Watch your back......literally
By SHANT CHAKMAKIAN
Personal security can be
a tricky thing, especially when there
are lots of tuffguys,
creepers and thieves
lurking the streets.
But if you make a few
small habits a part of
your everyday life,
you’ll find the world
around you to be a
safer place.
Theft is a common
problem that affects
us all, from being mugged to
someone breaking into your
car or locker. Unfortunately
the months of September
and October at NAIT are
the highest times of car and
locker theft. Generally locker
theft happens in smaller more
isolated hallways during class
but it also frequently happens
in busier high traffic areas…like the freaking E wing!
Generally theives watch one
insert valuable contents into
their locker, such as a laptop
or iPod, and then they return
later with a handy set of bolt
clippers to claim your property.
Textbooks are also a very
hot item because reselling
them is as easy as standing outside the bookstore,
so please always put your
name and number on your
textbooks. Some of you may
notice your lock was cut
off, and your locker is open
among others, please report
this to security immediately,
and also after locking your
locker, give it a tug to ensure
it is secure.
And unfortunately, I hate
to say that even your ride is
“
ter? Well the most prudent
method of action is to note
the individual(s)’ description,
clothing, body type, height
and location then phone security at extension 7477 on any
internal phone within NAIT,
or on your cell phone at 4717477. Also please don’t stare
at or provoke the individuals
in any way, we want you to
help make the NAIT campus
a safer place but
not at your own
expense and safety.
And as
unfortunate as it is
that I have to even
write about this,
even the women’s
washrooms are not
safe in terms of
privacy. Although
security may take
whatever reasonable measures it can against
peeping toms placing a tiny
camera in a vent above one’s
stall, it is impossible to have
them all locked down. My
tip? Take good look around
and above you, especially of
you see a vent. And as much
as I don’t want to make you
paranoid I want you all to be
security savvy, because the
only person you can always
depend on to watch your own
back is you!!!
...unfortunately, I hate to
say that even your ride is a
prime target...

SPORTS
High hopes for NAIT athletics
By JASON JONES
Another year of school means
another year of expectations and
hope. With fresh-faced students
proving themselves to teachers,
their selves, and potential
employers, a portion of those
students are also doing that
twice over – with NAIT athletics.
Last season had mixed results
with some teams winning it all
while other rebuilt their teams
with hopes that this year will be
different.
Like in classes, everyone
starts at zero. Everyone’s equal
until they take the test or play
the game. But before anyone
can succeed or fail, plenty of
preparation happens. Here’s a
look at a few of the NAIT teams
and their prospects for this
season.
Men’s Hockey
-Terry Ballard
After
finishing
6th in
their
division
last season
and losing
in the first
round
of the
playoffs,
the men’s
hockey
team is looking for much
improvement this year. With
captain Ben Stokes, leading
scorer Adam Ferrante, and
Brandon Hill returning, the
coaching staff is confident that
they can build off their good
nucleus from last season.
The team also aggressively
recruited in the off-season,
nabbing Cameron Breitkreuz,
Mark Thompson, Guillaume
Martel, and Cedrick Duhamel.
Coach Ballard says “we want to
make this the most competitive
camp we have had for several
years, starting off with a bang
and building each week into a
stronger and better team.” Look
for the Ooks to be better this
year.”
Women’s hockey
-Keith Garner
Coach
Garner
says,
“I am
looking
forward
to my 6th
season
with the
NAIT
Ooks
women’s
hockey
program. Entering my second
year as the head coach, I hope
to build on the success of
last season. A core group of
returning athletes combined
with a number of solid prospects
will continue the momentum
from 2005/06 into this new
season. Players and coaches
are excited to get the season
underway.”
The team has made a number
of additions to the coaching
staff. Former NAIT Ook Lindsay
Ferguson, a recent graduate
from the NAIT personal fitness
program, has signed on as
the Ooks trainer. Also new
are: assitant coach Adrianne
VanderZalm (former 5 year U of
A Panda player), goalie coach
Sean Hallonquist, and assistant
coach Stephen Garner.
Men’s Volleyball
-Craig Wourms
Said coach Wourms: “Big change
this year.
Only two
or three
players
are
returning
from last
season’s
bronze
medal
team.
