WE ARE GOD’S HOLY FAMILY The scriptures of Israel are filled with many stories of barren couples who were miraculously granted the gift of children by God. Surely the best known among these is the first reading from today, from which Luke took inspiration when he recounted the miraculous birth of John the Baptist to Zechariah and Elizabeth, and the more miraculous birth of Jesus to Mary and Joseph. In each instance, we are given examples or role models of those who trusted in God. More than examples of those who trust, they are models of self-surrender. They abandoned their own presuppositions and prejudices about the workings of the world and turned their lives over to belief in a God who can make life grow where none ought to; a God who can turn death around into a new and unimagined life; a God who can, today, take a tiny child of humble parents in an insignificant town and make him into a light for all the world. This is what we, as God’s holy family, are called to do each day: to trust not in ourselves and the way we think things should be, but to open ourselves and surrender ourselves in faith to a God of endless promise. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. CHILDREN OF ETERNITY You are children of eternity. Your immortal crown awaits you, to reward your duty and love. You may indeed sow here in tears, but you may be sure there to reap in joy. —St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Be it done unto me according to your word.” Docile obedience to the Lord’s will is the fruit of humble prayer. If God is inviting you to a deeper consecration as a priest, deacon, brother or sister, call the Vocation Office at 718-827-2454, or email: vocations@diobrook.org THE ALTAR GUILD The Bread and Wine used at all the Masses this week are in loving memory of John and Mary Kane requested by Maureen Kane. The donation, in the amount of $200.00, will be used to purchase art supplies for school wide use. Thank you to Ann Walsh for presenting the check to the school on December 12th. We are most grateful for their continued support. Enjoy the Christmas vacation and see you on Monday, January 5, 2015 when classes resume. Looking ahead- The Elizabeth Ann Seton Volunteers are planning a Dress Down Day Fundraiser on Thursday, January 8th. The proceeds will benefit the Cherished Feet Foundation. Many thanks to our generous parishioners for their generous support of the school. Happy New Year, everyone! Peace, JoAnn Dolan, Principal Faith Formation I. Religious Education Dear Parents and Guardians: This New Year 2015, you are precious in the eyes of our God and our Church. I hope you will strive to attend to your own faith life, seeking to continue to understand our Catholic Faith and how it can be a rich source of hope and meaning of life. I also encourage you to value the precious gifts of celebrating the Liturgy of the Eucharist each Sunday with your parish community. For 2000 years this liturgy, our Mass, has been the core Christian act, the centerpiece for life as the Body of Christ, the Church. Liturgy is as much who we are as Catholics as what we do. It is, since the time of the apostles, where we have come to be fed in Word, Sacrament and Community. It is where we not only give worship to God and obey Christ’s command to “do this in memory of me” (Lc. 22:19), but also where we nourish ourselves and support one another for the remarkable and ordinary challenges of living the week ahead. Eucharist is our food for the journey. May the Eucharist strengthen you and your family in His love, so that you may join in the mission of the Catholic Church to transform our world into God’s reign, a place where justice and peace and love abound! PELLEGRINI, SJ I want to thank you so much for the invitation to be back with you at St. Sebastian's this evening. I feel humbled and honored and grateful that you thought to include me again to serve your community. I was with such good people tonight. They gave up time and convenience to come to try to deepen their relationship with the Lord. They are a sign of God working to be born again into the world. Tonight was a little bit of Christmas for me. They made God's birth and desire to be "God-with-us" very real, right there, in real people's lives, in their world. Please thank them for me. They gave me a great gift this evening. Peace, Fr. Fred Pellegrini SJ JOIN IN THE FEAST AS WE CELEBRATE OUR PATRON SAINT If you look for Me at Christmas, You won’t need a special star – I’m no longer just in Bethlehem, I’m right there where you are. You may not be aware of Me Amid the celebrations – You’ll have to look beyond the stores And all the decorations. But if you take a moment from your list of things to do, And listen to your heart, you’ll find I’m waiting there for you. You’re the one I want to be with, You’re the reason that I came, And you’ll find me in the stillness As I’m whispering your name. SEBASTIAN WELCOME RETURNING CATHOLICS! We are a safe forum for you as you explore your relationship with God and the Church. Call Pastoral Outreach at 718-899-3341 ext. 143 to see if the Landings is right for you. Coming Home may be easier than you think. Nearly 500 years ago, St Ignatius of Loyola taught a way of praying that led to an intimate encounter with the Living God. This method became known as The First Spiritual Exercises. These Exercises were created to help a person ask for and receive inner peace and enter into a deeper relationship with God. You too can experience the Lord in this rich and timeless way of praying, sacred listening and spiritual conversation. More information will follow. Please RSVP by calling 718-899-3341 X 143.
