Volume 3 Issue 3 December NEWS 2014 R.E.A.C.S NEWSLETTER Principal’s Message Dear Parents, As the year quickly comes to an end and the holiday season is upon us, The Rochdale Early Advantage School community wish you a wonderful and happy holiday season and a prosperous New Year in 2015. I hope that you have picked up your tickets for the school-wide Holiday Presentation. The students are excited and looking forward to performing for their family and friends. The Presentation will be held on th Friday, December 19 , 2014 at 6:30 p.m. at the York College Performing Arts Center. All students must arrive at 5:30 p.m. in order to prepare for the presentation. The Holiday packets are being prepared and the teachers will disseminate them to their students beginning Friday, December 19, 2014. If you have any questions regarding the homework assignments or the holiday packets, please contact your child’s teacher. Please make sure that your child completes their assignments during the holiday break. In addition, Friday, December 19th, is Professional Development for our teachers and students will be dismissed at 12:00 p.m. Please pick up or arrange for your child to be picked up promptly at 12:00 p.m. The holiday break will begin on Wednesday, December 24, 2014 and end Friday, January 2, 2015. Again, we wish you and yours a very safe and enjoyable holiday season and a healthy return in the New Year. Students had to determine which two of the same numbers can make 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10. The students also focused on greater than, less than, and equal using all of the above numbers. Students also learned how to count to ten from any given number. First Grade Literacy– In literacy the first graders are learning to infer as they read. The children should think about what they already know about the information they are reading to build comprehension. Using their prior knowledge will help to fill in missing pieces and understand the text better. Social studies- We focused on important people in our community. The students learned what Veterans Day is and the students wrote letters to our Men and Women in the Military ( Air force, Navy, Marines, Army and Coast Guard) thanking them for all they have done. Writing- Students are writing nonfiction stories. They are writing a how -to book with information based on real-life facts. Literacy -Students learned the five food groups and discussed what foods were healthy vs unhealthy. The students learned to infer and make predictions based on what they’ve already read in the text. The students also reviewed determining importance, picking out the most important parts of a text or story. We learned the letter, keyword and sound for the following letters of the alphabet:/Tt/ /Cc/k/ Math- For the month of No- will begin learning about animals eat food. vember students learned about different subtraction strategies; such as counting back, adding to subtract, make a 10 to subtract and breaking apart to subtract. A large part of November was dedicated to students learning about related facts, which shows the relationship between addition and subtraction facts. Social Studies- Writing- Following the writing process, students will publish their second writing piece which, is a non-fiction unit called “How-To.” Students are to explain in detailed steps, how to do something. Students learned about Election day, Veterans day and Thanksgiving. Students were given the opportunity to put themselves in the seat of a President and express what they would do. They were able to write mock letters to Veterans thanking them for everything they have done. They were also taught the true meaning of the Thanksgiving holiday and they were given the opportunity to think about all of the things they were truly thankful for and why. Science– Students have started their second unit in Science called All About Animals. Students learned about what animals need to live and how Second Grade Science and shelter. This month the second graders are learning about animals and their habitats. They will identify how camouflage helps animals stay safe and explain how animals protect themselves. They will also take a look at how animals use their environment for food Social StudiesIn social Studies the children will learn all about locations. They will use maps to tell directions and describe where they live, naming their community, state, country, and continent. They will continue to explore the world around them! Math: Students will use their understanding of place value and properties of operations to add and subtract. Students will also learn how to solve addition problems with 2-digit addends using different strategies. Writing: Students will continue writing about non-fiction topics. The writing will contain a main idea that focuses on a specific topic and uses strong supporting details. 3 Third Grade Math: This month the 3rd grade classes have been learning multiplication facts. We used Multiplication Properties such as Commutative Property, Associative Property, Identity Property, and Distributive Property as strategies to assist with learning multiplication facts. Science: . The students have completed the first unit which prepares students to be scientist by exploring Life Cycles. We are now moving on to Ecosystems. Literacy: As the year comes to a close, students are continuing to sharpen and perfect their reading and writing skills. They’re expanding their vocabulary both through our Literacy by Design series, and by mastering all of the 3rd grade Dolch high frequency words. They are also continuing to study the all-important conventions of the English language, along with targeted word study applications like long and short vowels, and consonant diagraphs. Writing :In recognition of the Thanksgiving holiday, the students of Class 3-301 wrote and decorated cards that were distributed to residents of the Four Seasons Nursing Home. The cards contained personalized messages and poems the students wrote during their Writing lessons. This gesture was a hit with the residents, many of whom did not see or speak with their children or grandchildren on Thanksgiving. Yolanda Scott, the Recreation Director at Four Seasons, warmly received the cards and wanted to thank R.E.A.C.S. and Class 3-301 for their engagement with the elderly community and bringing joy to the residents' holiday. Social Studies :Canada is where our 3rd graders will figuratively travel to next. Canada is the largest country in the North America – that means it’s even larger than the United States. Students will be learning many other fascinating things about Canada, including the history of its indigenous people, the Inuit, its breathtaking landscape, and its political