Since graduating more than twenty years ago Rob has had the opportunity to gain experience in a variety of engineering applications including construction, consulting, public utility, and, most recently, in the regulatory sector. As a consultant, Rob has covered the complete gamut of steps required to establish and put in to operation and maintain wastewater treatment lagoons at locations throughout the province. For the past fourteen years, Rob has been employed as an Environmental Engineer with the Environmental Approvals Branch of Manitoba Conservation & Water Stewardship and is typically involved in the Environment Act Proposal review and licensing processes for new or altered sewage treatment plants and wastewater treatment lagoons as well as for industrial and mining activities and facilities throughout Manitoba. Donna Smiley – Manitoba Conservation - Donna has worked for Manitoba Conservation since 1990 both as a Public Health Inspector and an Environment Officer. For the last 19 years her primary focus has been on the environment programs. Donna worked as a regional Environment Officer in Selkirk until to 2007. She is presently the departmental program coordinator for onsite wastewater management systems and the regional municipal wastewater programs. For many years Donna worked with the Operators involved in the Municipal Wastewater Program in the Interlake Region and has experience with the operation and maintenance of wastewater treatment facilities. Merle Kroeker - Merle Kroeker, P. Eng, graduated from the University of Manitoba with a degree in Biosystems Engineering. He is a Project Development Engineer with Nelson Environmental Inc. His experience includes wastewater treatment system process design and optimization and he has been involved in projects across North America. Projects include lagoon based municipal and industrial wastewater treatment systems, storm water treatment, as well as raw water reservoir improvements. His current focus is on post lagoon cold climate ammonia removal, for new or upgrades of existing lagoon wastewater treatment systems. Mike Heppner - Mike Heppner is Department Head for the City of Steinbach Waterworks Department. He along with 10 fulltime employees maintain all 4 categories of the Class II Water and Wastewater utility. Mike started his career in water and wastewater in 1995. In 2001 he became Waterworks Department Head and has held the position for the past 13 years. In 2007, Mike achieved Manitoba Conservation Class II certification for WT, WD, WWC, and WWT. Note: Participants in this workshop are eligible for 0.6 continuing education units (CEUs) under the Manitoba operator certification program.
