Farewell from Lavonna - the Ukiah Senior Center
The Scoop December 2014 Volume 24 - No 12 THE MONTHLY NEWSLETTER OF THE UKIAH SENIOR CENTER Our Mission The mission of the Ukiah Senior Center is to enhance and improve the quality of life for all Ukiah seniors, their families and caregivers, and to enable seniors to remain as independent as Lavonna Silveria possible for as long as possible. Get in Touch! 499 Leslie Street, Ukiah (707) 462-4343 www.ukiahseniorcenter.org Farewell from Lavonna By Lavonna Schrock, Executive Director The Ukiah Senior Center has been such a wonderful place to work, make a difference and the place I have called home for the last twelve years. But, with all good things there comes a time when a change is in order. I had intended to work at the Center until retirement but an exciting opportunity was placed before me. I will be taking a position at the Mendocino Community Health Clinic. This is a positive career move for me and will allow me to focus on the next chapter in my life. It’s with sadness that I leave such a wonderful group of people. The staff, board, volunteers and I have worked together over the years to make many changes to improve the Center. I’m amazed and so proud of what we have accomplished. I believe in the Ukiah Senior Center and all the valuable services provided. I will continue to be a supporter of the Center and contribute in whatever fashion I am able to do so. I will still be doing the Thanksgiving Dinner which has been serving the community for ten years! If you would like to help with this tradition, please give me a call at 462-4343. The Board of Directors will be accepting applications for the Executive Director position. To see the job description or apply online please go the Ukiah Senior Center website (ukiahseniorcenter.org). USC Spotlight: The lucky winners of the Sedona raffle from last year finally got to enjoy their prize—a week’s stay at the beautiful diamond resort condo in West Sedona, Arizona. Pictured left to right are David Park, Marilyn Gilbreath, Wilma and Roger Howard. Thanks, Jane McMahon, for donating such a wonderful gift! Board of Directors Pay it Forward By David Christmas, Outreach Support Sharon Marshall, President Eula McElrath is from Arkansas and I could listen to her talk for hours. When she arrived in Jason VanHousen, VP California, she brought her wonderful Southern accent along with her. Words seem to drip out Joan Borecky, Secretary of her mouth like honey. Carolyn Welch, Treasurer Bruce Richard, John Walker, Milt Wilson, Millie Hickey, Rosemarie Nelson The first time I met her, she said, “Hi, Hon!” and our friendship grew from there. Over the months as I’ve gotten to know her, she shared with me, in her down-home Southern drawl, that she is one of twelve children who began life on a farm in Arkansas ninety years ago. She grew up working long days with her sisters and brothers on the farm. She tells of a hurricane that once devastated her farm – and how all the neighbors in the area came to help her family rebuild. That’s what neighbors did back then. Admin Staff Lavonna Schrock Executive Director Marilyn DeFrange Admin Support, P/R Debbie Zimmerer Fiscal and Facility Rentals Julie Poole Billing and Fiscal Assistant Theresa Bowers Programs and Outreach Brittany Bowers Programs Assistant Support Lunch Bunch Donna Ford, R.N. Lunch Bunch Director Health Advocate Mary Ann Anderson Lunch Bunch Co-coordinator In the fifties, after hearing that jobs were available in Northern California, Eula, her husband, and daughter drove out here to start a new life. Eula’s husband found work in Redwood Valley and it wasn’t long before they bought a mobile home and settled in near The Forks. There was a small yard and Eula immediately set to work planting a lawn, fruit trees, flowers and, most importantly, a redwood seedling someone had given her. Fifty years later that tree is more than thirty feet tall and marks Eula’s property. She proudly directs you to her home telling you to look for that redwood. You can’t miss it! During one of our conversations, Eula told me she had a problem with the roof; a small area needed patching. So we began working on an application with North Coast Energy Services, hoping they would fix her roof and winterize her mobile home. After we turned in all the paperwork (and the proper attachments), they informed me that they don’t do roofs. Go figure! They told me to “have Ms. McElrath do the roof and we’ll winterize her mobile.” I broke the news to Eula and for the first time I saw something other than her positive self. But as Eula does when things don’t work out, she accepts it with a positive attitude and moves on. With her daughter’s help, the roof got fixed and I called North Coast. North Coast called back and scheduled a time for someone come out. On the appointed date, I went to Eula’s and we met a fellow named Patrick. Patrick began looking around, measuring windows and doors and checking the refrigerator, stove and heater. When he was finished, he told Eula that NC was going to help her with some new windows, doors, a new exhaust fan Outreach and a new refrigerator. As soon as Patrick left, Eula and I grinned at each other. We stood up David Christmas, Outreach Support Then a week or two goes by and I realize I haven’t heard from Eula. I decide to call and see Transportation wrong and she says, “Well, I have something to tell you and I hope you understand and won’t Teresa Furnish, Driver “What?!” I asked. She explained, “I’ve been on a list for a place at Walnut Village for two years Kathy Sheehy, Driver and they called me—out of the blue—to tell me I’m next in line for an apartment.” I paused. I Lea Bouabid, Driver wanted to say, “What about your mobile?” We’d done so much work to get this far. I wanted Heather Haydon, Manager Terry Melvin, Supervisor Thrift and high fived each other and hugged. After weeks of waiting, we were very happy indeed. how she’s doing. As we to talk I realize that Eula sounds tentative. I ask her if anything is be mad.” I said of course I’ll understand. Then she paused and said, “I’m movin, Hon!” to see her mobile all fixed up with the new doors and refrigerator. Then I stopped. I thought, “This is not about you David, it’s about Eula.” Duh! And I realized what a great move this was Cindi Mohr, Manager going to be for her. She moved into her new home in November and she, in turn, is helping Brittany Bowers, her grandson by giving him her mobile to live in. That’s Eula – paying it forward.
