Wine List - The Quality Chop House
We have around 125 wines which we feel reflect the
world’s most interesting wine regions and styles – old,
new, established, iconoclastic, white, red, pink, orange…
We do not have a specific focus and we are a broad
church.
At the lower end of the list our wines have been sourced
from small producers and lesser well-known importers.
At the top we hope to represent some of the world’s best
wines and winemakers (some of which are only available
in the UK on this list) at particularly good prices.

2009 Chateau Thenac ‘Fleur du Thenac Rouge’ France, Bergerac | Cabernet Sauvignon et al
This is a very decent wine which has found its way to us at an
even more decent price. Not complex or difficult, but rich and
very well-structured. Intense red fruit and a bit of spice.
2012 Quinta Milú
Spain, Ribera del Duero | Tempranillo
Incredibly fresh and lively - the complete opposite of heavily
oaked Tempranillo. This is a great ‘table wine’ to be drunk over
lunch or with a few small plates. Dry finish. Quite un-Spanish.
2010 Viano Vineyards, Hillside Cabernet Sauvignon
USA, California | Cabernet Sauvignon
Californian reds are often dismissed as being too expensive and
too oaky- this is neither. Fresh fruit and the soft-punch of ripe
Cab Sauv. A very welcome new addition to the list.

its own or with fruity/creamy dessert.
2004 Château Raymond-Lafon Sauternes £10
France, Bordeaux | Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Muscadelle
Far fresher than many a 10-year old sauternes, this tastes like a

1936 Château Sisqueille ‘Rivesaltes’
£9 (50ml)/£18 (100ml)
France, Roussillon | Grenache Blanc/Noir Blend
An amazing ‘Vin Doux Naturel’ - full toffee and citrus flavour but

Macabeo and robust Grenache.
2013 Chateau Clement-Termes ‘David’
France, South West | Sauvignon Blanc, Mauzac
A fruity and floral favourite from Gaillac deep in the South West
of France where we find some of our best value whites. This can
be an aperitif but also lovely with fish.
2013 Clip
Portugal, VInho Verde | Loureiro
Very clear, crisp and clean summer white wine. This is very
drinkable but also complex - no mean feat at 11% abv - and unlike
many other wines from Vinho Verde, it has real character.
2013 Mittelheimer Edelmann Trocken, Weingut Mehrlein
Germany, Rheingau | Riesling
Pretty chuffed to have found a delightful (and delightfully priced)
riesling. Clear fruit and just a touch of sweetness make this a
great way to start things off.
2013 Domaine Beauséjour ‘Les Grenettes’ Touraine France, Loire | Sauvignon Blanc
Philippe and Véronique Trotignon of Domaine Beauséjour work
very hard at the lean soils of their cool vineyards, giving textbook
crisp and vibrant Loire valley sauvignon.

Spain, La Mancha | Airén
Esencia Rural enjoy wide variations of temperature for their old,
ungrafted vines creating fresh, approachable natural wine.
2013 ‘Force Majeur’ Johan Meyer

Sophisticated for a wine of such youth, this is bottled unfiltred
allowing the nutty, appley notes of chenin maximum freshness.

Portugal, Barraida| Maria Gomes
From one of our favourite maker of entry-level wines anywhere
in the world comes a complex and rich white with great balance
between citrus and minerality. A real winner for the price.
2013 Txacoli, Gaintza Spain, Getaria | Gros Manseng, Hondarrabi Zuri