However,
that strong
finish last year has developed
into the team’s strongest group
of recruits I’ve ever had. There is
a very strong mix of Provincial
and National Champions.
“The coaching staff has also
added some depth. Jared Bonnett
is moving from the court to the
bench after playing three years
for NAIT. Bryan Risselada is also
joining the coaching staff after
playing three years at NAIT and
two years at the University of
Regina.
“This big, young, powerful
team is going to be fun to
work with and I look forward
to the type of product we can
potentially put on the court.”
Women’s Volleyball
– Trever Turner
After
finishing
first in
their
division
last
season,
there
are high
expectations for the club this
year. The team is returning six
players: Erin Kerschbaumer,
Pearl Grabski, Jaimie Swanson,
Jamie Bloxham, Angela
Maheden, and Natasha Milberry.
Kerschbaumer’s play will be key
to the team this year as she was
the outstanding female athlete
last year and an All-Canadian
(one of two players selected).
The team is also adding to
that core with these recruits:
Britney Allen, Ellen Rushton,
Janelle Ewen, Kaila Philips, and
Jana Champagne.
One notable change is that
there is a new league format
so the Ooks will be competing
against some quality programs.
They will play Macewan, King’s,
Red Deer, Mount Royal, Grande
Prairie and Briercrest four times
each.
Coach Turner says, “overall
it will be an exciting season with
quality matches each weekend
and we expect to be competing
for the ACAC title.”

ENTERTAINMENT
Rock and hop at Ookfest
By YURI WUENSCH
Ookfest represents
NAIT’s opportunity to welcome students, new and old,
back to school with a night
of rockin’, rollin’, rhymes,
beats and beer.
And who better to greet
them than one of the city’s
favourite and most-successful college dropouts
– Edmonton’s preeminent
hip-hop artist, Cadence
Weapon.
Joining him on the Ookfest bill is Metric, Yellowcard, Danko Jones, Thornley
and more than a dozen
other acts.
Last year, more than 6,000
students, alumni and guests
took to NAIT’s soccer field
for Canada’s biggest campus party and this year’s
event will be even bigger,
with three stages, an expanded site, demonstrations
from Freestyle Motocross
and 1664 BMX Ltd. and
much more.
Ookfest kicks off Saturday afternoon.
Cadence Weapon, otherwise known as Rollie
Pemberton, did indeed drop
out of an all-black school in
Virginia a couple years ago.
However, he did so with
his hip-hop career in mind
and envisions going postsecondary again to pursue
music engineering.
The 20-year-old describes
his college experience as interesting, but not especially
challenging.
“It was a fairly conservative and pretty strict
school,” he recalls. “You
weren’t allowed to have sex
on campus and you couldn’t
wear a hat indoors. I wanted
to go to Columbia in New
York, but it was out of my
means.
“I was also making music
at the same time and I just
felt like it was more important to get out there and
make a run at it. I wanted
to do what I’m doing now,
before somebody else got to
it first.”
His risk paid off.
The phenomenal reception to Pemberton’s debut
album, Breaking Kayfabe,
has seen him touring across
North America and receiving widespread critical
acclaim.
This year, URB, an internationally recognized
hip-hop and urban culture
magazine based out of L.A.,
placed Pemberton on its
Next 100 list, an influential
and prestigious catalogue
of the music scene’s latest
movers and shakers.
The album has also been
nominated for the inaugural Polaris Music Prize, a
$20,000 award created to
honour Canada’s best album
based on creative quality,
irrespective of musical genre
and sales figures.
Breaking Kayfabe is pitted against releases by other
Canadian acts like Broken
Social Scene, K’Naan, Wolf
Parade and fellow Ookfest
headliners, Metric. The winner will be announced at a
gala in Toronto on Sept. 18.
“It’s incredible to be placed
with these bands that have
such a headstart on me,”
says Pemberton of his album’s nomination. “I never
expected to get such immediate attention; I thought I’d
have to grind it out in the
stix.
“I’m really surprised
people liked it so quickly. I
thought maybe I’d end up
being a fringe artist with a
cult following, but now I’m
popular in the mainstream,
which is interesting to me.”
Even Pitchfork Media, a
brainy and stringent website
devoted to all things musicrelated, had to grudgingly
give the album a positive
review, despite once handing Pemberton a pink slip.
