Ballet San Jose Silicon Valley’s 15 Season inaugurates Bodies of Technology repertory program: an
exploration of dance in the digital age featuring two world premieres by Amy Seiwert and Yuri Zhukov,
plus a return of audience favorite Jessica Lang’s Eighty One…Other highlights include three
masterworks: Theme and Variations by George Balanchine, a Company premier of Fancy Free by
Jerome Robbins and, back by popular demand, Twyla Tharp’s In the Upper Room…The Season also
features two story ballets: Family favorite Ben Stevenson’s Cinderella, and the return of Silicon Valley’s
holiday tradition, The Nutcracker by Karen Gabay.
San Jose, CA, August 19, 2014 – Artistic Director, José Manuel Carreño today announced the
2014/2015 Season lineup for Ballet San Jose Silicon Valley (BSJSV). The 15th Season for the
Company features two world premieres by choreographers Amy Seiwert and Yuri Zhukov, as
well as the Company premiere of Fancy Free by Jerome Robbins. Acclaimed works returning to
the stage include In the Upper Room by Twyla Tharp and George Balanchine’s virtuosic Theme
and Variations. Rounding out the Season are two full-length classics and fan favorites, Karen
Gabay’s The Nutcracker and Ben Stevenson’s Cinderella.
Of special note, during the 2014/2015 Season, Ballet San Jose Silicon Valley will inaugurate
Bodies of Technology, an innovative choreographic program that celebrates dance in the digital
age. With performances in March 2015, at the California Theatre in San Jose, this program
brings together artists, musicians, dancers, and technologists to collaborate in new ways of
presenting and viewing dance performance. The Bodies of Technology program will also include
Jessica Lang’s Eighty One, a world premiere for Ballet San Jose Silicon Valley in 2013.
Ballet San Jose Silicon Valley 40 North First Street San Jose, California 95113 T 408 288 2820 F 408 993 9570 balletsj.org “I’m excited to celebrate my second season with Ballet San Jose Silicon Valley by presenting
the work of both cutting-edge choreographers and those who have inspired audiences for
generations,” says Carreño. “We have George Balanchine, Jerome Robbins, and Twyla Tharp,
plus world premieres by Amy Seiwert and Yuri Zhukov, as well as a wonderful program that
Jessica Lange created for our company in 2013. And of course, we also have the magic of
Cinderella and The Nutcracker. It’s going to be a fantastic season for me, for our dancers, and
for all of our fans and supporters.”

From wearable technology and self-hacking gadgets to live Twitter feeds and Facebook friends,
the line separating ordinary experience from virtual reality is being erased in a digital blur. How
does this growing enmeshment between humans and technology find artistic expression? That
Ballet San Jose Silicon Valley 40 North First Street San Jose, California 95113 T 408 288 2820 F 408 993 9570 balletsj.org question invigorates the Bodies of Technology program – a groundbreaking initiative in which
top-flight choreographers and Ballet San Jose Silicon Valley dancers explore the convergence
of technology with art, music, and movement. This singular program aims to re-shape
performance traditions and create an immersive experience for audience members.
Two world premieres, and a return performance of Jessica Lang’s Eighty One (created for Ballet
San Jose Silicon Valley in the 2013 Season) will comprise this Season’s Bodies of Technology
program, the first of what promises to be an annual event.

A delightful mix of classic storybook elements: a beautiful fairy godmother, a pumpkin turned
into a fine coach, an elaborate palace ball, and one glittering, lost glass slipper. In keeping with
ballet tradition, the men of Ballet San Jose Silicon Valley will dance the coveted roles of the ugly
stepsisters with cross-dressing humor, adding to the romance, comedy, and magic for all ages,
from one to 101.
