A Special Thank You from Swinburne Research
My colleagues and I would like to express our appreciation for the tremendous amount of love and support
we've felt coming from the Swinburne community over the past two days.
George was greatly cherished, both within our office, the University and wider community.
His fine example has made it possible for us to band together and inspired us to work together in honour of
his memory. This has been a terribly painful time for us, but also taught us the value of an honourable mentor.
We thank you for your continued support.
Yours sincerely - Matthew Bailes Pro-Vice Chancellor (Research).

Thank You to ARC Linkage Projects Applicants
Last Wednesday was the submission deadline for the ARC's Linkage Projects scheme. Swinburne submitted 10 proposals:
six from FSET
two from FHAD
two from FBE
This scheme requires industry partners who must commit cash and/or in-kind resources.
Some facts:
Total ARC funds request is $3,360,712
21 partner organisations have participated on proposals (this does not include any other universities)
The partner organisations have committed to $848,027 cash and $2,664,011 in-kind if the applications are
successful
A sincere thank you to all applicants and the teams responsible for putting together proposals.
NHMRC
NHMRC - RGMS: Now Available (website)
file:///C|/Users/sfried/Documents/Research/researchers/bulletin/2014/bulletin.php.html[20/11/2014 11:49:39 AM]
Research Bulletin > Information for Swinburne Researchers > Swinburne Research > Swinburne University of Technology
The NHMRC's Research Grants Management System (RGMS) has been successfully upgraded and is now
available for use.
Key changes include:
Navigation:
In addition to the standard tabs (Applicant, RAO, Assessor, etc) available on the home page, RGMS now
features a new menu bar to assist with navigation. This includes Home, Back, Recent and Favourites
links. Hovering over the Home link also gives access to all pages
Links once found in side menus can now be found under drop-down menus. For example, all application
menu options (General, Part A and Part B) now appear under a drop-down menu on the Applications
Properties tab. Drop-down menus on other Properties tabs (e.g. Profile and CV, etc) operate in a similar
way
The Submit button has been replaced by a Save and Return button, which saves the actions on the
current page before returning to the previous page
Lookups and Editing:
Users can now type directly into lookup fields (e.g. Administering Institution, Research keywords,
Research team members , etc) to get auto-suggested results, avoiding the need to use the binocular icon
to search for and select results
In-line editing is now possible for some assessment fields (e.g. Panel/Spokesperson Assessment Selection
Criteria fields), avoiding the need for assessors to put RGMS into “Edit Mode”
Quick Reference Guides, User Guides, and eLearning modules can be found on the RGMS Training webpage.
NHMRC - 2015 Deadlines (website)
The NHMRC have released the deadlines for all 2015 rounds - both the internal and external deadlines for the
2015 NHMRC rounds are now avilable on the Swinburne Research website.
Read Updates on Initiatives to Improve Clinical Trials
The following updates on initiatives to improve clinical trials are now available:
A report on a ‘Good Practice Process’ for the site assessment and authorisation phases of clinical trials
research governance
A report on the concept for a national application form for research involving humans
An updated review of laws and regulations for research involving humans in Australia

Cell Lines: Do You Need SBC Approval for Working with Cell Lines? (website)
Cell lines (or subclones) in themselves do not necessarily present a risk. However, some cell lines contain
pathogenic organisms. Therefore, for every cell line that is manipulated in a laboratory, at a minimum you need
to make a detailed risk assessment in order to ensure that appropriate precautions and practices are followed. Please consider some of the following: 1. Do you know the source of the cell line?

What is 3MT?
Three Minute Thesis (3MT) is a research communication competition developed by The University of
Queensland (UQ). Doctor of Philosophy students have three minutes to present a compelling oration on their
thesis and its significance. The first 3MT was held at The University of Queensland in 2008 with 160 RHD
students competing. Enthusiasm for the 3MT concept grew and its widespread implementation by universities
has led to the development of an international competition.
Trans-Tasman 3MT Final
The Trans-Tasman 3MT – Three Minute Thesis Competition final was held on Thursday 3 November at the
University of Western Australia in Perth. This year Swinburne’s grand finalist, Javeria Jalal from the Faculty of
Science, Engineering & Technology, gave a fantastic presentation along with 48 doctoral finalists from
Universities in Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, Singapore and Hong Kong.
The winner of the Trans-Tasman Final was Sarah Marley from Curtin University and her talk was “Say what?
Coastal dolphins and noisy environments.” The Runner up and also Peoples’ Choice award, was Rosanna
Stevens from the ANU with her talk “Now you see it”. The 3MT story and competition was filmed by the ABC’s program, Lateline and is scheduled to air on
Wednesday 19 November. Once the story has gone to air, the Swinburne Research training website will be
updated with links to the story here: http://www.research.swinburne.edu.au/research-students/training/.
