“There may be people that have more talent than you, but there’s no excuse for anyone
to work harder than you do”
- Derek Jeter
In this newsletter, we will be highlighting the numerous coaches from all three locations and the groups that they work with on a weekly basis. We have one of the largest
and most accredited staffs in the Metropolitan area and we are proud to offer such
coaching to the Condors swimmers.
New to this newsletter, we have attached the host meet information and most current meet entries to the blue bar directly to the right. If you click the bold meet name
you will see the meet info and if you click the dates, an individual meet entry will appear. Please be sure to still check the Swim Meets & Events Page for daily updates and
postings.
Also, we have added a parents bulletin board article based upon a series from USA
swimming as well as an article about health and nutrition. Both will be commonplace in
all upcoming newsletters.
Lastly, Coach Dorsey has still not received any submissions for a leading motivational
quote or swimmer spotlight pictures with fun facts provided. Check the final page of the
newsletter for details.

CONDORS—WE ARE UNIQUE!
Since arriving here at the Condors in late March, several swimmers have asked me why the team is named Condors. Remarks,
such as “birds don’t swim” seem to be a common feeling about our team name. So, I did a little research.
When Bob Carlucci began the program 34 years ago, the Condor was in jeopardy of becoming extinct. Condors are two species
of vultures and they are the largest flying land birds in the Western Hemisphere. I found it very interesting that they have distinctive bare heads, much like we do once we put our caps on for races.

Most importantly in my search for information regarding Condors is that I realized we are the only
swim team in the Country to be named after these large, broad-winged soaring birds. In that regard,
we are unique and should be proud of that. So many teams are named sharks or dolphins, but no
other swimmers can say that they are A CONDOR.

Happy thanksgiving
It seems like just yesterday we were sitting with Linus hoping that, finally, he would be visited
by the Great Pumpkin. Dressed in our favorite costumes and hopped up on assorted candies,
Halloween was awesome this year.
Well, as a blink can so easily cast us into the future, its time to get ready for Peppermint Patty
to invite herself and her merry mates to your Thanksgiving dinner.
Be sure to remember how special it is to spend time with family and friends as you enjoy the
holiday and please accept our thanks to all Condors swimmers and families.