but big enough to go with any food. One of our new favourites.
2012 Jean Maréchal ‘Les Monts Damnés’ Sancerre £45
France, Loire | Sauvignon Blanc
We think this is a great Sancerre. A bit more complex than most
and ideal with some fish or as an aperitif. Dry but not simple.
2012 Catarratto, Nino Barraco£45
Italy, Sicily | Catarratto
Nino’s jet black soils are a fertile bed for catarratto vines - giving
this wine smoke and saltiness in equal measure. Thrilling.
2012 Chablis Premier Cru Vaillons Maison Verget
£49
France, Burgundy | Chardonnay
An excellent Premier Cru chablis from a master winemaker. The
freshness of the Vaillons classified climat is perfect for chablis.
Cheaper chablis can be found but better value than this is rare.
2011 Cantina Giardino ‘Adam’
£55
Italy, Campanie | Greco
Greco can often be boring - not with 20 year old vines and 4 days
of skin contact. Burnt toffee colour - a great orange wine.
2011 Villa Diamante, Vigne delle Congregazione
£59
Italy, Campania| Fiano
What a wine this is - vivid gold in colour and incredibly ripe but
with youthful citrus that makes you want to sip again. The best
example of this grape we’ve come across.
2012 Le Coste di Gradoli, Bianco
£61
Italy, Lazio| Procanico
Rich and big but no sulphur and no so2 and yet delicious. A very
hard trick to pull off - but perhaps easier if you have the unique
soils of the village of Gradoli and some devoted winemakers. This
is absolutely lovely - pears and peaches and lots of grip.

GREAT WINEMAKERS
Here is a small selection of our favourite whites from winemakers of exceptional
dedication and skill. They are all different in style, price and method but share a
total commitment to expressing their region’s finest white grapes in the best way
possible.
2012 La Biancara Angiolino Maule ‘Sassaia’ Bianco
Italy, Veneto | Garganega
‘Nature is queen’ say Angiolino and Rosamaria Maule - an
approach which suits the delicately aromatic garganega perfectly.
Aged in stainless steel, it is fresh but complex.
2009 Richard Leroy ‘Les Noels de Montbenault’
France, Loire | Chenin Blanc
This is stunning value for one of our favourite wines on the list.
Unctuous, quince-like chenin blanc fruit which just goes on and on.
Richard Leroy is one of the region’s great winemakers and plays
only by his rules - precise wine-making and maximum expression
of the grape - rather than any AOC template meaning this is
labelled as humble old ‘VIn de France’. Don’t be fooled.
2001 Carl von Schubert Maximin Grunhauser Abtsberg Spätlese Germany, Mosel-Saar-Ruwer | Riesling
A wine to show why many consider riesling to be the most complex
white grape of them all - this is one of our favourites and from one
of the ancestors of the orignal C. Von Schubert. Peach and honey
on the palate, with some tart apply acidity to balance. One of the
great rieslings and a real treat to have it with some age.
£42
2012 PY Colin-Morey Montagny ‘Les Burnins’ Premier Cru
France, Burgundy | Chardonnay
Drinking beautifully now, Montagny may be a lesser-known name in
Burgundy but in the safe hands of PYCM it’s elevated to something
truly delicious - crisp, citrus acidity but creamy on the finish.
2009 PY Colin-Morey, Pernand-Vergelesses Sous Fretille Premier Cru
France, Burgundy | Chardonnay
We recently managed to unearth a few remaining bottles of this, and
very glad we did. From deep soils next to Chevalier-Montrachet, this
is exremely precise and refreshing. More minerally than creamy

2012 Domaine Yves Cuilleron ‘Chaillets’ Condrieu France, Rhône | Viognier
A King in Condrieu – a wine which is great when good and
dreadful when bad. Cuilleron deals solely in the former. This is
rich, creamy and perfect with food.
2007 Chablis la Forest, Domaine René et Vincent Dauvissat
France, Burgundy | Chardonnay
A truly exceptional white burgundy making a strong case that
the traditional methods of making chardonnay in this corner of
France are yet to be bettered anywhere. In perfect nick.

