Choosing Safety Eyewear
When choosing the safety eyewear which is best
suited to day-to-day and task specific requirements,
the following information will be useful: the eyewear
should be marked with a standard code (BSEN:166);
each number represents a test which the product
has been subjected to. Every effort must always be
made to remove the hazards identified, at source,
as the result of a Workplace Risk Assessment;
however, where safety eyewear and task specific
eyewear (e.g. goggles) are necessary, the following
items should be considered:

Types of Eye Hazard
Hazards fall into 4 main categories:
Mechanical – Flying debris, dust or molten metal.
Chemical – Fumes, gases or liquid splash.
Radiation – Heat (Infrared), Ultraviolet light or glare.
Laser Light – Over a wide spectrum of wavelengths
from Ultraviolet to Infrared.
Type of Protection
Safety Spectacles – Safety spectacles are intended
to protect against low energy impact from flying
debris and objects. They will not keep out
concentrations of dust or airborne particles.

Safety Goggles – safety goggles will offer protection
against medium energy impact and high levels of
explosive force. They must be used to protect against
dust, airborne particles and gas
Safety Faceshields – a full face visor offers a wide
area of protection against flying particles and
chemical splash. They also remain mist free through
rapid temperature changes.
