hosted by
Danube Soya – Association for the Promotion of European Protein Soya Production
Danube Soya provides added value for the European agriculture industry. In this workshop the main principle and activities of Danube Soya, as well as the general conditions of international soya cultivation and possibilities for labelling of quality products,
will be introduced.
Version Oct. 31, 2014
(subject to changes)
6| Danube Region Business Forum 2014 | November 6/7 2014 | Austrian Federal Economic Chamber
Part I: The International Soya Market and its Future. Chances for the Danube Region
The European Union seeks to establish a European Protein Strategy. Danube Soya is
an essential part of this, as it promotes European soya cultivation, labelling and numerous projects for soya with its quality label. Farmers from the Danube Region in particular are going to benefit from the certification. Above all the project provides chances
for the entire value-added chain in the Danube Region. Last but not least, consumers
benefit from the reliable labelling of products in the vegetable and the meat product
segment.
Ursula Bittner, Danube Soya
Dragos Dima, Danube Soya
Ernst Gauhs, Raiffeisen Ware Austria
Part II
GMO-free Labelling in Europe
Individual differences in the EU Member states, the use of rapid tests for diagnostic
solutions for the food and feed industry and the quality management of brand products
provided by an oil mill. Furthermore innovations in soya processing in the areas of food
and feed will be presented.

A3: 16.30 – 17.30
Discussion
The podium discussion serves as an open discussion and as an opportunity to answer
various questions. Speakers from the first two parts will participate in this session as
well.
A4: 14.00 – 15.00 Challenges for the Food Processing Industry
In answer to the demands of the concentrated retail store chains, the food processing
sector has been changing its product portfolio continuously. The ever growing distance
between the producers and consumers in time and in location, creates new challenges
for the market players. The new technological methods that the food processing industry is applying in order to face these challenges have been criticized heavily by various
NGOs and the media. Various ingredients used in food products nowadays are blamed
by these organizations for causing a series of health problems. Some governments
have already taken steps in this direction (fat tax, sugar tax, bans of some products
etc.).
What is the response of the industry to this sensitive issue? Is there a proper answer
for the challenges we are facing?

C SOURCING FOR THE FOOD PROCESSING INDUSTRY
C1: 10. 15 – 11.15 Subcontracting in the Food Processing Industry
Subcontracting in the Danube Region and CEI countries is an important issue. It can
give access to markets usually closed for imports. Using the example of Belarus
subcontracting can give easier access to the Euro-Asian Economic Zone.
• Legal and customs aspect of processing in Belarus
• Belarus as a processing and production site within customs union
• Legal/tax incentives and commercial matters for production in Belarus

C4: 10.45 – 11.15 Sourcing in Algeria
Nowadays Algeria was the main grain supplier of the Roman Empire and still is an
important producer of agricultural products. Algerian raw materials and semin-finished
products are of highest qualities. As most products Algeria is famous for are not produced in den Danube Region sourcing from there could be an interesting issue.

Since the 1960s, the European Union has significantly harmonised its veterinary legislation creating and enacting over 15.000 regulation, directives and decisions, following
the new hygiene rules, HACCP standards, etc. This large amount of legal acts is impossible to handle in daily work especially when putting the focus on QM systems. This
lecture will give you a brief overview of the problems and solutions in complying with
safeguard measures, import restrictions, health protection and disease control.
