Southern Cross kids Camp ‘Yarra Ranges’
Southern Cross Kids' Camps aim to provide a week of happy memories for kids who
are doing it tough. The kids who attend are referred to us through Government
Departments & associated agencies. We love to have kids return to camp for
several years, as this builds excitement and hope into what may otherwise be a
generally unpleasant life.
We have had the honour to partner with Oasis Campsite for the past 7yrs. Oasis has
provided the perfect venue for us. The wide range of activities, suit our kids well.
The candle making and Eco centre give that 'something different & special feel’ to
camp. The variety of meeting spaces are great and the overall upgrade of the
entire facility is impressive.
While all of that is important, it is the people who make Oasis what it is. The staff
are incredible! I love their heart and passion for their work. Nothing is too much
trouble. We love Oasis because of John, Rhonda, JB & the entire team. Thanks
guys, can't wait to return for our next exciting adventure!
Pete Lusk, Southern Cross Kids' Camps.
Staff Profile:
JB (John Burgum)
What is your role at Oasis?
My position at Oasis is the Activities Co-ordinator & 2IC
I’m responsible for organising all the activity
programs for the groups coming in. I also help with the day to day
running of the camp including cleaning, maintenance,
kitchen hand etc.
What do you like most about your Job?
Engaging and getting to know the campers on the activities and running big wide games.
How long have you been working at Oasis.
My family and I moved to Oasis in January 2010, so about 2.5 years now.
Why have you chosen to live and work on a camp.
I love the camping industry, especially the interaction with the variety of groups that come in. I
believe we have around 6500 people come through each year which means we get to meet a lot of
interesting and great people. I also love taking kids/youth on out outdoor rec activities and letting
them experience things they haven’t done before, I especially love the look on a kids face’s when we
put a 3m python over their shoulders for the first time, it’s a look of excitement and absolute terror.
You’ve been able to work on a few camps in your work life, what makes Oasis different?
I believe it’s it uniqueness. When I first started here I had never handled reptiles, candle making or
the crate climb and it’s quite a beautiful location surrounded by beautiful gardens and bushland.
What’s one of your most memorable moments at Oasis.
I’ve had many great moments here at Oasis but the ones that stand out the most are when the
Southern Cross kids come. One of their particular activities they run is ‘make up’s’ and if you’re lucky
enough, as I have been, you get the pleasure of sitting with the kids and getting your finger nails
painted. It just brings out the feminine side in me!!!

opportunity to enjoy a week away on an amazing, encouraging, supportive camp
experience.
There are a few ways in which you can help support us and become part of the team
here at Oasis. Please contact us at camp and we would be pleased to talk with you
