In accordance with Ohio High School Athletic Association rules, which states that November 14 is the first day high school and middle school teams across the state of Ohio can hold their first practice for the 2014 – 2015 season, the Knights will take full advantage and hold their first practices of the new season that day. Practice for the high school squad will begin at 3:00 p.m. and wrap up at 5:30 p.m. while middle school team begins practice at the same time but finish an hour earlier. Important early-season dates to remember for high school wrestlers are ‘Weight Certification/Hydration Test’ (Nov. 25) and the Season Preview/Scrimmage (11/29). The Knights varsity team opens the season December 6 at the ‘Bobcat Varsity Invitational Tournament’ at Cambridge High School in Cambridge, Ohio while the junior varsity squad sees their first action of the season at the ‘Meat and Potatoes Junior Varsity Invitational Tournament’ at Northmor High School near Galion, Ohio, also December 6. The West Holmes Middle School season opener is slated for December 17 when they battle Dover Middle School in a dual meet at West Holmes High School near Millersburg, Ohio. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ELEMENTARY ‘Attack Team’ Practices Underway Over 40 youth wrestlers filled the West Holmes Middle School wrestling room Thursday, October 30 as the first practice for the ultra-successful Holmes Area Wrestling Club – better known as the West Holmes elementary ‘Attack Team’ – began preparations for the 2014 – 2015 wrestling season. The ‘Attack Team’ begins their Ohio Youth Wrestling Association Mid-Ohio Division dual meet season December 14 with twin duals against Ashland and Smithville at Smithville High School in Smithville, Ohio. With an undefeated dual meet mark (8 – 0 overall) last season, the ‘Attack Team’ demolished their opponents with 869 team points scored while surrendering only 217 points. Since the 1995 – 1996 season, under the tutelage of 19th-year volunteer head coach Randy Sponseller, the ‘Attack Team’ sports a spectacular dual meet mark of 132 – 10 overall. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Open Mats Sundays Only Once Season Begins West Holmes High School wrestlers are reminded that ‘Open Mats’ will be scheduled for Sundays only, once the 2014 – 2015 season begins November 14. The wrestling room at the high school is still available Wednesday evening November 12 from 7:00 p.m to 8:00 p.m., and then Sundays only beginning November 16. High school through elementary level wrestlers are encouraged to attend open mats. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------COLLEGE WRESTLING Former Knights Wrestling At Next Level Five West Holmes High School graduates and former Knights wrestlers will be competing at the collegiate level of wrestling this 2014 – 2015 season. Max Rohskopf (class of 2013) begins his second season at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, North Carolina, while Justin Stitzlein (class of 2012) is on the wrestling team at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. And, Grayson Miller, Zach Mullet and Caleb Cox, all 2014 W.H.H.S. graduate’s, will be competing for Muskingum University in New Concord, Ohio. rd th Rohskopf (Soph.), a three-time state placer (3 in 2013 and 2012, 7 in 2011) and four-time state qualifier for the Knights, finished his freshman season at N.C. State with an overall mark of 8 – 13. And, that was wrestling at 149 lbs., 157 lbs., and 165 lbs. for the Wolfpack. This season, Rohskopf is tabbed to wrestle at 165 lbs. in his sophomore campaign. After a 6th-place finish at the state tournament in 2012, Stitzlein (Jr.) spent a few years away from the mats before enrolling at Ohio University and decided to get back on the mats this season. The former W.H.H.S. three-time state qualifier (2012, 2011 and 2010) and current school record holder for most near-fall points in a season (191 – 2011) will wrestle at 149 lbs. for the Bobcats. Stitzlein opened his season Sunday, November 2 at the Michigan State University Open Tournament in East Lansing, Michigan with a 4 – 2 mark and a 7th-place finish. ‘Stitz’ lost his opening round match by fall then came roaring back with four consolation wins to reach the consolation semifinals where he was upended by fall. Stitzlein was scheduled to meet Alex Griffin (Purdue University) in the 7th-place match, but that match wasn’t wrestled – common in college wrestling for large 1 day open tournaments – giving Stitzlein a 7th-place finish in the scorebook. The former Knights trio of Miller, Mullet and Cox certainly add a red, white and blue feel to the Fighting Muskies roster. In fact, the college freshman represent their former high school more than any other high school on the Muskingum University roster. Miller, who finished his W.H.H.S. career at 92 – 54 (45 falls), is slated to wrestle at 285 lbs. to begin the season. Mullet, 49 – 73 (13 falls) while a Knight, will compete at 184 lbs. and Cox, 52 – 67 (27 falls) at West Holmes, is slated to wrestle at 157 or 165 lbs. for the Muskies.
