Montgomery County Cultural Foundation Job Description Executive Director Report to: Montgomery County Cultural Foundation Board of Directors Supervise: Staff and volunteers Compensation: Part-time position (20 hours /week average) Paid twice a month Benefits: Vacation – 20 hours annually Personal time – 10 hours annually Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree required and Master’s preferred in Museum Studies, History, Public History, Art History or related field. Coursework in non-profit or business related fields desirable. Professional experience comparable to above education considered. Skills: Strong management and leadership skills Success in strategic planning and fundraising; grant-writing experience strongly preferred Clear understanding of professional museum standards and willingness to adhere to those standards Experience in planning and implementing diverse types of educational programming Experience in designing and installing museum exhibits Ability to communicate effectively with diverse range of individuals Position Summary: The Executive Director is responsible for managing the daily operations and for the educational and creative direction of the organization, collections, interpretations, exhibitions, acquisitions and donations; recommends policies and assures that approved policies are followed; plans and directs activities, special events, summer camps; oversees operation, preservation and maintenance of the Rotary Jail Museum and the Tannenbaum Cultural Center; is responsible for supervising and coordinating the work of the staff and volunteers; works with the board to plan and implement fundraising activities, i.e. capital campaigns, endowment campaigns, and grant writing; serves as the primary spokesperson for the organization; endeavors to comply with established professional museum standards. Key Responsibilities: Administration: Work with staff to plan and implement educational programming and coordinate outreach activities; develop and cultivate opportunities to raise the organization profile Ensure an ongoing public presence for the organization through marketing, public speaking, and other public communications, i.e. newsletters, updates, web site, social media, media releases Recruit, interview, hire, and terminate staff and oversee their work; provide direction, support, and evaluation Work with volunteers and staff to assure that the organization’s sites are available to the public during specified hours of operations; work with staff to develop interpretive plan; train staff Serve as head of staff, providing oversight, direction, support, and evaluation Supervise volunteer program. Ensure that the organization and its physical assets (including materials on loan) are properly and adequately insured Work for and support the Board of Directors in their governance role, including selection of directors Promote professional museum standards to the Board of Directors and staff; act as an advocate for the organization’s collections and facilities ensuring that policies and procedures conform to accepted professional museum standards and codes of ethics Work with the Board of Directors and staff to establish overall direction and priorities including the development, implementation, and periodic revision of a strategic plan Manage the organization and staff within the established policies and practices and pursuant to the approved mission and vision Refer research requests to the appropriate individual or organization to ensure that the requests are filled Serve as nonvoting member of all standing committees Oversee the operation of the Turnkey Gift Shop Schedule and lead tours as needed Development/Finance: Work with the Finance Committee to develop a yearly budget and to ensure that sound financial policies and controls are in place, and disburse funds appropriately Complete annual evaluations of all staff and recommend appropriate financial remuneration Work with the Board of Directors and staff to establish and implement fundraising goals, encourage ongoing participation of Board members as donors and solicitors Help to identify and cultivate individual, foundation, and corporate donors and expand donor base; research and write grant proposals, develop annual solicitations, and other fundraising initiatives Curatorial: Ensure the preservation and maintenance of the Rotary Jail Museum, Tannenbaum Cultural Center and the museum grounds Direct and oversee the acquisition of artifacts and archival materials in accordance with approved Collections Management Policy Direct and oversee preservation, conservation, and interpretation of artifacts and archival materials in the permanent collections of the organization Initiate and administer policies and programs that benefit the collections Supervise housekeeping of the sites belonging to the organization Approved by the Montgomery County Cultural Foundation Board of Directors on 11-18-2014
