A Message from our Principal
Sadly, there was a car chase, gunshots and arrests made right
outside our pedestrian gate on Tuesday. Unfortunately, there were a
few girls waiting to be fetched after exams at that time. Our security
guard quickly locked the gates to keep the girls, some parents and
anxious passers-by safe inside the school property. The Primary school
were out at break and were quickly taken back into their class
rooms. I thank the entire staff and girls for handling the situation so
calmly, responsibly and in such a well-co-ordinated manner.
If any parent is concerned about the impact that the Tuesday
shootout on Kenneth Kaunda has had on their daughters, please feel
free to contact the ladies from the Durban North / Umhlanga Crisis
Counselling team. They are: Lindsay Garside 074 026 5828 and Carol
van Tonder 084 810 4469.
This year we are delighted that a number of teachers have been
selected as Sub-examiners for the IEB: Mrs Bennett, Ms Blampied,
Mrs Engelbrecht, Mr Harris, Mrs Hicks, Mrs Jones, Dr McFarland and
Miss Rademacher.
Mrs Proctor has been elected as a National Moderator for Life
Orientation and Sr Dominique Bernon is a Chief Sub-examiner for
Business Studies.
This is further proof that your girls are in good hands.

FATHER DES NAIR
Fr Des Nair, who has been our School Chaplain and the Parish Priest at Our Lady of Fatima
for the past twenty-five years, will be leaving us at the end of January 2015.
He will be moving to the Parish of Our Lady of Lourdes in Westville, and Fr Des Royappen,
the Priest at St Joseph’s Parish in Florida Road, will be our new Parish Priest.
We will have the opportunity in the new year, to pay special tribute to Fr Des Nair and to
thank him for his service to our school community, before he leaves us to take up his new
position in Westville.
FIRST CONFESSION
These girls in the photo made their
First Confession at Our Lady of Fatima and
Blessed Sacrament parishes this year.
This is a special time for them
and their families.
CULTURE & HUMANITIES
Annual Carol Service
All Fatima Families and friends of Fatima are invited to attend our Carol Service to be held
in the church on Monday, 1 December at 6.00pm. Attendance is compulsory for the
Grade 4 – 7 Choir girls. All pupils attending are to wear school uniform. We will be
collecting Christmas gifts for the underprivileged so donations of gifts labelled “boy” or
“girl” and age may be brought to the service and left in the collection box at the
entrance.

Touch Rugby
The girls played well and won the Touch Rugby tournament at Durban North College last
Friday! This team won all the pool games and went on to score a 3 – 1 victory over
Westville girls in the final.
The team played well, with Hannah Maujean once again being named the “Player of the
Final” with 2 fine scores, while Naomi Maujean set up Brittney Swart for the 3rd try.
It’s wonderful to see how well you are doing, girls!

Kendal Gorlei and Gabriella Latham competed in the invitation Girls U18 KZN Mini Masters
tennis tournament. This tournament is by invitation only to the top 8 players in the
respective age groups. The top 8 players are drawn from the results of three KZN series held
during the year. Congratulations to our girls! Kendal Gorlei won the tournament and
Gabriella Latham was awarded runner-up. Great tennis, girls! Keep this up!

Grade 6 and 7 Ladder Tennis League
Please see the updated points for the Grade 6 and 7 Ladder Challenge below. There are
three more Saturdays left. By the end of the 7-week challenge, all players will have played
against each other.
These mornings have been met with enthusiasm and a wonderful spirit. The girls who have
participated fully are starting to display immense improvement. This is also noticeable in the
Inter-Schools’ Tennis matches each week. Well done to all the girls who have been a part
of this initiative! The top six players are as follows:

U13 Bar One won

The Fatima U13s played against each other. The teams were selected randomly. Each
player dipped their hand into a bag of Mini Tex Bars and Bar Ones. This determined the two
teams.
Swimming
The U10 – U13 ‘A’ swimmers swam in their final gala of the term. The gala was attended by
boys’ schools, girls’ schools and co-ed schools. There were no points awarded at this gala.
We did, however, manage to finish in the top 4 in many events. Our U12s have made us
especially proud by, once again, winning all their events.
I hope that the girls will continue to build on this great start to the season. It will be
necessary to maintain their swimming during the 6-week break in order to be fit for the
galas in Term 1. The first ‘A’ gala will be in the 2nd week of the term! It is important to note
that it requires 3 – 4 weeks to build up fitness after a break in training.
PLEASE DIARISE: The Durban and Districts (D & D) galas will take place in the 1st week of
March. The North Durban and Interhouse Galas will be held mid-February.
Well done on a great term of swimming! It has really been a positive start to the season!
Dancing
Gabriella Whitaker participated in the KZN Dance Festival during the school holidays and
was awarded a Gold medal for her Ballet solo called ‘The Gypsy’, two Silver medals for her
Group Ballet dances and a Bronze medal for her Modern Group dance. She then did her
Modern Dance Exam and received Honours with Distinction.
Gabriella has also been selected to dance with the Playhouse resident dancers in the
production called “A Christmas Celebration”. The show will run in the Opera Theatre from
19 – 21 December 2014. Well done, Gabriella!
