Shouldn’t the pasuk simply say that Avraham eulogized Sarah? The Ramban explains that “coming” to do a certain action refers to a preliminary step in the process. Before Avraham actually eulogized Sarah, he “awakened”or inspired himself and then started the mitzvah. The use of the active verb “came”implies that Avraham consciously worked on his emotions and not that he was passively inspired by the events acting upon him. Avraham was the greatest kiruv worker of his time, probably of all time, and was presumably a most eloquent orator, with the skill and experience to convey his thoughts and feelings effectively. As the paragon of chesed, he certainly possessed the ability to summon all of his formidable talents to perform the ultimate kindness –the chesed shel emet –of a fitting final tribute to his beloved wife Sarah. His marriage to Sarah, lasting more than 85 years, was the epitome of shalom bayit, of mutual love and respect. Avraham, with his greatness of spirit and intellect, combined with the love he had for Sarah, surely noticed and appreciated her exceptional qualities and, without any additional inspiration, would have delivered the most moving, tear-filled hesped we can imagine, with words surging straight from his heart. Why, then, should Avraham have to prepare himself emotionally to give this eulogy? What could this “awakening” of his feelings accomplish beyond all that he already felt for the irreplaceable loss of his wife? Apparently, any mitzvah or positive action can be enhanced and improved by taking time to prepare oneself beforehand. One should not begin a mitzvah suddenly, rather he should ready himself and patiently prepare his heart. Then he should reflect on what he is going to do and before Whom he is going to do it. By entering into this thought process, it will become easy for him to throw off all ulterior motives and implant in his heart the true intention that Hashem desires. This advice is for any Jew about to perform any mitzvah. From Avraham’s example we learn that even the greatest, most talented and supremely motivated giant of a person will fulfill a mitzvah on an even higher level if he takes the time to prepare and inspire himself beforehand. By telling us about this detail, the Torah is also teaching us that we are expected to apply this effort to upgrade our own performance of any mitzvah. How much time do we invest in our mitzvot? While this concept is a universal one, tefilah is a good example of a mitzvah that needs preparation, both externally –as in how we dress –and internally –as in our motivations and thoughts. May we appreciate the importance and privilege of serving Hashem and prepare ourselves properly with inspiration that will polish all our mitzvot into shining jewels for Hashem. From the Desk of Mr. Joel Weisblum, YDH Executive Director This past Sunday, Yeshiva Derech HaTorah was privileged to hold a Ktivat HaOtiot for the Sefer Torah that we are writing L’Iluy Nishmat Dr. Jeffrey Ben-Zvi A”H. We once again would like to thank the Sendzichew and Stevens families for hosting this event. If was beautiful to watch members of the YDH family come to write a letter in the Sefer Torah. Rebbeim, teachers, staff, parents and children all came to participate in this most meaningful project and to be mekayem the mitzvah of writing a Sefer Torah, the 613th mitzvah given to us. For those of you who were able to join us, we thank you for participating. For those of you who could not attend, it doesn’t mean you have lost the opportunity to participate. There is still time, and many sponsorship opportunities are still available. Please contact the financial office to join us in this project. You will be so glad that you did. From Mrs. Reminick, 3rd Grade General Studies The 3rd Grade has accomplished a great deal of learning in the first few months of General Studies. In reading, we have studied humorous fiction, fantasy, realistic fiction, historical fiction, biography, poetry, narrative nonfiction, fairy tale, and informational texts. We have focused on story structure, drawing conclusions, understanding characters, compare and contrast, cause and effect, sequence of events, and author’ s purpose. The boys’reading has been leveled, and they are reading books independently from our leveled classroom and school libraries. Boys have already begun submitting Passport To Reading entries on fiction and informational texts. Each week, we also supplement our reading with vocabulary, phonics, penmanship, spelling, and grammar. Each boy has written a descriptive writing, a dialogue, a personal narrative writing, and opinion writing. Their work is displayed on our hallway bulletin board and then placed into our writing portfolios. In science, we have learned about engineering (designing and building bridges), mammals, and nocturnal animals such as bats. In social studies, we have learned about schoolhouses, trials and juries, charity and community work, and map skills. We supplement science and math with Time For Kids weekly periodicals. Finally, in math, we are studying graphs and multiplication using common core standards and H.O.T. (high order thinking). The score was kept close against a league powerhouse. Our guys are really looking forward to getting another shot at this team when they meet us in the playoffs. The Gemara in says three people asked for things improperly, yet Hashem answered two of them properly. One of them was Eliezer - the servant of Avraham Avinu. When he said “the girl of whom I ask for a drink will offer my camels also to drink, is worthy of Yitzchak.” The girl could have been lame or blind, but Hashem sent Rivkah. Why did Eliezer ask improperly? The brings down that Eliezer was biased because he wanted his daughter to marry Yitzchak. He therefore felt if he goes through the normal process this would blind him to think his daughter is better. He therefore left it totally up to Hashem, therefore Hashem answered him properly and sent Rivkah. We have to recognize that while we have to put proper effort into all we do, at the end of the day everything is in the hands of Hashem!
