few quotes from
the field include , " Boy what a great opportunity to make new friends " , and " Here is a great group of guys who
are willing to help out a neighbor in need , they are good friends and neighbors , not just a bunch of golfers".We
are proud that the RLMGA has had the opportunity to serve as a great social connector for our members.
The SWING for the CURE tourney would be the same without the dedicated work of the open bars during the
day. Yes you guessed it folks, these bars will be staffed by the multi-talented men of the RLMGA! (
Next month , we will be electing a new MGA Board to carry us into 2015. As per our by-laws, current VP , Paul
Izzo will take the helm as our President next year filling the very big shoes being left by Skip Romanett. Dave
Gray and John Goodman, will be battling it out for the VP position. Ed Braks will be running to fill in the unexpired Treasurers spot that John Goodman is leaving as he runs for VP. Gary Wintrode has thrown his hat in the
ring to take over the reigns of the Secretary spot from Dave Gray. Huck Booz will be running for a second term as
one of the Members at Large. The new board will be chosen and announced later next month. They will have the
winter time to review the current programs and come up with the 2015 version of the RLMGA which will start in
Feb 2015.
That is all for now. Please visit us on RLMGA.INFO to keep up with our activities.

From Chef Soloman
Dear Members,
It feels like Fall is in the air at River Landing. That means many exciting events coming up for the rest of 2014.
Some new things and some tried and true old favorites! So mark your calendars for the following events:
With the chill in the air, it’s a perfect time for a traditional Southern Oyster Roast. Ours will be held at the River
Lodge on Friday, November 7th. From roasted to on the half shell, there will be plenty of salty bivalves for all to
enjoy. We’ll even have some good old NC yard bird (a.k.a. chicken)
for those who are not oyster lovers. Check the weekly calendar and
eblast for all the details.
Thursday, November 13th Stone Crab will be our special in the
Berkshire Grille and Lakeview Rooms.
A Wine Dinner is scheduled for Thursday, November 20th in the River
Room. We will have more details as the day gets closer.
To finish out November with a BANG ─ our Thanksgiving Buffet will
be on Thursday, November 27th. This year we will have traditional fare
with some new twists I’ve added. Bring the family and enjoy the buffet.
And, we do the dishes!!
Our traditional Gingerbread Class will be on Thursday, December 4th
in the Members Room at the Fitness Center.
Come and join us for all the festivities. As always, I look forward to hearing your feedback.
See you at the Club!

News From The POA
In an effort to reduce costs and become more environmentally friendly, the River Landing Property Owners Association, Inc. will be transitioning to an electronic billing system for 2015. In previous years the POA has notified
property owners of the annual assessment through the U.S. Postal Service, however this year the notices for 2015
assessments will be sent via email. It is therefore crucial that we have the correct email address for each of our
property owners in order for the transition to be successful.
Notification of assessments will be emailed by December 1st, 2014. You will receive two separate emails; one from
the POA explaining the assessments, and one from the accounting office at Murphy Family Ventures with the actual
invoice.
It is important that the POA maintains current records for all property owners. Please be sure to notify us any time
you have changes to your personal information in order to stay properly informed and to avoid any potential issues
with your account. You may update or confirm your information by contacting Melinda Bond, POA Administrative
Assistant, at 910-285-1038, or melinda_bond@riverlanding.com.
Thank you in advance for your cooperation during this transition, and for your support of River Landing and your
Property Owners Association!