He freelanced for the site a
couple years ago, but Pitchfork let him go, saying his
reviews lacked “clarity.” Not
to worry; Pemberton is still
penning words locally for
See Magazine.
The response he gets on
tour has been anything but
ambiguous, however. And
interesting since the album’s
glitchy beats and rhymes
speak directly to living
inEdmonton.
Tunes like Oliver Square
offer a guided tour of the
city’s nightlife, while the
video for Black Hand features a diorama of E-town’s
downtown core.
While he’s glad of the
fanfare, Pemberton says
Cadence Weapon will have OOKFEST hoppin’.
Yellowcard is amoung the big acts at the annual party.
he’s not especially surprised
rhymes about Edmonton go
down so well in places like
Brantford and beyond.
“I feel like my audience
is coming from everywhere.
Anyone who’s just interested in something different
seems to be interested in
what I’m doing. People are
not interested in hearing the
same old sh--,” he reasons.
“I feel like a lot of music is
regionally specific and that’s
what attracts people to it. If
you’re a dude from Omaha,
then you want to hear what
it’s like in other places.
That’s why I like stuff like
the Streets (U.K. hip-hop
artist Mike Skinner) or any
rap from New York – there’s
a real sense of regionalism
there and I really appreciate
hearing that.
“Obviously, there are
more underground hip-hop
types who are immediately
attracted to it and indie kids,
just by virtue of what the
beats sound like. But there
are a lot of people who you
wouldn’t normally expect to
listen to rap that are listening to it.”
Pemberton says he’s
already hard at work on a
follow-up album and given
the rather rudimentary way
he crafted it, using very
basic production programs,
he’s confident it will be technically superior to the first.
It’s also going to remain a
made-in-Edmonton affair.
With his success, he says
most people logically assume he’d head for greener
pastures, music centres like
Toronto, L.A. or New York.
But he says if it ain’t broke
(and this province is far
from broke), don’t fix it.
“I feel pretty good about doing hip hop in Edmonton,”
he says.

don’t involve computers,
electronics, or any high tech
(including car, other engines). A
relationship is coming to one of
its annual “strained phase” – it
might pass, or it might cause
a work or home adjustment.
In two years, these “strained
phases” will disappear.
Meanwhile, your romantic
courage is rising!
Cancer June 21-July 22
Short trips, communications,
paperwork, reports, details,
errands, curiosity, casual
friends and siblings fill this
week. People like you now!
You could start a casual,
friendly love affair, but you
might later wonder why you
“tied yourself down.” Friction
or tension enters your home
until late October. DON’T
set up housekeeping with a
“casual lover.” Something
more real will arrive around
November. Turn that “home
energy” to renovations, repairs,
landscaping, construction,
etc. You’re popular Sunday
to Tuesday. Rest, withdraw
Tuesday eve to Thursday.
You’re magnetic, effective
Friday/Saturday! Work
changes loom.
Leo July 23-Aug. 22
Chase money, but do nothing
unethical for it, and drop any
financial goal that has you
jumping through too many
hoops. (More than one is too
many.) Now through 2007,
“buy and hold” on the stock
market; don’t be a “trader.”
Short trips, communications,

details, paperwork and casual
meetings proliferate – by
October these will yield a nice
little bit of luck for you, so
charge ahead! Be ambitious
(not profligate) Sunday eve
to Tuesday noon. Friends,
popularity and happiness visit
mid-week! But retire to solve
a romantic/creative puzzle
Friday/Saturday.
Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22
Your energy, charisma and
effectiveness continue high.
Start significant projects, seek
favors; be there “in person.”
Others find you charming all
September; you’ll attract love,
or love’s opening gambit.
Respond – it will benefit you, in
more ways than are apparent.
Until late October, money
will flow swiftly to you – and
through you, unless you save.
Reject unnecessary purchases.
Sunday noon to Tuesday
afternoon brings wisdom, fine
cultural affairs, higher learning,
legal and travel opportunities.
(Sunday and Tuesday are
best). Be ambitious midweek. Your popularity spikes
Friday/Saturday, but you sense
“deeper needs.” Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22
Continue to lie low, rest,
withdraw from the bustling
world – contemplate and
plan. Visit your soul, see a
counselor, meditate, attend
church, be charitable, and deal
with red tape in business and
government. Despite your
lowered energy, your mind
is active and sharp (through
October 1) and your personal,
sexual magnetism is rising
(through October 23). That
magnetism will serve you
better when your birthday
period starts (Sept. 22 onward)
– for now, it gives you courage
and will power, two good
attributes to use in ambitions,
security quests, and research.
Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21
Social delights, popularity,
flirtations, light romance,
optimistic plans for the future
– these fill September, but take
what comes without chasing
it. Enjoy without building
upon what happens. Work,
duties, and involvements with
tools (including cars) will
intensify through late October.
Be “double” safety-conscious.
You’ll be dealing with red
tape, large organizations,
and you might be entrusted
with a “secret mission.” Make
sure collusion isn’t part of the
deal – honesty and integrity
maintain your long-term value
in the world. Relationships
excite Sunday to Tuesday
(careful Monday). Mysteries
intrigue mid-week!
Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21
Relations with higher-ups
and VIPs, ambition, prestige
and career directions receive
two mildly lucky little boosts
in September, but don’t
chase nor build upon them
– just accept your good luck.
(Chasing would cause them
The Nugget
to crumple or fade.) Until late
October, you’ll grow more
social, hopeful and flirtatious.
This starts with a one-on-one
situation, with a romantic or
partnering intent, but it soon
spreads to encompass a whole
group. (E.g., you could start a
love affair, and be drawn into
his/her group of friends.) Life’s
exciting, uplifting – more so,
later! Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19
Legal, educational, travel,
cultural, love, publishing,
advertising and statistical
involvements flow easily and
with mild luck all September,
but don’t try to deepen your
position in these – if anything,
turn toward the “small.” E.g.,
in advertising, excuse yourself
from the concept; instead,
handle procurement, copy,
visuals, etc. Through October,
you’ll grow more determined,
assertive and impetuous in
career, prestige situations
and dealings with VIPs. Be
diplomatic – “showdowns”
could spell “endings!”
Romantic, creative, pleasure
urges arrive Sunday (great
night!) to Tuesday. Tackle
chores mid-week. Relationships
are “all or nothing” Friday/
Saturday.
Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 18
Mild luck lifts your financial,
investment, sexual, intimate,
research, health and
investigative interests – accept
this luck without trying to
build upon it. Chasing it,
attempting to deepen your
rewards, could cause them
to evaporate – or could
nudge you in a subtly wrong
direction for future efforts. If
in doubt, take the money (or
the sweet interlude) and let the
“promise” go! Through late
October, avoid legal hassles.
You’ll be determined, assertive
and effective in higher learning,
far travel, cultural venues,
advertising/publishing…and
love. Home’s sweet Sunday.
Romance, creativity midweek! Pisces Feb. 19-March 20
Relationships prove pleasant,
affectionate. You might be
offered love, or seek it. Good,
but stop short of any lifelong
commitments. Be wary, also,
in contract negotiations,
relocation, litigation, and public
dealings – it’s not that others
are acting in bad faith, but that
conditions might be adverse
“down the road.” The antidote:
a healthy independence.
Now to late October, secrets,
mysteries, investment urges,
financial involvements, sexual
and intimate commitments
and consequences intensify.
You’ll be courageous, even
aggressive. That’s okay – stay
honest! A sudden attraction,
and a career challenge,

OK ya’ll we know Grapevines is probably the most popular feature in the Nugget. But
we need some damn submissions. You have a crush on someone on campus? Send
them an anonymous message. Wanna mouth off about something bugging you? Send
it our way. We’re free and easy on this feature but we won’t put up with submissions
that are threatening or racist. Other than that, go for the gusto. Send your e-mail to nuggetgrapevines@hotmail.com and we’ll publish a selection of the best ones every week.

Calling all Clubs!
Do you have an idea for a club on campus? How about a “Please,
someone help me navigate my new cell phone (all 3,000 functions)”
Club or something a little less ulcer-inducing like, oh, say, a Bird
Watching Club? Whatever your idea for a club, we can help you get it
started and we’ll also help you keep it going. All clubs must be NAITSA sanctioned in order to be recognized as a club at NAIT. So call Rita
right away at 471-8960 or email me at ritac@nait.ca and we’ll discuss
the tools you’ll need for your club to run smoothly and successfully.
