But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah,
who are too little to be among the clans of Judah,
from you shall come forth for me
one who is to be ruler in Israel,
whose coming forth is from of old,
from ancient days.
3
Therefore he shall give them up until the time
when she who is in labor has given birth;
then the rest of his brothers shall return
to the people of Israel.
4
And he shall stand and shepherd his flock in the strength of the Lord,
in the majesty of the name of the Lord his God.
And they shall dwell secure, for now he shall be great
to the ends of the earth.
5
And he shall be their peace.
2
Celebration – Matthew 2:1-6
Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from
the east came to Jerusalem, 2 saying, “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star
when it rose and have come to worship him.” 3 When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all
Jerusalem with him; 4 and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them
where the Christ was to be born. 5 They told him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for so it is written by the prophet:
6
“‘And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,
are by no means least among the rulers of Judah;
for from you shall come a ruler
who will shepherd my people Israel.’”

Anticipation – Revelation 7:13-17
Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’” 8 Again, the
devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. 9
And he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” 10 Then Jesus said to
him, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written,
“‘You shall worship the Lord your God
and him only shall you serve.’”
11
Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and were ministering to him.
12
Now when he heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew into Galilee. 13 And leaving Nazareth
he went and lived in Capernaum by the sea, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali, 14 so that what was
spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled:
Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, “Who are these, clothed in white robes, and from where
have they come?” 14 I said to him, “Sir, you know.” And he said to me, “These are the ones coming out
of the great tribulation. They have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.
15
“Therefore they are before the throne of God,
and serve him day and night in his temple;
and he who sits on the throne will shelter them with his presence.
16
They shall hunger no more, neither thirst anymore;
the sun shall not strike them,
nor any scorching heat.
17
For the Lamb in the midst of the throne will be their shepherd,
and he will guide them to springs of living water,
and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.”
13
Prayer of Invocation
We pray celebrating God’s promise to bless us with his presence as we worship him.
7
“The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali,
the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles—
16
the people dwelling in darkness
have seen a great light,
and for those dwelling in the region and shadow of death,
on them a light has dawned.”
17
From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”

Of the Father’s Love Begotten ~~Hymnal #162
The Word of God
The Bible is the very word of God, and through it God continues to speak to his people.
Ruling Elder Marty Rabenhorst
Gospel Reading
Matthew 4:1-17
Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. 2 And after fasting forty
days and forty nights, he was hungry. 3 And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God,
command these stones to become loaves of bread.” 4 But he answered, “It is written,
1
“‘Man shall not live by bread alone,
but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”
5
Then the devil took him to the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple 6 and said to him, “If
you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written,
“‘He will command his angels concerning you,’
and
“‘On their hands they will bear you up,
lest you strike your foot against a stone.’”
Revelation 21:22-22:7
And I saw no temple in the city, for its temple is the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb. 23 And the
city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb.
24
By its light will the nations walk, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it, 25 and its gates will
never be shut by day—and there will be no night there. 26 They will bring into it the glory and the honor of
the nations. 27 But nothing unclean will ever enter it, nor anyone who does what is detestable or false, but
only those who are written in the Lamb’s book of life.
21:22
Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God
and of the Lamb 2 through the middle of the street of the city; also, on either side of the river, the tree of
life with its twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit each month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing
of the nations. 3 No longer will there be anything accursed, but the throne of God and of the Lamb will
be in it, and his servants will worship him. 4 They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads.
5
And night will be no more. They will need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light,
and they will reign forever and ever.
22:1
And he said to me, “These words are trustworthy and true. And the Lord, the God of the spirits of the
prophets, has sent his angel to show his servants what must soon take place.”
6
7
“And behold, I am coming soon. Blessed is the one who keeps the words of the prophecy of this book.”

