WHO IS AN ENTREPRENEUR?

The process of starting something new may be a
business or an organization is entrepreneurship. It has been
extended from its origin in the business and includes social and
political activities. An entrepreneur begins with ideas. These ideas
are then developed into models. These models further use all the
available resources to implement the idea. An entrepreneur is one
who takes risks, takes advantage of the market opportunities and
develops strategies to make good use of the available resources
or innovate. Team-building, leadership and management are the
essential
qualities
of
an
entrepreneur.
The
idea
that
entrepreneurship leads towards economic growth is still debated
by the economists.

In a year, there are thousands of Business Plan Competitions,
happening all over the world. That means so many different ideas.
But still we don’t see all these being implemented.
So what is wrong??? Rational, linear and perspective approaches
to new ventures or initiatives limit the possibilities for innovation.

Your time is worth much more
than just standing in queues for
something as tedious as getting a

Incremental ideas would be the result.
Creativity is an ability to produce something new through
imaginative skill. It could be a different solution to an existing
problem, new device, new artistic form, artifact or a contribution.
Applying a creative approach to entrepreneurship means

of proper marketing on a sound mind. The long lasting impressions
created on us for a particular product is due to the proper marketing
done by the company.
On theoretical basis, it is the process of communicating the
value of a product to customers, for the purpose of selling that
product. But if you take any individual’s opinion who has ever been
part of a marketing team for a company, product or evenan event;
he/she shall definitely state that marketing is the soul of the show
and not limited to the definition above.
The purpose of having a separate marketing team in every company
is to make the user or customer urge for more. Haven’t you

FABER CASTELL: PENCILING IN A SURPLUS
Faber-Castell is the largest maker of wood-encased pencils in the world and also
makes a broad range of pens, crayons, art and drawing supplies as well as accessories
like erasers and sharpeners.
It recently celebrated 250 years of its foundation and has seen through eight
generations in that span of time. 70-year-old Count Anton Wolfgang von Faber Castell,
Chairman, Faber Castell, says that the most significant growth came to his company in
the fourth generation. The company was started in 1761 by Kaspar Faber, seven
generations before him.
Fourth generation head of the company, Baron Lothar von Faber, had registered the
brand name and undertook a thorough modernization of the family business.
YOU WILL ENCOUNTER PEAKS AND VALLEYS. BUT STICK TO IT, NEVER LET FAMILY
BUSINESS FRAGMENT.
Baron Lothar took over the business from his father, his brothers wanted to begin
separate pencil businesses. Eventually, however, Baron Lothar was able to bring them
into the family business and designate specific segments of the business to each. While
one of his brothers was sent off to set up the subsidiary of the company in the U.S, his
other brother took care of manufacturing activities of the company.

most vulnerable point of existence—the passing of the
baton from one generation to the other. Lack of readiness
and discord at this time may result in major value erosion.
“You need to have a structure, you need to ensure that one
person in the family can make the decisions or influence
decision making significantly. If you cannot ensure that and
if the members of the family keep fighting on decisionmaking issues, then you can’t make it this far,” he claims.
“Good managers and a portion of luck,” he says, is what’s
needed to make a family business work. You cannot expect
members of the family to hold all key managerial positions.
“You have to compromise with that. If you do depend on
family members to hold all key management positions,
eventually you will have to compromise on quality
somewhere. Family members should only be taken into the
business on the grounds of capability,” says Count Anton.
Having worked as an intern at Faber Castell, and as an
investment banker, Count Anton had to prove his
capabilities before taking over from his father. His son, he
says, works for a well-known management consulting firm.
“You should never force your children into the company,”
he advises. The only thing that stays consistent through the
generations are the values and focus on quality from the
manufacturing point of view.
The ‘entrepreneurial’ passion is a key constituent of their
success. It is embodied in not only the leaders and family
members but also in a section of employees—it is one of
the key qualities that FOB leaders seek out and reward in
their employees.

Few people have the determination to stick with their ideas

about mind blowing innovation and change the world!
Being an entrepreneur is easily one of the coolest and most
satisfying jobs available and here are a few reasons why.
Chase your dreams!
Entrepreneurs are not weighed down by other people’s
ideals, they don’t have to answer to anyone else and most
importantly they get to follow their ambitions and watch
it become a reality before their very eyes! An example of
this is Neal Sales-Griffin and Mike McGee, founders of
Starter School. In the spring of 2011, two graduates of
Northwestern University, Sales-Griffin and McGee were
given the choice of participating in the president’s reelection campaign. They, however, decided to pursue
their start-up idea and established the entrepreneurial
school, Starter School. It is a school that teaches its
students how to build software and set up companies.

