BOOK SIGNING – The just-released book
by T.J. Gaffney and Dean Pyers, “Images
of Rail, Pere Marquette 1225,” will be featured 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Nov. 8, when
the authors will be in the Steam Railroading Institute’s museum, 405 S. Washington
in Owosso, to autograph purchased copies
for everyone who stops by the SRI.
This book presents the history of Steam Locomotive 1225, one of 38 Berkshire Class 28-4s built between 1937 and 1944. This locomotive is best known for being the sound and
image behind the movie adaptation of Chris
Van Allsburg’s “The Polar Express.” The story is a very interesting one and will take readers back to a time when whistles in the night
charged imagination and the United States
truly was the “Arsenal of Democracy.”
Gaffney was the SRI’s executive director
during the highly successful Train Festival
just over five years ago, which attracted
more than 35,000 people to Owosso for the
weekend. It included major draws, including a locomotive from the West Coast.

New Comedy Club
From Theresa Trecha
Capitol Bowl is bringing comedy back to Owosso with our Winter Series, Comedy Night-Date Night! Laugh with nationally touring comedians on stage as Capitol Bowl’s Hot Spot Lounge is transformed into a
comedy club one Friday every month through April 2015. The headliners
are affiliated with popular radio shows, such as Bob & Tom, The Comedy
Channel and national news networks.
Opening acts may be affiliated with the headlining comic or a MidMichigan talent, and get the audience warmed-up with their 10 to 20minute segment. A comedy show is a fun night out for all adults, those
just starting to date, couples wanting a change of pace and groups of
friends looking for a reason to get together! Upcoming shows are Nov. 14,
Dec. 19, Jan. 16, Feb. 20, March 20 and April 17. They start at approximately 9 p.m. and end by 11:15 p.m.
For those not ready to call it a night, a local DJ plays following the show
for your dancing/listening pleasure. So far, the Hot Spot has hosted three
comics—The Disgruntled Clown (June), Vic Clevenger (Sept.) and Billy
Ray Bauer (Oct.). It’s not about the specific talent, but the commitment
Capitol Bowl’s Hot Spot Lounge has made to host nationally recognized
comedians for our community to enjoy. Make plans to visit the only comedy club in Owosso and the largest one in the county! Ticket prices are
the same for all shows, $7 in advance and $12 day of show. At the end of
each show, patrons may visit with the headliner and also buy tickets for
the next show at $5 each. Enjoy dinner/snacks from the extensive menu
offered by Val’s Pizzeria before or during the show along with a variety
of drink specials. With the success of this comedy series, Capitol Bowl’s
Hot Spot Lounge positions itself to attract more well known comedians
for special shows in the future.
In addition to comedy, Capitol Bowl’s Hot Spot regularly hosts DJs and
Bands on Friday and Saturday nights, offers indoor cornhole/bean bag
toss (free open play) on Tuesdays and Wednesdays 4 to 10 p.m. and a
Vintage Skeeball game costing just 25 cents to play.
Since the rebuild in 2006, Capitol Bowl has continued to innovate by
adding entertainment options for all ages including: the Arcade and
Summer Indoor Miniature Golf in 2008; partnering with the Matthies
family in 2009 to re-open Val’s Pizzeria; and since Aug. 27 of this year,
is one of only two bowling centers in the United States with EZBOWL
and HORSE games offered in addition to traditional 10-pin bowling as
a lead test center for Brunswick’s new SYNC Scoring System. For more
information, may visit the center’s overall home page capitolbowl.net or
call (989) 725-7717.
Letter to the Editor
Editor, The Independent:
Thanks to fracking (removing oil from shale), the price of oil is dropping
to a four-year low of $80 a barrel. The Saudis are lowering the price of
oil so it’s not feasible for America to continue research and development
of more shale oil. What the Saudis are doing is a move to stymie our oil
production and guarantee that they will be a major economic powerhouse
and keep America weak and dependent on their oil.
I belief that the EPA and other special interest groups are doing every- HIGHLIGHTS
thing they can to hinder the production of shale oil. Extensive testing
has proven that the EPA has not shown substantial proof that fracking is

created and ran gas from 35 cents a gallon to 55 cents a gallon.
Fracking has contaminated water sources in some areas due to
cracked cement casings or human error. It is by far easier to contain and repair, with far less contamination than
water drilling.
Considering the nearly 3,000 deaths in
the Twin Towers, almost 5,000 deaths
fighting in the Middle East, trillions spent
fighting a war that has no end in sight, it’s a
no-brainer that fracking can be the answer
for our fuel needs. Let’s continue solving
our oil dependence and see how long they
will fight and kill for sand instead of oil.
One more thing that would eliminate the
rigging of oil prices would be to remove oil
from the commodities market so the Middle East can’t play the game of running the
price of oil up on the futures market and
never actually take possession of the oil.
Oil companies that would want protection
from falling oil prices when they spend
hundreds of millions on research and development could do that through insurance
companies instead of the commodities.
These two things could obviously return us to prosperity if our politicians had

HONORING VETS
– Owosso Free Methodist Church, 1249
N. Chipman, will celebrate a Veterans’ Day
Service during the Sunday, Nov. 9, 10:45 a.m.
Worship Service. A
color guard, including
members of the Marine Corps League, will
post flags to salute veterans who have served
our country. A member
of the congregation,
retired Senior Master
Sergeant Bill Butler
shared that, “We want
to honor our veterans
and have a gift for every veteran at the service.” Butler served in the Navy during the Vietnam era, also as an Air Force recruiter following his years of active duty.
Featured speaker for the special Veterans Service is retired Army Command Sergeant Major, Rev. Mark Kincaid. During his 25-year career in the Army, CSM Kincaid
served three years in mechanized infantry, three years in
the 1st Ranger Battalion and 19 years in the Special Forces (Green Berets), assigned to 3rd Special Forces Group
(Airborne), 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne), and 7th
special Forces Group (Airborne), traveling the world and
working in 35 countries.
Rev. Kincaid grew up in Michigan and has lived in Kansas, Texas, North Carolina, Georgia and Alabama, as well
as four years in Panama. He has also conducted mission
trips to Central America, helping to build six churches
and one Christian school.
For the last 13 years, Rev. Kincaid has served at the
Owosso Free Methodist Church, where he is the Senior
Pastor. Over the years he and his wife have been Youth
Pastors, overseen adult ministries, led worship, served on
a number of boards and served in leadership positions
within the local church.
CSM (Retired) Kincaid enjoys endurance sports and after turning 50 years of age has completed a full Ironman
event, run numerous marathons and trail runs, including
distances of 50K, 50 miles and 100K. He still runs and
conducts fitness exercises on a regular basis.
Rev. Mark Kincaid (Command Sgt. Major, Retired), is
married to Madbely Kincaid, has four daughters and four
