MESSAGE TO TEA ROOM PATRON MEMBERS
Dear Tea Room Patron Member,
Thank you for your continued support of the Junior League of Houston through
your Tea Room patron membership. As a valued patron member, you support
the Junior League’s commitment to the community by sponsoring an event in
the Ballroom, attending the League’s special events, dining in the Tea Room,
ordering from the Pantry or participating in the Refer a Friend program. These
activities allow the Junior League to continue “Building A Better Community”
with 36 community projects, community assistance grants and other initiatives.
The year is off to a great start with many exciting events. The League’s Opening
Style Show was a huge success! Two sold out shows offered a sneak peek into
the latest fashion trends for fall and winter by TOOTSIES, featuring plenty of
feathers and pearls as a nod to the Roaring 20’s Affair theme. Children took over
the League for one evening at the Back to School Style Show modeling the latest
school fashions. Malcolm hosted his annual Meals with Malcolm: Oktoberfest
Beer and German Food Tasting that proved to be another League success;
especially to the gentlemen in our lives. We are excited about the overwhelming
demand for more informal style shows and have been diligently planning more
opportunities for you to join us this year. Be on the lookout for informal style
shows to prepare or celebrate the holidays featuring: Tenenbaum & Co., The
Vintage Contessa and Pinto Ranch to name a few. We hope you’ll try the new
brunch menu items offered on Friday and Saturday in the Tea Room beginning
in October. Now is a great time to ease your mind by ordering Thanksgiving
Dinner from the JLH Pantry. ‘Tis the season to give, so please offer your thanks
and show support of the Tea Room at the same time.
We thank you for your generosity and patronage. We wish you and your loved
ones a very special holiday season.
Happy Holidays,
Elizabeth Graves Love
President

COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT
Kids’ Meals
The mission of Kids’ Meals is to end
hunger among children by delivering
nutritious meals to the doors of
children in need, free of cost, every
weekday, year round. Kids’ Meals
focuses on children ages one to five,
who are not yet old enough to receive
free lunches at school. Although the
focus is on preschool-aged children,
many of these children’s siblings
receive meals during the summer and
on school holidays as well.
Kids’ Meals is one of the Junior
League’s most popular community
placements. Volunteers help prepare
1,200 lunches each Monday night
in the League’s Kitchen. Each lunch
consists of a whole-wheat sandwich
with turkey or ham, a piece of
fruit or snack, and juice box. The
Junior League placement also gives
volunteers the opportunity to deliver
sandwiches on a weekday route.
Caitlin Morrison Eaves, Kids’
Meals Chairman, says, “I truly
believe the deliveries are an eyeopening experience. All of the work
put in each week definitely pays off
as you see each of the kids so excited
to grab their lunch and see what is
inside.”
Currently serving 1,700 children per
day, Kids’ Meals has aspirations to
double the number of children served
by 2016, with the help of community
volunteers, like those provided by the
Junior League.
90 Hours for 90 Years Campaign:
Celebrating the Junior League’s 90th Anniversary
The 90 Hours for 90 Years campaign was created to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the
Junior League of Houston. Each League year, active members are required to complete a
placement in the community, Tea Room or administrative capacity, most of which require
72 hours of service. By participating in the campaign, members voluntarily agree to perform
an additional 18 hours of service towards the League’s mission between June 1, 2014 –
May 31, 2015.
Participating members may complete the additional hours in their assigned community or
Tea Room placement. Special volunteer projects throughout the Greater Houston Area
and within the League building and Tea Room are being coordinated to ensure there are
sufficient opportunities to complete these additional hours. Members have also enjoyed
volunteering in community placements to which they are not assigned, like Kids’ Meals
and the Houston Food Bank. One special event at the Houston Food Bank even allowed
members to bring friends and family to volunteer. The campaign is not only have having an
impact on the community, but also it has provided members with greater exposure to the
needs in the Houston community and has enabled members to meet new friends.
The Junior League greatly appreciates the 329 members who have signed up to participate
in the campaign as of September 30, 2014. These members have already contributed
an additional 1,500 volunteer hours, embodying the League’s efforts in “Building A Better
Community.”