structure. Fourth Grade Literacy - Students have been learning how to use inferencing as a strategy while reading. Students are learning to summarize reading passages. Students have also been learning to recognize different types of reference materials. Math - Students have been learning how to multiply two digit numbers They have been learning more about factors and multiples. Students are also continuing to learn how to memorize multiplication and addition facts. Science - Students have been learning about how animals are different from one another. They are learning about the basic needs and characteristics of animals . They are also learning to summarize the characteristics of groups of invertebrates. Social Studies – –Students have been learning to identify the importance of historical facts while reading. They are learning about the genre of historical fiction. They are also learning about the geographical features in New York State. Writing – Students have been learning how to apply their knowledge of the writing process across all subjects. They had to use the writing process to produce cohesive paragraphs in all subjects. Fifth Grade Literacy: Classes have been engaging in various texts about sound waves. Students enjoyed reading about Duke Ellington’s journey in becoming a famous bandleader. Within this unit, the students also learned about several types of reference materials. Math-This month the students have been expanding their knowledge of working with decimals. They have solved mathematical problems involving adding, subtracting, and multiplying decimal numbers. The students have enjoyed engaging in the various lessons of decimal numbers. Science- We just finished a unit about reproduction, and heredity in science. The students participated in various labs to further their understanding of the topics. The students tasted ptc paper to identify if they had the dominant or recessive gene. In addition, the students determined specific traits they inherited based on physical characteristics. Social Studies- In social studies, the classes are completing a unit about the first English settlements in North America. The students have learned about the various explorers that discovered different parts regions of North America. Writing- we just completed our unit on procedural texts. The students wrote procedural texts on recipes they knew, or skills they have mastered. We are now starting a non-fiction writing unit. The students have chosen various types of animals to research. Being able to work with different people and their personalities. * Fairness, Honesty, Respect, Responsibility, Citizenship, and being trustworthy can all be incorporated into different activities. Incorporating math and literacy into physical education MANDARIN Ms. Zhang Gr. K-2 Students have mastered the number poems and the two paragraphs of the Chinese Class Song in Mandarin. They can express their appreciation for their family members, teachers and friends in the community. They've had a lot of fun making their favorite Thank-you Tree. Gr. 3-5 In addition to express their appreciation for their family members, teachers and friends in the community, students also followed conversations and understand messages that concern everyday life and the larger society. Students began to learn the chorus for Jingle Bells in Mandarin. They also explored the major cities in China and identified two most famous rivers through the Map of China. 5 Career & Technology Ms. Banna Happy December to all! Students in Kindergarten had a great time sharing their “All about Me” book and in the process learned lot about each other. The students have now started sharing their “Me Bags” in class. Over the next several days, students will take turns sharing their bags with the class and talking a bit about themselves. This activity will not only further help students learn important information about each other, it will also help them practice essential skills such as public speaking, listening, and staying focused. Thank you to all the parents for responding so promptly to the “Me Bags” instructions! The students are doing an excellent job sharing their bags! The First Graders will continue to work on the unit of Community Helpers. This month our focus is on teachers and letter carriers. Our friends are continuing to work in groups and utilize the “CAN-AREHAVE” chart to sort out data and information as we go over each type of community helper. They will also utilize laptops this month to create their own “CAN-ARE-HAVE” charts in Microsoft Word to harness their learning. The Second, Third, Fourth, and Fifth Grade classes have now started their work on a 3 step activity called “Me in the Future” which will take place over the next couple of days. In this activity, students will understand the meaning and importance of being a successful professional in the future. Their task is to imagine themselves as people who are successful and competent in the future. Students will think about what they would be if they could be anything, or do anything they wanted, when they grow up. Class discusses what students can do and what skills are important to become the type of people they have identified. Students will then illustrate and write a story called “Me in 20 Years.” Students will use a laptop to type the final draft of their story in class. As a result, a lesson on computer/laptop usage and internet safety will be incorporated as an extension to this activity. All grades will continue to learn about the importance of jobs and the concept that personal responsibility as well as good work habits is expected from them in school and ultimately in any career that they enter. 6 Mr. Dunlap Assistant Principal Instruction Students are actively engaged in learning throughout the day. Teachers are teaching across curriculum and assessing student learning every day. Classrooms are full of student work and projects. Discipline Students continue to be held accountable for their actions daily. Students are working on their behavior and actions on the buses. There was a bus meeting held for all students who ride the morning and or afternoon bus, which focused on the following areas: Making good choices Being in their seat at all times Keeping seatbelt on at all times Keeping hands and feet to themselves Parents please continue to be supportive with staff as they work hard trying to hold students accountable for their actions. It is very important that we receive support from you. Spotlight- 4th and 5th grade students were invited to a college basketball game between St. Johns University and Niagara University on December 2nd at 7pm. The total number of students that showed up was 32, and a number of parents were there as well.
