PRESSURES AND OVERPRESSURE IN THE SUBSURFACE
In collaboration with PRESSURES AND OVERPRESSURE IN THE SUBSURFACE 3 – 5 November 2014 | Bali | Indonesia 12 – 14 November 2014 | Bangkok | Thailand 17 – 19 November 2014 | Ho Chi Minh City | Vietnam www.petroEDGEasia.net PRESSURES AND OVERPRESSURE IN THE SUBSURFACE 3 – 5 November 2014 | Bali * 12 – 14 November 2014 | Bangkok * 17 – 19 November 2014 | Ho Chi Minh Course objectives The principal objective of the course is to teach participants how pressure data relate to the safe and efficient exploration and exploitation of petroleum reservoirs. Overpressure is experienced in most sedimentary basins where reservoirs are associated with fine-grained lithologies (such as shales), occurring at depths of 2.0km or greater below sea-bed. Recent advances in the understanding of overpressure, in particular the magnitude of overpressure resulting from each of the main mechanisms under realistic basin conditions, give improved confidence in estimating pore pressures. The course is presented as a combination of Powerpoint based lectures and practical exercises. By the end of this 3 day course, delegates will be able to: Be familiar with industry standard methods for establishing hydrostatic, lithostatic, fracture gradients and displaying pressure data. Understand the origins of formation pressure data and how these data can be used to interpret fluid composition and fluid contacts. Be familiar with the main mechanisms which lead to overpressure and to differentiate between primary and secondary mechanisms. Understand which data types can be used to predict pressures in shale dominated sequences using industry standard techniques, and the limitations of these techniques. Be aware of the effects of overpressure on the hydrocarbon system including, lateral transfer, lateral drainage, hydrodynamics, seal integrity, reservoir quality, hydrocarbon migration and hydrocarbon maturation. Who should attend? This training course is designed for geologists, geophysicists, petrophysicists and reservoir/drilling engineers with an interest in overpressure and high-pressure reservoirs, i.e. anyone who wants to understand over-pressure and to know about the tools to predict it ahead of the bit. A familiarity with oilfield practices will be an advantage. 3 Day Course Agenda FUNDAMENTALS OF PRESSURE - Definitions & Units Hydrostatic pressures & gradients Lithostatic pressures & gradients Fracture pressure & gradients Sources & types of pressure data Subsurface pressure analysis Pressure-depth plots Fluid pressure gradients & fluid contacts MECHANISMS FOR GENERATING OVERPRESSURE - OVERPRESSURE PREDICTION - Prediction methods Normal Compaction Trend analysis Eaton’s Ratio method Equivalent Depth method Relating velocity & effective stress Bowers method Pressure prediction from seismic velocities Drilling responses to overpressure Basin modelling approach Compaction disequilibrium A “shared overburden” Volume expansion mechanisms Load Transfer Magnitude from main mechanisms Fluid movement Lateral Drainage Lateral Transfer OVERPRESSURE & THE PETROLEUM SYSTEM - Fractures, faults & Mohr circles Seal capacity & Seal Breach Reservoir quality Migration Maturation Compartments and pressure cells Hydrodynamics and tilted hydrocarbon-water contacts Sessions commence at 9am on all days, with short intervals at 10.30am and 3.30pm respectively with light refreshment. He is responsible to provide technical and business leadership in the field of geopressure, to mentor and manage the Asia Pacific regional Geopressure staff, to lead the team in achieving high quality technical support and lead project management to exceed client’s objectives and expectations, to provide mentoring and training as required and to represent company in the external meetings and client communication. Jakob is a strong industry professional with training in sedimentology and facies modelling, including interpretation of sedimentary facies from cores, well logs and seismic data. Previously trained on submarine fan plays offshore Nile Delta and extensive work experience in Middle Jurassic, Mid-Norway, Cretaceous of Danish North Sea, Eocene, Miocene Gulf of Suez, Cretaceous Western Desert of Egypt, and the Triassic in Syria and Miocene of the Nile Delta. He has an MSC in Sedimentology/Geology from the University of Copenhagen Denmark. His Master’s thesis was undertaken in collaboration with STATOIL Norway and focussed on the sedimentation and diagenesis of the Middle Jurassic Garn Formation. Stephen is responsible for all technical aspects of Ikon GeoPressure globally. He oversees the entire lifecycle of pressure prediction projects and regional pressure studies from concept to completion. He is passionate about pore pressure prediction and as such publishes papers and regularly presents at international conferences. Technically he leads and mentors the GeoPressure team. Jakob has 10 years working experience as a geologist in Denmark, UK, Egypt and Malaysia (KL) and has focussed on integrating a variety of data types and other information into a regional interpretation of the subsurface. He has extensive experience in creating pressure databases, producing regional pressure distribution maps, analysing hydrodynamic systems, seal-breach risking studies, fracture pressure algorithms, well plans and log-based pressure prediction (E.g. Equivalent Depth Method, Eaton and Bowers) as well as real-time well monitoring. After graduating from Leeds University with a BSc in Geological Sciences he started his career working on exploration assignments for Unocal and BP/Amoco before returning to university to undertake an MSc. in Sedimentology at Reading University. His dissertation was the study of the sedimentology and diagenesis of the reservoir interval, Old Red Sandstone Group, Well 206 8-7, Clair Field, offshore Shetland. Following this he worked for service companies on sedimentology/diagenesis in areas such as UKCS including the Atlantic Margin and the Middle East before specialising in areas such as pore pressure and fault seal. Don has more than 17 years of industry experience in several countries with various roles. He has wide range of experience in pore pressure and wellbore stability modeling using petrophysical, drilling and geophysical data along with extensive wellsite experience throughout many different geological environments such as deepwater, extended reach drilling, HTHP and in complex lithologies. He was successfully involved in some of record breaking projects, such as Poseidon (the deepest well in Gulf of Mexico, 2001) and Sakhalin-1 Chayvo (the longest well in the world, 2008). Enhancing this experience, Don is a certified OASIS Engineer in Pressure Management and Performance Drilling. Don graduated his Bachelor of Science in Geology in 1994 from Wichita State University, Wichita, Kansas, USA and continued to undertake a Master of Science degree in Geology from the same university. He graduated his MS in 1997. He was a recipient of various scholarships. Stephen has over 20 years of experience and his background as a petroleum geologist has lead him to work with many types of oilfield data, particularly in the areas of reservoir quality, structural geology with particular reference to geomechanics, fault seal and pore pressure. Since joining Ikon Geopressure in 2010, Jakob has worked on pore pressure projects from the Central North Sea, Niger Delta/offshore West African Margin and extensively in the SE Asia region including Australia, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia/Borneo. The projects involved well plans; seal breach studies and column height assessments, hydrodynamic studies and regional pressure studies.
