Nov. 11 - St. Martin of Tours, Bishop
(patron saint of horses and soldiers)
St. Martin, called “the glory of Gaul,” was born about the year 316
of pagan parents in Sabaria, Upper Pannonia, a province comprising
northern Yugoslavia and western Hungary. His father was an officer
in the Roman army who had risen from the ranks. While Martin was
still a child, his father was transferred to a new station in Pavia, north
Italy. Here the boy learned of Christianity, felt drawn to it, and became
a catechumen. As the son of a veteran, at the age of fifteen he was
required to begin service in the army. Though never shirking his
military duty, he is said to have lived more like a monk than a soldier.

(patron saint of Ukraine)
Josaphat is one of those figures in history caught in a web of
controversy where even good people find it hard to keep their heads.
He was caught in a battle between Catholic and Orthodox, Latin and
Byzantine, and found himself criticized and opposed on every side: by
the Orthodox for being Catholic and by the Latins for being Byzantine.
He held firmly to Catholic unity against the Orthodox and just as firmly
to Byzantine rights against the Latins. At that period of history, it was a
no-win situation, and he is the great martyr to the cause of unity.

Nov. 13 - St. Frances Xavier Cabrini, Virgin
(patron saint of immigrants)
As saint of our own time and as the first United States citizen to be
elevated to sainthood, Mother Cabrini has a double claim on our
interest. Foundress of the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart
and pioneer worker for the welfare of dispersed Italian nationals,
this diminutive nun was responsible for the establishment of nearly
seventy orphanages, schools, and hospitals, scattered over eight
countries in Europe, North, South, and Central America. Still living are
pupils, colleagues, and friends who remember Mother Cabrini vividly;
her spirit continues to inspire the nuns who received their training at
her hands. Since the record remains fresh in memory, and since the
saint’s letters and diaries have been carefully preserved, we have more
authentic information about her, especially of the formative years, than
we have concerning any other saint.

Catholic Guilt
Popular culture often refers negatively to “Catholic guilt,” implying that
Catholics are weighed down by an unfortunate awareness of having done
wrong. Sincerely acknowledge true guilt is the first step toward forgiveness.

Why do Catholics offer Masses for the dead?
Judas Maccabee ordered prayers and sacrifices for Jewish soldiers who
died in sin (2 Maccabees 12:38-46). St. Paul prayed for Onesiphorus after
his death (2Timothy 1:18).
Catholics believe that prayers and sacrifices benefit the dead.
When we die in God’s friendship we eventually go to Heaven, but if we
haven’t properly atoned for certain sins we have to be purified in Purgatory
first. We pray for the souls in Purgatory to help them pass through faster
than they would otherwise.

Why does God make us suffer
When the disciples asked Jesus whose sin resulted in a particular man
being born blind, Jesus replied, “Neither he nor his parents sinned; it is so
that the works of God might be made visible through him” (John 9:2-3). God
doesn’t send it, but he uses our suffering to draw us to him.
Suffering comes from living in a world made imperfect by sin. Jesus
points out that God doesn’t want our needless suffering and will help us
through it. “Which one of you would hand his son a stone when he asks
for a loaf of bread, or a snake when he asks for a fish? If you then, who
are wicked, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more
will your heavenly Father give good things to those who ask him” (Matthew
7:9-11)? And he leaves in his wake a trail of discarded crutches, bandages,
and bonds to prove it.

DEDICATION OF THE LATERAN BASILICA

I made a retreat on the shores of Massachusetts not long ago.
The shore was rocky, with slabs of granite meeting the ocean. The air
was fragrant with flowers and foliage in late August. Birds, bees, and
crickets went about their daily business. Surely God is here, I thought as
I immersed myself in nature, silence, and prayer. I took a piece of granite
from the shore to remind myself of my retreat.
It might seem odd to have a feast day for a church, but our readings
today show us that marking God’s presence is a time-honored tradition.
When Jacob dreamed of ladders and angels, he took it as a sign of
God’s presence and built an altar in the place he’d slept.
When Zacchaeus heard Jesus call his name, he climbed down from
the tree to welcome Jesus into his home and was moved then and there
to give back anything he owed and more.
When we finally recognize the presence of God, we often take special
note of the moment with some sign. The sign can be small, like my rock.
But in other times, people have built extraordinary places of worship,
painted luminous pictures, or sculpted statues of amazing grace.
The Basilica of St. John Lateran, the principal cathedral of Rome (also
known as the pope’s cathedral) and the baptismal Church of ancient
Rome, is a wonderful example of such a sign. Our focus today is not
on the building itself, but on what it represents - the union of the whole
people of God gathered with the pope in witness to the presence of God.

What is a basilica?
What’s the difference between a church, a cathedral, and a
basilica?
The word church originally did not mean a building. It was a term used
to designate the assembled believers. In the New Testament, church was
used to identify those who believed in Jesus Christ and followed his way.
Later the term took on its modern definition: a building in which Christian
believers gather for worship, especially to celebrate the Eucharist.
A cathedral is the bishop’s church and the chief church of a diocese
or archdiocese. The name takes its origin from cathedra, the “bishop’s
chair.” The bishops of old delivered their homilies from the bishop’s chair
in the cathedral.
A basilica is an early form of church building used for Christian
worship. This was especially the case in the western part of the Roman
Empire after the time of Constantine (fourth century).
Today, basilica is an honorary title given to certain churches by
the pope. Rome has four major basilicas: St. John Lateran (the pope’s
cathedral church, which we honor today), St. Peter’s at the Vatican, St.
Paul’s Outside the Walls, and St. Mary Major. In addition, a number of
churches in Rome and throughout the world are designated as minor
basilicas.
Whether we worship in the basilica of St. Peter’s in Rome or in a parish
church, we seek to draw closer to the Lord in our worship and prayers.

Heart Monday through Friday from 5:30pm to 7:30pm to assist
individuals and families:

The St. Joseph Health Care Trust assists individuals who are medically
uninsured/underinsured and who meet eligibility criterion. This includes
assistance with prescriptions, dental services, physician visits, and other

Immigration Consultations in Wichita Falls
This opportunity allows you to have an immigration consultation with
an immigration attorney or a Board of Immigration Appeals accredited
representative without traveling outside of Wichita Falls. Our professionals
will serve you via video from our main office in Fort Worth. You will be
speaking privately and confidentially with an authorized person qualified to
