Director’s Welcome
Since the Museum’s founding 35 years ago, SAMA has welcomed more than 10,000
people to its summer Gala. We have replicated circus showmanship, transported
visitors to Paris on one Starry Night, plugged into the energy of Fire & Ice, painted
the Bayou Blue, proudly exhibited our Red, White & Blue, enjoyed an Evening on the
Emerald Isle, sampled Bella Tuscany, partied at both Mardi Gras and Carnival,
experienced the excitement of Lights . . . Camera . . . Gala, gone with the Green theme,
explored the dark continent in our African Odyssey, gave a Salute to Broadway, gambled
on Viva Las Vegas, spent a Night in the Orient, put on our Black Tie & Boots, and other
memorable themes. People still talk about the race horse, the Picasso, exquisite jewelry
pieces, the grand piano, antiques galore, the Rolls Royce automobile and other
noteworthy auction items.
The Gala was introduced over thirty years ago as a SAMA fund-raising program. Over
these many years, the Gala has gained a stellar reputation for its grandeur, fun and
sophistication. Today, the Gala is SAMA’s signature fund-raising program and the key
social event in this region. I have heard it said that “the Gala is the best party in the state.”
This year you’re here to enjoy An Evening in South Beach and I know you will have
a good time. South Beach is electric! The salsa beat is infectious. Sample a specialty
margarita. Crab cakes, conch salad, Cuban steak, Mojo chicken, Mahi Mahi and
other foods will delight your palate. A special live auction should add to the evening’s
excitement.
In consort with the Gala, SAMA-Loretto is pleased to offer a special 35-year anniversary
exhibition of fine art. The Sullivan Family: Legacy Exhibition represents some of the
Museum’s most prestigious works of art. The upper gallery features a unique exhibition
of works by Artists of the Greatest Generation. We invite our Gala guests to visit the
Museum to view these exceptional exhibitions.
The steering committee has worked very hard to make this Gala an enjoyable evening
and I thank each of them for their continued commitment to the Museum. I appreciate
the efforts of the Museum staff in helping to make the Gala a success. I thank SAMA’s
Board of Trustees for supporting the Gala. The Museum is indebted to our table
sponsors, donors, vendors, and everyone else who has donated their talents, time, goods
and services to make this Gala a success.
I truly appreciate the leadership and efforts of our Gala Chair, Renee Parowski, who
worked tirelessly to make this Gala a success. Renee’s personality, patience and
perseverance were the driving force that brought An Evening in South Beach to the
Loretto Museum. Renee is a bundle of energy, a disciplined manager, a kind spirit and a
true friend to the Museum. My sincere thanks to Renee for all that she did to make this
year’s Gala a very special event for everyone in attendance.
Thanks to each of you for supporting the Gala tonight and for the many ways that you
have helped the Museum to do what it does.

Chair’s
Welcome
I would like to welcome all of you to the Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art’s 2011
Gala, “An Evening in South Beach.” It has truly been an honor to serve as Gala
Chair for the past two years. I have been able to meet and interact with so many
incredible people who are extraordinarily talented, creative and vibrant individuals.
The people I have met and all the events that I have attended through SAMA are
memories that I will cherish forever.
The Gala is not only one of the most exciting nights of the year, but it is also one
of the Museum’s most important events. Your generosity tonight and throughout
the year allows SAMA to keep its four locations open to the public free of charge.
It is through your contributions and donations that the Museum is able to provide
world-class exhibitions as well innovative educational programs that serve tens of
thousands of children throughout Bedford, Blair, Cambria, Fayette, Somerset and
Westmoreland counties. With the state budget cuts and decreased funding
available to the arts, it is so important that you realize how much we appreciate all
that you give to SAMA.
As you surely realize, one person cannot do this job alone, so I would like to offer
my sincerest gratitude to those members of the steering committee and the Gala
committee who have selflessly devoted their time and talent to help make this Gala
such a tremendous success. I would like to extend my thanks to the SAMA staff,
and an especially big thanks to Barb Hollander and Sandie Hampton, who were
always there for me when I needed them. I also extend special thanks to the Board
of Trustees and Executive Director Gary Moyer for all their support and hard work.
Unless you have worked with these people behind the scenes, you have no idea
the amount of time that they put into the Museum.
Serving as Gala Chair these last two years has been a most pleasurable
experience and one that I will never forget. Thank you for attending this year’s Gala,
and for all you do to support the Museum throughout the year. Have a great evening
at “South Beach” and enjoy the festivities!

1952 MGT
Kit Car
Replica
Starting Bid:
$1,000
This 1952 MGT kit car replica was built in 1968 on a Volkswagen chasis
and sports a 1600cc four-cylinder Volkswagen engine. The roadster’s
fiberglass body is a bright, fire engine red and boasts a wood dash.
The white vinyl convertible top is in good condition. Radio/CD player
installed. There are a few dings in the car, but it has a current PA
inspection and runs well. A fun summer drive with the top down!
Helen Gorsuch Sculpture
Alphabet Hare
Clay, Glazed, Raku-fired
14”h x 20”w x 16”d
Starting Bid: $500
Inspired by nature, religions, mythology,
classical pottery, and ancient and folk cultures,
Helen Gorsuch’s works are often satirical
comments on human behavior. Put simply,
Gorsuch describes her work as “colorful,
whimsical and fun.” Gorsuch is a selftaught artist, designing and building
by hand a limited number of ceramic
sculptures each year. The exclusivity of
her work, in turn, makes her long list
of honors all the more impressive.
The Live Auction offers Gorsuch’s
Alphabet Hare, a raku-fired sculpture. Raku-fired
anthropomorphic figures are Gorsuch’s specialty, and the method
imparts works with an ancient, spiritual look.
