Collect for the Second Sunday before Advent
Heavenly Father,
whose blessed Son was revealed
to destroy the works of the devil
and to make us the children of God
and heirs of eternal life:
grant that we, having this hope,
may purify ourselves even as he is pure;
that when he shall appear
in power and great glory
we may be made like him
in his eternal and glorious kingdom;
where he is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
Amen.
Today Adrian is presiding and preaching
at Begbroke and Yarnton

 The Revd Nathan Jarvis As many of you know, Nathan has very exciting news: he is
adopting two children shortly, and his adoption leave begins this week, and will last
between 9 and 12 months. Inevitably this will involve all the clergy in a great deal of
extra work, and we ask you to understand that. We are very blessed to have the help
of The Reverend Wendy Wale, who is Chaplain of Wadham College, and is living in
Yarnton. She is now licensed to our team as an Associate Priest. During Nathan’s leave
Clare will take a particular lead in pastoral care for Begbroke and Yarnton. Please do
be praying for Nathan, and for the boys, William and Adam, as they all prepare for
their new life together. We’ll let you know when family life has settled, and when
visitors will be welcome.
 Welcome to Sam It’s a great joy to welcome our new placement student, Samuel
Mann, who will be with us on Sundays in term time between now and Easter. Please
do make him very welcome – he is open to offers of Sunday lunch! You can email Sam
at sam.mann.1993@gmail.com
 Messiah Mollie Hance writes Arrangements for the Messiah "Sing In" at St Martin's
Bladon on the 6th December are now quite advanced and tickets are available, price
£10 each from me at 35 Brook Hill, Woodstock, OX20 1JE. Anyone who has ever
wished to sing this inspiring work is invited to come along and have a go. Our Rector
will be conducting it and the aim is for everyone to enjoy the event. If you would like
more information, email mollie.hance@tiscali.co.uk
 Advent Carol Service The season of Advent begins with a special candlelit Advent
Carol Service for all our churches which is going to be at Bladon on Advent Sunday,
November 30th at 6pm, with beautiful music sung by our choirs, and favourite Advent
hymns.
 Advent Compline by Candlelight On Wednesday evenings in Advent Adrian will
be leading the beautiful short service of Compline in St Mary Magdalene’s at 8.30pm –
why not make it your Advent discipline to give extra time to God in the busy weeks
before Christmas? The service, with a short time of meditation, will last around half an
hour.
 The Friends of Woodstock Church David Shepherd writes Another date for your diary
is Friday November 21st. Piano recital: return of Robert Stoodley and Linda Ang.
‘Piano a deux’.
 Christmas Market Carol Holmes writes On Saturday 29th November from 10am –
7pm, St Mary Magdalene’s will be the centre for a Christmas market, separately run
as part of the town’s ‘Night of a Thousand Candles’. We need 4 teams of 3 people to
serve coffee during the day: if you can help please fill in the sheet at the back of the
Church. We also need cakes/biscuits etc to serve with the coffee. Money raised will be
for Church funds. This could be a splendid day. Thank you.
 WORSHIP WORKS Roger Jones introducing his new book with a team from Christian
Music Ministries. A practical day for Christians of all denominations at Marston United
Reformed Church, OX3 0JB. November 29th, starting at 10am-4.30pm. Full details and a
booking form can be obtained from Mr M Douglas or via an e-mail request to
christianmusicfellowship@talktalk.net
 Ride and Stride Rosalind Gerring writes 17 members of Woodstock Church took part in
this year’s event, raising a total of £867.50 in sponsorship. Half of this money goes to
the Historic Churches Trust to help maintain churches in need of urgent repair, and
the remaining sum of £433.75 comes back to us for our general funds. Thank you to
all who took part, and to everyone who provided sponsorship.
