Economic briefings project
Guidelines for mentors
The Economics Department is running a scheme to give all 1st year students an empirical
awareness of macroeconomic data and the ability to understand how to interpret, present
and comment on the latest economic releases from countries around the world.
First year students have been put in groups of 5, were assigned a country and a data series
for that country. For that series they are required to produce a briefing every month, for 12
months, as well as a quarterly briefing for the GDP release for the assigned country.
Each group has been assigned three mentors (two second years and one third year) to
provide advice and guidance. In order to make the group work easier, each member of your
group was given access to a OneDrive folder named after your mentee groups’ number.
The responsibility of the mentors is as follows:
-
-
-
-
Getting in touch with the groups you are responsible for to let them know you are
their mentors and available to help them towards their briefings, by providing advice
and guidance and read over the material before submission.
Check for the release calendar of the series the groups you are mentoring were
assigned to. Keep note of these dates as you are required to check for their
submission.
Each group is required to submit the briefings one week after the release of series,
check that the groups you are responsible for have submitted their work, and if they
have not, let Laura Sochat (L.sochat@Warwick.ac.uk) know by email.
Check that the format of the title of submission is right.
As one of these mentors, your responsibility is to guide the students towards producing
better, more insightful briefings. You should not write the briefings for them. However, you
might want to look at their work in progress and dataset to familiarise yourself with the
series.
You have been given access to the OneDrive folders to ensure you can access the material
from anywhere at any time as the briefings also have to be produced during holidays
(including summer).
For submission of the briefings, the groups of first year students are required to submit each
month a PDF file in the final folder within their OneDrive folders. The file should be named
such as:
-
groupename_country_series_month, for the monthly series.
groupname_country_GDP_quarter, for the quarterly GDP series.
Therefore if your group is group 150 and were assigned France CPI, for the November
briefing, you would have to submit a file into the final folder named
Groupe150_France_CPI_November.
Please remember to check the forum on HowCloud as questions are being asked on there
and answers provided by staff. Guidance from staff is also included on the forum, which will
be helpful in improving the advice and guidance you will provide to your mentee groups.
