President's Message
December: A Month of Celebrations
Canada is a country of people from many places in the world who have
contributed their knowledge and skills toward building a strong nation. Many
faiths and cultures celebrate during the month of December.....Christmas,
Hanukah, Diwali, Kwanzaa.....while different traditions can enrich our
understandings of our diverse world, there are commonalities among these
celebrations. There is an emphasis on getting together with family and
friends, exchange of gifts, holiday feasts, lighting candles to symbolize at the beginning of
winter the triumph of light over darkness. While there is obviously much diversity in the world,
there is much that binds us together.
I'm sure each of you has family traditions to be followed each year.....or as we grow older,
perhaps modified. December always seems like a busy month:
•
baking Christmas cookies as my mother did (although I do ask myself if I really need to
do this or at least as many as she used to do);
•
deciding whether to put up the Christmas tree or not.....and usually deciding it's still a
good thing to do; maybe doing the decorating of the tree while listening to Stuart
McLean's annual Christmas show on the Vinyl Cafe;
•
sending Christmas cards to friends, especially those you don't see often and yet you
don't want to lose touch with;
•
planning Christmas dinner and wondering who in the family will host this year and
hoping your sister will volunteer!
•
buying gifts and hoping that you will have selected the perfect gift for each person on
your list;
•
finding time to visit with everyone over the holidays.
And on it goes......this is a very special time of year and, on behalf of the Management Team, I
extend our good wishes to each of you for a happy, healthy Christmas season.
We hope to see you at our Christmas Lunch at Tyandaga Golf Club on Monday December 15.

Hi Lites of November 17th General Meeting
Sue Williams introduced John Gauvreau, a long time space science educator. John took us on a
"Tour of the Universe", giving us a fascinating look and insight into all the planets. John shared his
extensive knowledge and showed us photographs taken by the Hubble Space Telescope and others
taken with his own camera and tripod. It was an extremely interesting and enjoyable presentation.

25th Anniversary: A Call for Help!
The 25th Anniversary Committee has been meeting to plan for next year's event. and as you
know, the symbol for a 25th anniversary is silver. We are looking for small silver balls to be part
of our table decorations. If you have been reviewing your Christmas decorations and wondering
what to do with things you no longer use or need and some of those decorations include silver
balls, we would be very happy if you would consider donating them to us. Please don't hesitate to
give us a call, either now or in the new year.