2013 Cuna de la Poeta ‘Rosado’
Spain, Rioja | Garnacha Noir, Tempranillo
Nothing wrong with this. Fruit and freshness in perfect balance.
2012 Château de Roquefort ‘La Grele’
France, Southern France | Grenache, Cincault, Mourvedre et al
Hail destroyed nearly all of Château de Roquefort’s vineyards
grapes within 7 minutes. Calls were made and soon the best
producers in Bandol were sending parcels of fruit so 2012 wouldn’t
go by without some rosé made by Raimond de Villeneuve and his
team. This is the result.
2012 Domaine Tempier Bandol France, Provence | Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre
As with all Bandols, this has more weight and character than
most. Rich, peachy palate - could last throughout the meal. From
our favourite rose producer in the world.

more decent price. Rich and very well-structured this is a house
red of great pedigree and class.
2012 Bodegas Jimenez, Bajondillo Mentrida
£24
Spain, La Mancha | Garnacha, Syrah
Fantastic value because they are less proud of these international
non-Spanish grapes. They shouldn’t be - this is a lovely blend of
punchy grenache and smooth syrah.
2013 ‘Z’ Zinfandel
£24
South Africa, Swartland | Zinfandel
Very fresh and vibrant - this is much more precise than many
New World zinfandels. Made by Craig Hawkins, who makes more
natural-focused top-end reds, it has zero sweetness. Just fruit.
2013 Quinta Milú
£27
Spain, Ribera del Duero | Tempranillo
Incredibly fresh and lively - the complete opposite of heavily
oaked Tempranillo. This is a great ‘table wine’ to be drunk over
lunch or with a few small plates. Dry finish. Quite un-Spanish.
2010 Domaine Santa Duc Les Plans, Vin de Pays du Vaucluse
£29
France, Rhone | Southern Rhone Blend
An ideal Southern Rhone and a great deal of high quality
winemaking for the money. This is deliciously savoury and one of
the real bargains from our recent tastings. Santa Duc make all
kinds of special cuvees but this is just as well-made.
2012 Beaujolais Villages, Les Vignes de Thulon, Jean-Marc Burgaud £29
France, Beaujolais | Gamay
A delicious, earthy summery-but-not-sweet gamay from the
hilly vineyards of Chateau du Thulon. Fine value from a great
winemaker.
2013 Monteforche, Lo Sfuso di Collina
£30
Italy, Veneto | Cabernet Franc
Very drinkable, unfussy and unfiltered table wine from fertile,
volcanic soils in the Veneto. Not your typical Italian red, but all the
better for it - crunchy and slightly herbaceous.
2011 Domaine des Terres Falmet, Vin de Pays d’Oc Mourvèdre
£32
France, Languedoc | Mourvedre
Biodynamic style, old vines and the studious method of
winemaker Yves Falmet suit Mourvedre (intense and occasionally
tempestuous) perfectly. Delicious hot summer red.

2012 Domaine Metrat ‘La Roilette’ Fleurie
£34
OUT / IN
France, Beaujolais | Gamay
A truly delightful Fleurie that can come from the cellar or the

fuller fruit than you would expect. A perfect light red with some
bar plates.
2010 Viano Vineyards, Hillside Cabernet Sauvignon
£34
USA, California | Cabernet Sauvignon
Californian reds are often dismissed as being too expensive and
too oaky- this is neither. Fresh fruit and the soft-punch of ripe
Cab Sauv. A very welcome new addition to the list.
2008 Château Carignan Premieres Cotes Bordeaux £36
France, Bordeaux | Bordeaux Blend
Textbook ‘claret’ and unapologetically old-school. Delicious with
meat or charcuterie and at a sensible price.
2011 Clos Ouvert “Huasa”
£39
Chile, Maule | Pais
A different Chilean red - using a local grape in a very pure valley
protected by the Pacific and the Andes. Robust and fruity.
2013 Sébastien Bobinet Saumur-Champigny ‘Hanami’

Ideal saline and strawberry cab franc from one of our favourite
producers in the Loire, No sulphur, lots of flavour.
2013 Cascina Tajvine ‘Ruche’
£41

Not a grape you see often, ruche, is more more floral than some
Piedmontese reds. Very savoury though too. Friend of meat.
2012 Cantina Giardino ‘Le Fole’ £43
Italy, Campania | Aglianco
Lots and lots of bang for your buck here - heady and rich befitting
75 year old wines but the perfect, full freshness of Aglianico.
2010 ‘Côtes de Nuits Villages’ Michel Mallard
£44
France, Burgundy | Pinot Noir
Mike Duck, as we have affectionately named this master of red
Burgundy, makes the kind of consistent, savoury reds you could
drink every night.

