Caroline Amali Okao hands over a plaque and cheque worth UGX 15M to the Platinum winner - Fr. Vincent Tumwebaze C itibank Uganda Limited together with The Association of Microfinance Institutions in Uganda (AMFIU) would like to congratulate all the winners of the 2013 Citi Microentrepreneurship Awards. The awards that started in 2006 and funded by the Citi Foundation, promote the effective role that microfinance plays in poverty alleviation. In the past 7 years, Citi has committed more than USD 500,000 to micro enterprise development in Uganda In Uganda the awards are organized annually by Citibank Uganda Limited in partnership with The Association of Microfinance Institutions in Uganda (AMFIU) to raise awareness about the importance of Microentrepreneurship and microfinance in supporting the financial inclusion and economic empowerment of low-income individuals. The program also seeks to recognize the extraordinary contributions that individual microentrepreneurs have made to the economic sustainability of their families as well as their communities. This year, the awards ceremony was presided over by the Minister of State for Microfinance, Hon. Caroline Amali Okao. A total of Uganda shillings 70,000,000 was given out to 35 microentrepreneurs. The microentrepreneurs were selected from clients of MDIs, MFIs and SACCOs who had exhibited excellence in areas of business growth, employment creation, sustainability, innovation and their impact to their families and communities. It included women, youth & persons with disability. The categories included the overall Platinum winner, a Gold winner, a silver winner and several bronze winners. Each of them took home a cash prize and a plaque. Other winners were given certificates and cash prizes. The Platinum winner was Fr. Tumwebaze Vincent who was awarded UGX 15 Million. He runs a women and youth empowerment development foundation that supports them to make small savings and engage in income generating activities. Many of the AMFIU Executive Director - Mr. David Baguma hands over a plaque and cheque worth UGX 4M to the Persons with disability (PWD) winner - David Sajjabi Citibank Uganda Ltd Managing Director - Chinedu Ikwudinma hands over a plaque and cheque worth UGX 10M to the Gold winner - Solomon Amanyabyona women have been supported to grow beet-root and in the first season earned over sixty five million shillings. Some of the unemployed women have formed a very successful crafts group while the girls dropping out of school are trained in tailoring and supported to be self employed. A health centre which was started as a maternity to assist poor mothers has been expanded into a fully fledged medical facility with inpatient facilities. He also runs a supermarket, bakery and a modern girl’s school. The Gold winner was Amanyabyona Solomon who was awarded UGX 10 Million, a youth and a civil engineering graduate who decided to venture into private business rather than seek employment. He set up a modern carpentry workshop that also makes pool tables. He has expanded his business to include grain milling and a hardware shop. The Silver winner was Margret Onyot who was awarded UGX 7.5 Million, a woman who overcame many challenges to build a health facility that provides a very essential health service to the rural community of Kaliro. Upon completing her course in midwifery in Northern Uganda, she was forced to relocate to Kaliro because of the war. She started by earning 80,000, but she was determined to start up her own business clinic. Today she runs Dr. Ambrosoli memorial health care centre that screens cervical cancer patients. The best Person with disability (PWD) entrepreneur was Sajjabi David who was awarded a cash prize of UGX 4 Million. He excelled in developing leather products which he operates in 3 branches. He demonstrated that disability is not inability by using his loans prudently to produce a wide range of leather products that are in demand and are affordable. He has trained many school dropouts which has enabled them to start their own enterprises. He has become a role model in the community The bronze winners were 11 in number and each was awarded UGX 2 Million. The next category of winners were awarded a certificate each accompanied by a cash prize of UGX 550,000.