Ethics and integrity- the key to being a successful and
respected entrepreneur! Successful, sustainable business
persons maintain the highest standards of integrity
because if they cannot prove themselves to be credible,
they’ll be out of business. Jack Welch, retired CEO and
chairman of General Electric, is credited with turning GE
into the corporate giant is it today. He writes,
in his memoir, that the guiding force behind all his
strategic decisions across GE’s portfolio was integrity.
“Integrity was our No. 1 value,” he wrote. “We never had
a corporate meeting where I didn’t emphasize integrity in
my closing remarks.”
Integrity is a lot more than just upholding an ethical code.
It involves staying true to who you are, despite the odds!

FLEA MARKET REPORT
SPARSH
Dating back to almost as early as when men wore
leopard skins and women walked around with coconut
shells, Flea Markets have been along for quite some time
(and no, they never sold fleas- they seemed to attract quite
a few, though). What started off as a platform for farmers
to barter (and perhaps, scam) apples to satisfy their
peasants’ ceaseless demands, the flea market has now
evolved into a medium for sustaining culture, art and food
(all while letting you buy that really cute pair of pants at less
than half the rate of your average mall price- a total steal,
for sure). They’ve almost turned into a sort of fairy-tale get
away from the quotidian grey world that we seem to have
grown so tired of- a plethora of colour, music and festivallike joy to rescue you from air-conditioned caves filled with
overpriced scarves and undercooked crusts.
The Entrepreneurship Development of BMSCE presented
its own fairytale getaway for fashion enthusiasts and food
zealots on the 6th and 7th of September- a sort of spin-off
to Phase Shift: a national tech symposium that the college
hosted. The EDC of BMSCE aims to inculcate the spirit of
entrepreneurship to its impressionable members and a flea
market was revealed to be the perfect rostrum.
The Market saw people from variegated backgrounds
coming in to showcase their talents- be it cooking, looming,
nail-art or even just a good eye for style.
Housewives with hermetic abilities got their long overdue
limelight as they opened up stalls that everyone seemed
to love. Pooja, a singer by profession, proved that music
wasn’t the only thing she could create. At Pooja Creations,
one found baskets and baskets of beautiful jewelryethereal masterpieces that could have an accessory lover

Sparsh: A helping touch to the needy is
setup by Akshay J Bhattad, a student of
3rd semester CSE at R.V.College of
Engineering. Sparsh is an organisation
which initiates the programme of
Collecting and donating the basic goods
for underprivileged children. The main
motive at Sparsh revolves around the
phrase that ‘every drop makes an ocean’,
similarly little efforts by every single
person of the society can help the poor
and needy.
If every person gives his little
contribution by donating a few basic
goods like clothes, books, etc, then it
could lead to a great help when masses
come down for it.. Sparsh is associated
with more than 100 interns from 24
different cities across the country. These
interns contributed for a change in the
society. Unlike other people who feel pity
for poor children and think that someone
will come to rescue them, these interns
went ahead and themselves took the
lead and helped the needy.
/sparshthehelp
rummaging through the crates for hours, fighting an
uncontrollable urge to buy the whole stall.
THE SAS PROJECT
Students, too, challenged the unjust labels society often
imposes upon them by unveiling their myriad set of
skills. BMSCE’s own “Blancora Prints” has caught more
than just the college by surprise- and is showing great
potential in being the next start-up to watch out for. For
them, the Flea Market was just the extra boost they
needed. It was not just about the pretty clothes and the
mouth-watering dishes- the Flea Market also unearthed
many shrouded flairs. NiyanthVidi, a 2nd year
Information Science student wooed the shoppers with
his infamous beat boxing. Moreover, the EDC’s Events
Team stunned the crowd with their music. Karaoke
stalls- where customers could take a break from their
intense shopping and sing along to their favourite tunes,
were also extant.
“The coordination amongst the members was
marvelous- it was an excellent effort, indeed” marvels
“KapadaBazaar”’sPreksha. The MCC girls from
“Oppulencemate”, a one-stop solution for anything
ranging from phone covers to khakras, exclaimed that
the arrangement and organization was unbelievably
systematic.
The Flea Market was, undoubtedly, a brilliant success. It
left cynics gaping with awe- putting all “those-kidsdon’t-do-much” stereotypes to shame. It proved that we
are as capable of sweating it out at work as on the
dance floor, that we have it in us to care about much
more than mere celebrity gossip. Surely, the Party
Generation has more to offer than just, well, parties- and
this EDC has ascertained this by showing us all what it
means to be relevant and ambitious.