BIG, BOLD AND GOOD WITH A CHOP
Here are a few punchy reds sourced from some of the finest red wine producing
regions in the world. None of them possess subtletly, but they are all big, beefy,

game birds etc - and some English cheese if the bottle makes it that far.
2008 Caiarossa ‘Pergolaia’ Toscana
£43
Italy, Tuscany | Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sangiovese
Made by a winemaker from Margaux in the rich soils of the
Tuscan coast, this is a beatifully smooth wine which still manages

Heady, rich but also refreshing this is perfect claret for the price.
2011 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Domaine Pierre Usseglio£59

The raw earthy fruit of the Southern Rhone is harnessed
brilliantly here - very low yields give precise, bold fruit and
incredibly pure CDP..

Italy, Tuscany | Cabernet Sauvignon
A very interesting and delicious old find from Italy - this is a
Turcan homage to Bordeaux planted at altitude and aged in oak
for 18 months.
1998 Vega Sicilia, Alion £94
Spain, Ribera del Duero and Toro | Tempranillo

4 wines from 4 of our favourite winemakers. Their bottles, whatever the vintage,
always seem to express their personality from Alain Chabanon’s dry but
charming merlot to Chris Camarda at Andrew Will and his vines near Seattle surely the world’s finest teetotal winemaker.
2012 Alain Chabanon, Le Petit Merle Aux Alouettes
France, Languedoc | Merlot
This is a very serious wine from a seriously talented winemaker.
All the wild fruit of the Languedoc in the rare guise of merlot.
2009 Domaine Matassa, Vin de Pays des Cotes Catalanes
France, Roussillon | Carignan
Savoury and spicy like all great Carignan this carries with it a
taste of sun-drenched soil it grows on. Meaty natural-ish wine
from two Kiwis high up in the hills of Roussillon.

Australia’s most dynamic winemakers
1997 R. López de Heredia Rioja Reserva Viña Tondonia
Spain, Rioja | Tempranillo, Garnacha, Mazuelo
From the kings of Rioja, LdH’s Vina Tondonia is perennially

TWO EXCELLENT BORDEAUX
Winter is a time for claret and should you feel like pushing the boat out here
are 2 that are on fantastic form and well worth treating yourself too. All from
chateaux that, whilst not forgetting the basics, look to a more, modern clean
style.
2007 Domaine de ChevalIer Pessac Léognan France, Bordeaux | Bordeaux Blend
A wonderful Bordeaux from a favourite of ours who always
manage to produce rich, silky and savoury wines perfect for
lots of our food. Dry and long on the finish. A treat for Bordeaux
fans from an estate often associated with putting flavour and
moreishness above the importance of tannin and structure.
These are wines for the table not the cellar and something which
would go well with anything on our butchers’ board.
2003 Chateau Sociando-Mallet Haut-Medoc
France, Bordeaux | Bordeaux Blend
All the cigar-box tannins you would expect from a 2003
but lighter and more ready than most. Very fresh fruit and
remarkable refreshing for something from a famously hot
and unforgiving vintage. This has taken from the baking hot
summer months of 2003 an almost sultry quality which balances
nicely with Socaindo-Mallet’s trademark commitment to being
refresing and delicious above all else.
£94
2002 Domaine Robert Arnoux Chambolle-Musigny, Cotes de Nuits
France, Burgundy | Pinot Noir
A real testament to the art of winemaking and one for pinot
purists - Pascal Lachaux uses no fining or filtering to create very
polished, special wines. A gem from a pinot genius. Just a couple
left but well worth grabbing one while you can, this is a very
cerebral slice of Burgundy and a nice contrast to more modern
styles of pinot found elsewere on this list.