Lessons & Stroke Development
Currently, we have 22 coaches on staff and counting. It is a crew that ranges from newcomers to hall of
famers and we are all excited to not only teach, but also learn something new every day.
The glue that keeps the coaches and the team together is our director Laurie Lawson
It is amazing how much she does for the Condors and for the holiday next week the staff will be saying
their THANKS for having a Laurie to lead the way.
welcome coach Ted Metz
In just a couple of weeks, Coach Ted has already made an impact on the younger groups at Felix Festa. A natural in terms of
coaching, Ted has a keen eye for detail in regards to technique and stroke efficiency in the water as well as a refreshing patience
when working with all swimmers.
Coach Ted will be working primarily with the Pre-Team, Stroke Development and Bronze Groups, but he will also be seen assisting
with all groups as needed on a weekly basis.
We are happy to have Coach Ted as part of the Condors family and hope you all get a chance to give him a warm welcome when
“Watching Your children at SWim PracticeS and comPetitionS”
For over four years I watched my daughter swim under
the direction of other coaches. I have also watched her
at basketball practice and games, and dance, and figure
skating. I know the joy of watching her in these activities. I also know and understand the overwhelming desire to direct, correct, encourage, and sometimes scold
my child at practice or at a swim meet. But those are
not proper parental behaviors once I have released her
into the care of a coach or teacher. As a parent, I am
not to interfere with the practice or swim competition by
attempt to talk to my child or the coach while they are on
the deck.
In our swim program, we want the child’s attention focused on the coach and the tasks at hand. Occasionally
children miss an instruction, or have a goggle problem,
or are involved in some other distraction, or are simply
playing and having fun – which is all normal behavior for
young children. We view these little difficulties as part of
the learning process and we allow the children an opportunity to develop the self-discipline and self-reliance
needed to overcome these difficulties without the help of
moms or dads.
We know it is common in many other youth sports for
parents to stand at the sidelines or bleachers and shout
instructions or encouragements and sometimes admonishments to their children. However, in our swim program we ask you not to signal them to swim faster, or to
tell them to try a certain technique, or offer a race strategy, or even to remind them to listen to the coach. In
fact, just as you would never interrupt a school classroom to talk your child, you should not interrupt a swim
practice by attempting to communicate directly with your
child.
What’s wrong with encouraging your child during practice? There are two issues. First we want your child to
focus on the coach and to learn the skill for their personal satisfaction rather than learning it to please their parents. Secondly, parental encouragement often gets
translated into a command to swim faster and swimming
faster may be the exact opposite of what the coach is
trying to accomplish. In most stroke skill development
we first slow the swimmers down so that they can think
through the stroke motions. Save encouragements and
praise for after the practice session! This is the time
when you have your child’s full attention to tell them how
proud you are of them.
What’s wrong with discussing race strategy or shouting or
signaling instructions to your children? When I watch my 9
year old daughter play in a basketball league I understand
the overwhelming desire of parents to shout instructions to
their children because that is what I want to do. But those
instructions might be different from the coach’s instructions
and then you have a confused child. Sometimes you might
think the child did not hear the coach’s instruction and you
want to help. Most of us do not want to see our own kids
make a mistake. The fact is that children miss instructions
all the time. Part of the learning process is learning how to
listen to instructions. When children learn to rely on a backup they will have more difficulty learning how to listen better
the first time.
If you need to speak to your child regarding a family issue
or a transportation issue or to take your child from practice
early you are certainly welcome to do so but please approach the coach directly with your request and we will immediately get your child out of the water. If you need to
speak to the coach for other reasons please wait until the
end of practice or send an email or leave a phone message
to set up a better time for such a discussion.
I have been coaching young children for over 30 years. I
appreciate the opportunity to enjoy their enthusiasm and
energy and wonderful personalities. I coach each of them
with care for their safety and concern for their social, physical, learning skills and life skills development. Thanks for
bringing your children here as we both teach them to become more responsible and confident young people.

Nutrition Fact Sheet

Athlete Eating Guidelines
Focus on the following nutrition principles
year-round:
Stay hydrated. Your body is more than 60% water and your muscles
depend on water to function properly. A dehydrated body cannot train
or compete at its peak. Drink enough so that your urine looks like
pale lemonade or apple juice and so that you are urinating frequently
throughout the day.
Fuel up before training. Focus on eating lean proteins, fruits and
vegetables and whole grains to ensure that your body is prepared for
training. Try not to go into a training session with an empty fuel tank.
Eat a meal 3-4 hours or a snack 1-2 hours before exercise.
Boost your immune system. Choose foods that are high in antioxidants such as fruits and vegetables to help keep your immune system
healthy and reduce the amount of free radicals that your body builds up
during high intensity training. Choose more colorful fruits and vegetables such as blueberries, strawberries, kiwis, oranges, broccoli, carrots
and sweet potatoes.
INFORMATION
Limit fats. Saturated and trans fats can cause inflammation which is
the exact opposite of what elite athletes need. Stay away from foods
that are processed or fried, and higher fat meats like chicken wings,
bologna and pastrami. Choose non-inflammatory unsaturated fats such
as olives, avocados, nuts, seeds, and salmon.
Eat to recover. Choose carbohydrate rich foods with some protein
within 30-60 minutes of finishing a training session to help your body
recover faster. Good choices after workouts include: peanut better
sandwich (half or whole), carton of chocolate milk, or a bowl of cereal
with milk or yogurt.
Sport products. Sports bars, gels and drinks do have their place in an
elite athlete’s eating program. Be sure to not over-use these types of
products, however, as they can deter body weight goals and can replace
more beneficial calories from whole foods. Use sports products before,
during or immediately after practice depending on your sport needs and
goals.
A proper eating program is just as important to an
elite athlete’s success as a training program.
Think of your body as a car...
The foods and drinks you consume are the fuel.
Elite athletes are like finely tuned cars that require
high quality fuel to achieve optimal performance.
Putting low quality fuel into your body can lead to
poor health and sub-par performance.
