Cycling for Watson Children’s Shelter (above) Connie Kirk (right) by Susie Turner, Director Helping Missoula Youth Homes this Christmas A big THANK YOU to all who helped bring Christmas cheer to the kids at Missoula Youth Homes. Cycling for Watson Children’s Shelter On December 18, Skip and Martha Yates challenged 3 PEAK cycling classes to a Jump-A-Thon. They donated $1 for every jump made in the morning cycling classes. Members joined in the donations and raised over $4450 for Watson Children’s Shelter. Thank you Skip and Martha for your giving spirit and thanks to all who cycled and/or donated. Your generosity during the holiday season to Missoula Youth Homes and Watson Children’s Shelter was exceptional and profound. Our deepest gratitude to all of you from The PEAK owners and staff! You will be missed! Connie Kirk has served in our Member Services/Sales department and worn the hat of “party planner” for the past 8 1/2 years. She has a heart of gold and her customer service skills are second to none. Thank you for helping countless members find their way at The PEAK; you will truly by missed by members and staff alike. The Missoula Rural Fire District has challenged PEAK members and staff to the First AnnualStairMaster Climb-A-Thon. Event will take place February 18, at The PEAK; 100% of the donations will go to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Two StairMasters; one for PEAK members and staff who will be matched against a firefighter. Sign up sheets will be available at our Blue Mountain location. Start training today for a great cause! PEAK Winter Junior Open USTA SANCTIONED EVENT Dates: January 23-25, All Day Divisions: Boys & Girls Singles and Doubles in the following age groups, singles; 12, 14, 16 & 18, Mixed Doubles; 14 & 18 Cost: $30/singles/division and $22/ player/division Entry Deadline: Sunday, January 18 UM Practice Schedule Women: Monday-Friday 7-9 am (3 courts) starting January 26 Men: Tuesday-Thursday 2:30-4 pm (3 courts), Friday 4-5:30 pm (3 courts), Saturday & Sunday 2-3:30 pm (3 courts) starting January 18 The University of Montana tennis teams will be more visible starting in January. Their season runs January 18-April 26. They are scheduled to practice 5 days a week, with some Saturday and Sunday practice times during non-travel dates. They will travel frequently on Thursday and Friday. I will post updates of days they will not be practicing to open up additional court time. Deadline for league sign up is Friday, January 16. 15th Annual Red Death Handball Tournament January 23-25 This tournament, in honor of local handball legend Randy “Red Death” Jolliffe, is one of the Northwest’s premier handball tournaments. Zootown Racquetball Tournament January 30-February 1 This annual tournament has divisions for men and women of all ability levels, as well as divisions for juniors and high school players. State Doubles Handball Tournament at The PEAK March 13-15 MIND AND BODY By Stephanie Peabody, Mind and Body Director Linda Sliter, Pilates Instructor In October, I had the opportunity to attend a Pilates workshop How to Work with a Beginning Client in Seattle taught by Jay Grimes, who worked and trained directly with Joseph Pilates. This workshop caught my eye not only for the opportunity to work with a Pilates elder, but because at the PEAK Pilates Studio, we see lots of newcomers. One tidbit I took home from this workshop is how Jay Grimes pointed to a poster listing the ‘Pilates Principles’ – control, precision, breath, centering, concentration and flow. He said “at the very top of this list should be MOVEMENT!” This resonated with me because as FITNESS by Mike Rankin, Downtown Fitness Director Happy New Year! The Fitness Department is here to help you make the most out of 2015. Here are some wonderful positive additions in 2015. New weight room and functional fitness area at Blue Mountain, Spring 2015. This 6,600 square foot state of the art weight room with new Life Fitness and Hammer Strength equipment with a Synergy System as the centerpiece will also have a beautiful functional fitness area for strength training classes and sports performance. Fusionetics Functional Movement Screening software. This program allows trainers to be able to evaluate member’s functional movement patterns and then identify the areas in need of attention. The program then builds individual routines to help correct inefficiencies in movement and avoid common injuries. This new state of the art software is currently being used primarily by the NBA and NFL. We are offering new training packages to simplify and streamline our personal training program. We feel the new packages and options will allow our clients more service and flexibility. Tying a Stronger Knot: Couples workout Group Exercise and Health Coaching tailored for couples, family or friends. Includes a weekly workout and two 45 minute Health Coaching sessions, plus access to all PEAK locations for guest participants. When: Thursday, February 6-March 13 Cost Single: Member $150/Guest $225, Couple: Member $275/Guest $350 CLASS OF THE MONTH Zumba with Kentaro Uchimoto Sunday, 11:25 am12:10 pm Downtown Kentaro’s Zumba classes are exciting and energetic. They consist of an effective workout focusing on core areas including the upper and mid-back, neck and calves. His classes not only consist of Zumba choreography, but modern dance, ballet, jazz, and other types of dance. He believes his classes are a way to bring smiles and motivation to members and help instill their desired long-term fitness results. Kentaro’s interest for Zumba started when he began attending Zumba and Oula classes at the UM Recreation Center. He is currently an English major in Linguistics and minors in Dance and Japanese. As members are gearing up their fitness goals, maintaining their workout schedules, training for triathlons and kids are getting back into lessons and swim team, The PEAK pool will be a very busy place to start off a great New Year! Please keep in mind PEAK Pool & Hot Tub etiquette, as well as class and pool schedules when planning your trip to the pool. Here are a few reminders to help make your pool experience a healthy and safe one: • Dress appropriately. Proper swim wear MUST be worn in the pool & hot tub. No clothes or underwear. Babies and toddlers in diapers MUST wear swim diapers. • Shower. Rinse off before entering pool and hot tub. Showers located in locker rooms and on deck. • No food or drink on deck or in pool. Water only please, in