Minutes of October Meeting
John Marion, President of the Cedar Valley Woodcarvers
(CVWC), called the October 14, 2014 meeting to order at
7:00pm.
MINUTES FROM LAST MEETING
Minutes from the last meeting were approved.
ELECTIONS COMING UP
We will have elections for officers in December. If you would
like to run for an office, let Don Potter and Larry Sylvester
(show committee) know. You can run for any office, however
there are two openings that we need to fill – Vice President and
Treasurer. As of this meeting, Tom Roe will be running for
Treasurer, Kevin Booth for VP, John Marion for President and
Laurie Frisch for Secretary.
AT-LARGE BOARD MEMBER
Note: This was not mentioned in the meeting but we will also be
voting for an at-large board member, so let Don Potter and
Larry Sylvester (show committee) know if you want to run.
CLUB PROJECT
Reminder – staff blocks are due by Thanksgiving. Please finish
up the blocks you are working on.
CLASSES
Rick Jensen’s class will start Friday Oct 31st at Larry
Sylvester’s. It is currently full.
Kirt Curtis’s bobcat class is almost done, we will be getting
together to paint them at a future date.
501c3 APPLICATION
Application has been approved. They selected “public charity”
as the type so we will have no federal tax but possibly state tax.
Also you will be able to write off membership and donations on
your tax return. Now we can apply for gambling.

SHOW COMMITTEE REPORT
Our CVWC show is planned for Sat March 7, 9-5 and Sunday
March 8, 10-4. It will be held in a new location, at the
Kirkwood Training and Outreach Center in Marion, Iowa, 3375
Armar Dr.
Sherri Wilcox is accepting applications for the show tables.
You may donate items to be auctioned off or for door prizes at
the banquet. Show committee members are Sherri Wilcox, Al
Avis, Clark Crane or Linda Curtis.
HOLIDAY PARTY IN DEC
During our regular meeting time, we will have a holiday party.
Bring a guest or guests and a dish to share.
CARVE AN ORNAMENT FOR GIFT EXCHANGE
Just for fun - carve an ornament, wrap it and bring it to the
December meeting, if you want to participate in a gift
exchange. Only those who bring a gift may participate.

CLUB DUES
Dues are officially due by Jan 1st. You may pay early if you
wish. Dues are $15 if paid on time, but they jump up to $20
after March 1.

Note from President
Tuesday, November 11th at 7pm
Here we are again holding our breaths for the first snow.
Last Monday I was out golfing in NE Iowa and the temperatures
were in the 70's. Here it is Friday of the same week and I have
no idea what happened to our summer. All I know is it was very
chilly this morning when I stepped out the door. As I was
driving to Larrys for Rick Jensen’’s class even my truck
recognized the drop in temperature when it beeped 3 times and a
message appeared saying to drive carefully, may experience icy
roads. My first thought was what the heck is going on here but
then I was thankful I wasn't drinking coffee, smoking a cigarette
or talking on the cell phone because if it was icy, I could
possibly now be in the ditch. There it was, another thought, right
in front of me. Just because someone or something says you
may have a problem, most of the time it isn't that big of one. All
you need do is listen to reason from a reasonable stand point. It
is from there that you can easily figure out life is good!
What a difference our club has experienced since the beginning
of the year. I must say that I for one am very pleased with our
progress. We have experienced some ups and downs but all in
all, as a club, we have a lot to be thankful for this Thanksgiving.
Once again I want to thank you for your continued support
because without it this job I have would be impossible at best. I
have talked to people at Congress and also at Doane this year
about their clubs and what they do to maintain and improve.
What I have deducted after these conversations is the Cedar
Valley Woodcarvers Club is not perfect but we’re more than
pretty darn good and I hope you are proud of that fact.
Remember the elections are in December and if you’ré
interested in a position please contact Don Potter or Larry
Sylvester. I apologize for my memory loss at the last meeting
but we also have an opening for a board member. Sherrie
Wilcox's term is also up at the end of 2014. This is a two year
position.
Now that the Holiday seasons are upon us take the time
enjoy them. Also take a little time out for our less fortunate
members because of circumstances beyond their control. You
need not look very far to realize how good you really do have it.






At each meeting, we have a “library” of books available to
check out.
We have classes after the meeting, usually free or a small
fee for materials
You can inquire at ACME tools to buy carving tools to get
started. For example, the 11 piece Flexcut set with
detachable handle or the 3 piece knife set. If not in stock
they will order them for you. ACME has agreed to match
any internet price on tools and it is 10% off for club
members (for non-powered tools only).
Newell Sutton brings wood to the meeting to sell. It is good
carving wood and a reasonable price.
The club has a sharpener that Kirt Curtis made. Scott Garbe
brings it to the club meetings and has it out in his vehicle
and he will bring it in if someone wants to use it.