1994 Clos de l’Obac, Costers del Siurano
£135
Spain, Priorat | Garnacha, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot, Cariñena
A stunning Priorat from a noble estate - ageing nicely and at its
peak now - a perfect expression of this recently-discovered but
now universally-admired corner of Spain. A very decent price
given you can drink the inferior ‘96 in Mayfair for £300. Very
limited stock.
1999 Maison Vincent Girardin Chambolle-Musigny ‘Les Cras’ 1er Cru £140
France, Burgundy | Pinot Noir
Dark, forest fruit from a rare bottling by Girardin. This has a
longer finish than you might expect and a nice tussle between
acidity and ripe, almost jammy fruit. Great balance.

1966 Chateau Troplong Mondot, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru
France, Bordeaux | Bordeaux Blend
This is a very nice old claret from the hill over-looking SaintEmilion. Not tired or flat but firm. From a fastidious collector and
well-cellared, this is something of a treat if aged claret is your
thing. Try with hard cheese.
1979 Charles Joguet Chinon Cuvée du Clos de la Dioterie
France, Loire | Cabernet Franc
A legend in the Loire, we’re not sure there are many bottles of
this left, so when we found them we took all 4 of them. When you
pull the cork, it smells of a perfect freshly-mown lawn but as the
bottle is poured it manages to keep almost all of its weight and
could go nicely with any fish or even light red meat. Herbaceous,
savoury and soft but incredibly fresh still this is incredibly special
if the Loire is your thing.
1996 Dom de la Mordorée Cuvée de la Reine des Bois Chneuf-du-Pape
France, Rhone | Southern Rhone Blend
A brilliant CDP from a vintage whose time has come - lovely
secondary notes of dark chocolate and warm, punchy grenache
fruit gives this a kind of complexity married with freshness which
you only really get from aged Rhone reds. One of the finest wines
we’ve had on any of our lists.

CHAMPAGNE
2001 Gaja ‘Sperss’ Langhe
Italy, Piedmont | Nebbiolo
A forceful and almost spicy nebbiolo from the masters of
Piedmontese red. Possesses the intensity that is Gaja’s
trademark but with some of its initial zeal worn off - this is richly
rewarding for ‘Gaja-nerds’ but also anyone who loves their
nebbiolo on the spicier, more vivacious side.
2000 Chateau Tertre Roteboeuf St-Émilion
France, Bordeaux | Bordeaux Blend
A great Bordeaux precisely because of its distinctly unBordeauxy characteristics. This is rich and ripe and ready - with
an intese black fruit and tannins which seem so fully integrated
you could almost call it Burgundian (if that wasn’t heresy). This
will keep evolving a long while after being decanted.
1982 Chateau Mouton Rothschild Pauillac
France, Bordeaux | Bordeaux Blend
Juicy, fragrant and still light on the finish. This was the sixtieth
harvest at Mouton Rothschild - each bottle celebrates the
auspicious vintage with a watercolour label depicting ‘dionysiac
joy’. What’s inside should continue the theme. It is said its
spiciness brings to mind the immortal 1961 vintage but sadly
inexperience of such wine prevents us from commenting on that.
Either way it has a glorious sweetness which develops hours after
opening in the way that only great wines from this part of the
world can.
£180
N.V Pol Roger ‘Extra Brut’ £155
France, Champagne | Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, Chardonnay
Not many more stylish ways to celebrate with a big group. This is
not as sweet as some Pol.

2012 Mylene Bru ‘Lady Chasselas’ France, Languedoc | Chasselas
In the mountains above Sete, Mylene Bru makes this firm and
herb-y white from a grape more at home in the Savoie. The wild
terrain suits it - lots of fennel on the palate and best with food.
2010 Kumeu River ‘Coddington Chardonnay’
New Zealand, Kumeu | Chardonnay
Rich, full and ripe - this is stunning new world Chardonnay from
one of its greatest exponents in New Zealand.