nonglass container. • Use the restroom before entering the pool or hot tub. Especially if accompanying small children. No jumping, diving, or cannon bombs into the pool. • Observe PEAK adult only times. Monday-Thursday 5-7 pm are reserved for members 14 and older, unless the child is enrolled in a PEAK program. • Be courteous to classes and lessons in the pool. They will have priority during these scheduled class times over open and family swimmers. • Pick up after yourself. Do not leave garbage, Band-Aids, hair ties or Kleenex poolside. • No profanity. Keep conversations and comments respectful and clean. • Montana State Law REQUIRES children to be 5 years old to use the hot tub. Follow proper lap swimming etiquette: • If 2 swimmers are in the lane, each takes a side. If 3 or more are sharing the lane, swimmers MUST circle swim • Choose a lane that closely matches your swimming speed • Be courteous of swimmers trying to pass, or when passing your fellow lane swimmers • Be aware of what is going on around you and specifically in your lane • Refrain from walking in the lap lanes •Coached adult lap swim has use of all 3 lanes. Lap swimmers not participating in the PEAK lap swim class must exit the lane when these classes are starting, or when prompted by coach on deck. • Swim Team has all 3 lanes reserved on Monday & Wednesday from 4:30-5:30 pm, and lanes 1 and 2 reserved on Tuesdays, 4:30-5:15 pm. • ABSOLUTELY NO going into the back room (behind the pool). This room is full of mechanical and electrical equipment and the floor gets VERY slippery when wet; this is for your safety. The equipment is locked up and put away specifically for class and instructor use. Entry by members, guests, parents or children is prohibited at all times. No hanging on lane lines or basketball hoop. • Follow PEAK child policy: No children under 14 allowed in the pool area unattended. • Water belts and weights for adult and class use only. This equipment is not designed or safe for child use. • Equipment on blue rack is for public use; please use as intended and put away when you are finished. Free 15-Minute Consults If you have nagging aches and pains, we offer free 15-minute consults to all PEAK members. Alpine’s Dance Specialist On Site at the Nutcracker Free Wellness Program for Alpine Patients. Kristi Moore, Our Dance Medicine specialist was on site at the Garden City Ballet’s production of the Nutcracker to help many dancers with consults, taping, and treatment. Our new Dance Medicine Program is reaching out to dancers in the Missoula Community to help with injury rehabilitation and prevention. We offer dancer specific treatment to help Missoula Dancers continue/return to dance as efficiently as possible. We also offer free consultations for dancers. If you have any questions about our Dance Medicine Program, please contact Kristi Moore, MSPT at our north clinic 406 541-2606. Patients will be guided in the fitness component, basic nutrition, and goal tracking of an overall wellness and weight management program. For details contact your physical therapist or Alpine staff. Alpine Welcomes PT Student for Clinical Rotation Josie Sweeney, a third year physical therapy student at UM, will be completing her final clinical rotation with Samantha Schmidt, PT this semester. With graduation right around the corner, Josie is eager to work in the clinic challenging her skills and knowledge, while assisting others in reaching their optimal movement patterns. Josie obtained her bachelor’s degree in Sport and Exercise Science in 2011 from the University of Northern Colorado. Over the last few years, she has obtained several certifications including Cancer Exercise Specialist and CoreAlign Level 1. She is the Program Coordinator for Fit To Fight, a Missoula non-profit that empowers cancer survivors to improve their quality of life through a program of fitness and health. Josie loves the outdoors and especially enjoys hiking, running, boating, and alpine skiing. EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT Bailey Tolson Employee since 2012 A Graduate of Hellgate High School and UM with a Degree in Health and Human Performance, Bailey has been with The PEAK since 2012. After being a member she decided to become an employee because she loved the people and atmosphere. Working in Member Services/Sales allows her to introduce new members to all the options The PEAK has to offer, as well as helping current members with any questions. She loves helping people start their journey to getting healthy. She understands when someone is trying to rehabilitate from surgery or injuries, as she went through 1 knee and 2 foot surgeries prior to her 21st birthday. After 6 months working at The PEAK, her husband Terrence, was deployed to the Middle East for a year. “I was so thankful to have the support of The PEAK; they have been like a second family to me and I am so grateful. ” Bailey loves to host dinner parties for family and friends in their new home, adding spinach to just about anything; omelets, smoothies, meatballs and hiking with Terrence and Dempsey their 5 year old boxer, named after boxer Jack Dempsey. We are blessed to have Bailey on staff; members and co-workers appreciate her friendly manner and professionalism!Feel free to contact her for membership questions or just stop by and say hello; bailey@peakmissoula. com MEMBER SPOTLIGHT Kristie Ginter Member since 2007 Kristie longed for seasons that changed and people like the ones she grew up with in Fargo, ND. After 14 years of living in Las Vegas, her and her family decided to make Montana their home. Observing genetic health issues within family members and her blood sugar levels reported at 108 mg/dL, in April 2013 she decided it was time to make her health a priority. After eating healthier and exercising for one year she had lowered her blood sugar to a normal level of 70 mg/dL. One way she now maintains a healthy lifestyle is with a Fit Bit she recently received from her supportive husband Rob. Her goal of 10,000 steps every day is achieved by looking for opportunities at work, play, even standing and stepping in place cheering on the Green Bay Packers. A sign hangs in her home “Food is the most abused anxiety drug. Exercise is the most underutilized antidepressant.” After a very stressful year she said “I am most proud of breaking my cycle of turning to food as a safety net”. In 2015 she plans to train for a half marathon. The PEAK will be there cheering her on at the finish line!
