VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT Dining Manager, Jolly Giant Commons (The “J”) Review: Tuesday, December 2, 2014. Open until filled $3,059 - $4,282/mo. ($17.65 - $24.70/hr.), DOE. This is a full-time position in HSU Dining Services with benefits including health, dental, and vision insurance; vacation, sick leave, and retirement. About: The “J” dining hall, located on the 4th floor of the Jolly Giant Commons building, is the primary dining facility for HSU residence hall students, and the campus community is also welcome. Open seven days a week, The “J” serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The “J” operates on a 5-week cycle and serves approximately 2,500 customers daily. For additional information about The “J” and HSU Dining Services, please visit: http://www.humboldt.edu/housing/dining/locations/thej.html Position Summary: The “J” Dining Manager, along with the Assistant Director, is responsible for the overall operation of The “J” dining unit. Maintaining high quality standards in regard to food safety and sanitation, food preparation and presentation, and general work place environment safety is of utmost importance. Work with staff to make sure there are an adequate number of workers. Monitor financial records to ensure that the unit is operated efficiently and within budget constraints. Provide excellent customer service to the campus community by properly training, supervising, and coaching The “J” employees. The primary function of this position is the ordering and inventory of food products for the unit. Duties: The “J” Dining Manager is responsible for, but not limited to, the following: Hire, schedule and supervise over 100 part-time “J” employees. Provide employee safety and other job related training. Assist in the development and oversee compliance of HSU Dining and Federal/State food safety policies. Oversees the ordering, receiving and storage of food, cleaning products and paper supplies. Ensures food products are prepared to quality and food safety standards. Oversee kitchen staff in the production and supply of food products. Maintains food service equipment and reduce waste. Oversee cashiers, POS equipment and responsible to see that cash controls are followed. Oversee floor and cooking station operations to ensure food handling and sanitation procedures are complied with. Oversee staff to ensure seating areas are clean and well presented, and condiments are properly stocked. Maintain excellent customer service; resolve customer concerns. Oversees monthly inventory count and other recordkeeping functions. Assist with food preparation, serving, cashiering and catering duties as needed. Participate in campus safety and emergency activities. Minimum Qualifications: Education & Experience: Must have at least five years of food service experience, especially in the supervisory and management capacity. 1 Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of safe food handling and sanitation practices. Experienced with foodservice industry activities, practices and equipment usage. Have a working knowledge of sustainability issues and solutions. Skilled in motivating and supervising foodservice personnel. Ability to schedule, supervise, and evaluate the work of others. Knowledgeable in vegan, vegetarian and allergen diets. Must be able to work with minimal supervision. Ability to work effectively in a climate characterized by heavy traffic loads, shifting priorities, and the need to balance multiple tasks. Ease in dealing with a diverse population, including students, faculty, staff, and the general public. Must be able to apply and interpret policies and procedures. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Ability to maintain cooperative working relationships in a team-oriented environment. General knowledge of computers and use of Microsoft Office programs such as Word and Excel. Physical Requirements: Average physical agility and ability to stand for prolonged periods of time; strength and mobility to lift and carry items up to 50 pounds; reach, bend, kneel, stoop, climb, push and pull items. Must have manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination; corrected hearing and vision to normal range and clear verbal communication. Ability to work extended shifts. Special Conditions of Employment: Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends. Must possess ServSafe manager’s certificate or equivalent. Speak, read, write, and understand English. Occasional layoff due to lack of work; these periods generally fall on semester breaks and summer session. Strong customer service orientation. Valid California Driver's License and a driving record acceptable to our insurance underwriters. Willingness to comply with neat grooming standards and present a professional appearance.