God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen
Reception of New Members and
The Sacrament of Baptism
All that is promised in the gospel, forgiveness, reconciliation, peace, hope, and new life, are here represented in the water of baptism. In
baptism, God makes people members of his family, and gives them a tangible sign of his grace to them in Christ Jesus.
Thao, Huong and Thanh Phung
Morning Prayer
God invites his people be a part of his working in the world as they pray to him. We intercede on behalf of each other and our community, presenting our requests to God, and looking forward with expectant hearts to how he will answer in his time and in his way.
Giving Our Gifts to the Lord
All we are and all we have comes from God. We acknowledge God’s goodness in his provision for us by returning to him a portion
of what he has given to us.
Musical Offering
Celebrate the Dawn, Alleluia! ~~ Traditional English carol; Arranged by Joseph M and Mary Martin
The Wallace Choir
Directed by Dr. Larry Ink
Celebrate the dawn of a blessed new morn,
for on this day our Messiah is born.
Gone are the shadows, the darkness of night.
Celebrate the dawn, come, celebrate life!
Celebrate the dawn of this glorious day,
welcome the Son that will show us the way.
Sing all ye daughters and sons of the light.
Celebrate the dawn, come celebrate life!
Night has gone! All creation sing as one.
God has spoken into our darkness.
Come and rejoice, the Messiah is born.
Come and rejoice alleluia! Sing an alleluia!
Celebrate the dawn our hope is restored.
O peace evermore. Singing forever, come dance in the light!
Celebrate the dawn, come, celebrate life!
Christmas morn all Christians sing, to share the news of the newborn King!
News of great joy, news of great mirth, news of our merciful King’s birth.
Celebrate the dawn! Alleluia!
2014 Lorenz Publishing Company
God rest ye merry, gentlemen,
Let nothing you dismay,
Remember Christ our Savior
Was born on Christmas Day,
To save us all from Satan’s pow’r,
When we were gone a-stray;
O tidings of comfort and joy,
Comfort and joy,
O tidings of comfort and joy.
The shepherds at those tidings
Rejoiced much in mind,
And left their flocks a-feeding
In tempest, storm and wind:
And went to Bethlehem straightway
The Son of God to find.
O tidings of comfort and joy,
Comfort and joy
O tidings of comfort and joy
From God our Heav’nly Father,
A blessed Angel came;
And unto certain shepherds,
Brought tidings of the same:
How that in Bethlehem was born
The Son of God by Name.
O tidings of comfort and joy,
Comfort and joy,
O tidings of comfort and joy.
The message of the angel
One day would be fulfilled,
When on the cross of Calvary
The sinless Christ was killed,
And in three days He rose just as
The Father’s love had willed.
O tidings of comfort and joy,
Comfort and joy,
O tidings of comfort and joy.
“Fear not, then” said the angel,
“Let nothing you afright,
This day is born a Savior
Of a pure Virgin bright,
To free all those who trust in Him
From Satan’s power and might.”
O tidings of comfort and joy,
Comfort and joy,
O tidings of comfort and joy.
So comfort ye my people
Your sins are paid in full
For Christ has made a way for you
Your Father to behold
Now sing his praise and shout for joy
The prophet’s word foretold
O tidings of comfort and joy
Comfort and joy
O tidings of comfort and joy

Scripture
Isaiah 35
The wilderness and the dry land shall be glad;
the desert shall rejoice and blossom like the crocus;
2
it shall blossom abundantly
and rejoice with joy and singing.
The glory of Lebanon shall be given to it,
the majesty of Carmel and Sharon.
They shall see the glory of the lord,
the majesty of our God.
3
Strengthen the weak hands,
and make firm the feeble knees.
4
Say to those who have an anxious heart,
“Be strong; fear not!
Behold, your God
will come with vengeance,
with the recompense of God.
He will come and save you.”
5
Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened,
and the ears of the deaf unstopped;
6
then shall the lame man leap like a deer,
and the tongue of the mute sing for joy.
For waters break forth in the wilderness,
and streams in the desert;
7
the burning sand shall become a pool,
and the thirsty ground springs of water;
in the haunt of jackals, where they lie down,
the grass shall become reeds and rushes.
8
And a highway shall be there,
and it shall be called the Way of Holiness;
the unclean shall not pass over it.
It shall belong to those who walk on the way;
even if they are fools, they shall not go astray.
9
No lion shall be there,
nor shall any ravenous beast come up on it;
they shall not be found there,
but the redeemed shall walk there.
10
And the ransomed of the lord shall return
and come to Zion with singing;
everlasting joy shall be upon their heads;
they shall obtain gladness and joy,
and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.

The Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper
God invites his people to come, taste and touch the gospel. The bread and the wine represent the body and blood of Jesus, who died on
the cross for sinners. At this table, God feeds his people to strengthen their faith, remind them of their hope, and spur them on to love
and good works.
We invite all who repent of their sins, trust in Christ alone for salvation and have been admitted to a
church that preaches the Gospel to join us at the Lord’s Table.
Please hold the elements (the bread and the cup) so we may partake together.
Silent Confession of Sin
Not one of us has lived up to God’s standards. This is not because God’s standards are wrong, but rather because we’re wrong. We’ve
been wrong in how we think, how we act, and what we say. We approach God to acknowledge before him all that is broken and sinful
in our lives.
Assurance of Pardon
Colossians 2:13-15
And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together
with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, 14 by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with
its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross. 15 He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put
them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him.

The Distribution of the Cup
Meditation on “The Sussex Carol” Part 2
As instituted by our Lord, wine is the element used in the Lord’s Supper to show forth his blood shed
on our behalf. (Mark 13:23-25; I Corinthians 10:16; 11:21-22; I Timothy 4:2-3). If, for reasons of
conscience or health, you do not wish to participate using wine, we encourage you to use the grape juice
which is provided for you in the grape colored cups in the center of the communion tray.

Joy to the World! The Lord Is Come ~~ Hymnal #195
Benediction
Just as God had the first word in our worship, he also gets the last word as he sends us out to our homes, work, family, and relationships
with his blessing. God blesses us as his children, to live as sons and daughters of the great King, and as brothers and sisters of Christ,
and therefore, of one another.