2010 Chateau Villa Bel-Air Graves
France, Bordeaux | Bordeaux Blend
This is a very solid and jolly bordeaux, bursting with fruit and oak
in just the right quantities. Only a couple left but lovely while it
lasts.
1999 Chateau Senejac Haut-Medoc
France, Bordeaux | Bordeaux Blend
Fantastic value from an estate with real pedigree (these are the
people responsible for Pontet-Canet) this deilvers soft, rich,
luscious claret with a nice amount of age.
2008 Villa Bellini Valpolicella Italy, Veneto | Corvina, Corvinone, Molinara, Rondinella
Lovely, dry valpolicella fruit from a new type of Italian producer.
2010 St Joseph, L’Amarybelle, Domaine Yves Cuilleron
France, Rhone | Syrah
One of our favourite and most consistent winemakers - this is his
finest red cuvee in our opinion. Opening up now, full and refeshing
this is a really lovely magnum.

2013 Ca’ D’Gal Moscato D’Asti Lumine £34
Italy, Piedmont | Moscato Bianco
This is a great bottle of moscato from a fine producer of Barolo.
Oranges and peach on the palate and a gentle fizz - very good
on its own or with fruity/creamy dessert.
2007 Domaine Zind Humbrecht, Pinot Gris Clos Windsbuhl HALF
£37
France, Alsace | Pinot Gris
Chock full of fruit - perfect with fruity desserts or even some of
our rich first coures - this is one of our favourite sweet wines in
the world.
2008 Bentomiz ‘Ariyanas Naturalmente Dulce’ HALF £37
Spain, Malaga | Moscatel
Naturally sweet and grown at altitude giving it a freshness to
pick you up, rather than weigh you down, this has never left the
list since we tasted it the day we opened.
2004 Château Raymond-Lafon Sauternes HALF
£39
France, Bordeaux | Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon
Far fresher than many a 10-year old sauternes, this tastes like a
lovely apple tart. Rich but never too sweet.
2008 Ezio Cerruti, Sol HALF
£51
Italy, Piedmont | Moscato Bianco
Rare to find sweet wines which make you think but this does
- sweet but clean and fresh. A variety of the ancient muscat
grape, this is one of the most under-rated sweets..
1936 Château Sisqueille ‘Rivesaltes’
£109
France, Roussillon | Grenache Blanc/Noir Blend
A seriously lovely ‘Vin Doux Naturel’ - concentrated citrus
flavour but still quite light and fun for something 78 years old.
Will last 2 weeks open – keep the cork and take the rest home if
you’d like.
1939 Domaine Pla Del Fount ‘Maury’
£119
France, Roussillon | Grenache Noir
From a now extinct estate inland from Rivesaltes, this is the
colour of treacle and tastes like it too. Intensely sticky and sweet
but not lacking in complexity.

PORT
NV Niepoort “Ruby Dum’ and ‘Tawny Dee’ HALF
£25/£7 a glass (100ml)
Nieport ports are made in a very modern style with an
emphasis on fruit and freshness. The Ruby Dum is more
youthful and perfect with a lighter dessert. Tawny Dee is ideal
with a plate of cheese.

DIGESTIF
Cognac - Ragnaud Sabourin VSOP
A ‘boutique’ cognac from a small producer, made exclusively using
grapes from the premier Grande Champagne designation.
Calvados - Dupont’Pays D’Auge’
Made from 80 per cent bittersweet apples and 20 per cent acid
apples, this is aged for 6 years and they claim it has a ‘sweet
attack’
Poire Williams - ‘Artisanale Goutte’ Laurent Cazottes We are a bit obsessed with Laurent Cazottes and his Poire
William. Nothing too forceful or aggressive - just beautifully
smooth, precise fruit.

Very traditional grappa made with a gentle hand by this master
distiller who produces grappas of real freshness.

candied fruit peel flavour.
Bas-Armagnac - Chateau de Lacaze Vintage 1984
Stunning old-school armagnac from a single domaine - a rare
opportunity to try a beautifully aged digestif.
Bas-Armagnac - Domaine de Pinas 1972
One for armagnac afficianados - this has incredible complexity
and depth of flavour, from a wonderful single-vintage cru.
Bas-Armagnac - Chateau de Gaube 1964
Hand-selected by the Darroze family, this is truly exceptional.
Beatiful tawny colour and rich nutty, quince flavour.
