Volunteering for St Barnabas House – give something back
and gain so much in return
Rosemary Gillard
Bereavement Volunteer
Shaun Dicker
Fleet Maintenance Officer
Did you know patients are never charged for their
care at St Barnabas House and the government funds
less than 25% of our running costs? We therefore rely
heavily on the generosity of the local community and
volunteers.
By becoming a volunteer you can learn new skills,
brush up on your existing ones and be welcomed as
part of our team. We aim to make your volunteering
experience a valuable and rewarding one, because our
volunteers really are the life-blood of our organisation
in so many ways.
There are a wide variety of roles that you can get
involved with. Read on to find out about some roles
we have a particular need for:
Is tinkering with cars is your thing? As a Fleet
Maintenance Volunteer, you will help keep our
minibuses and cars kept in pristine condition and
assist with all the regular safety checks. Our Fleet
Maintenance Officer, Shaun Dicker, is looking for
volunteers to help him on a regular basis for around
four hours per shift. He said, “This is a highly valuable
role as our transport fleet provides vital support to
our patients, enabling them to travel to and from the
hospice, and to our clinical teams caring for patients
in their own homes.”
Do you have a listening ear? Our Bereavement
Volunteers offer support to bereaved family and
friends of patients who have received care at St
Barnabas House. Listening to people and being able to
empathise with them is an important skill.
Rosemary Gillard is one of our Bereavement Visitor
volunteers. She said, “After suffering loss of loved
ones in my life, I approached St Barnabas to offer my
help and was trained as a bereavement visitor. The
training was enjoyable and thought provoking. Now
my volunteering role is underway, I get a great amount

Reception
of satisfaction knowing I can be of help to someone
who is struggling with loss. I meet clients mostly at
home, or sometimes at the hospice, and I thoroughly
enjoy it.”
If you’re looking for more of a hands-on and flexible
role, we need volunteers to work on an ad-hoc basis
to help cover our reception and coffee shop during
bank holidays, and for volunteer holiday and sickness
cover.
One of our fantastic bank volunteers is Doreen
Dunning. She said, “I have great respect for the
wonderful work St Barnabas House does in the
community. I really feel as a volunteer that I’m part of
a special team. I also enjoy the variety of helping out
in various departments when they are short staffed.”
If having direct contact with patients and their
carers in their own homes appeals, then becoming a
Community Companion is a special role that may suit
you. Isolation is a big issue for many people coping
with life-limiting illnesses and their carers. You will be
helping people at a very difficult time in their lives by
providing social and practical support during a weekly
two hour visit. For this role we have two mandatory
training days.
Community Companion, Rita Fellows, a 75 year old
grandmother from Rustington, has been visiting Mr
Arthur Shaw, 88 from East Preston since December
2013. Rita said, “I absolutely love being Arthur’s
Community Companion. He normally just wants to sit
and chat during my visits, which we both look forward
to. He is a wonderful person and has remained very
positive during his illnesses and personal challenges.
“His courage touches everyone he meets. We get on
so well and have a lot of laughter and I have heard
his life story. I have received full training and am
really well supported by the team at St Barnabas

House. I would highly recommend this role to anyone
who is looking for a really rewarding volunteering
opportunity and can spare just two or three hours per
week.”
an application pack.
To find out more about volunteering in other areas,
please visit www.stbh.org.uk/volunteering or call us,
we’d love to hear from you if you’d like to help in any
way.
A variety of days and times are available for the above
roles to suit you.

YS In the Garden
Seeds of change
How many seeds have you eaten today? Probably more than you realise. As a nation, we consume tons of them
every day and whether they are ground to make our bread, mushed to accompany our chips or sprinkled on our
burger bun, seeds play an important role in our diet … as well as in our garden!
Most of the seed heads that were left over from autumn have now fallen over, disintegrated, or been eaten by
hungry birds, so as part of my ‘outdoor housework’ I’m cutting them down to ground level before the new
growth begins to emerge next month. The stately seed heads of Stipa gigantea looked fantastic for such a long
period of time, as did the erect stems of Calamagrostis ‘Karl Forester’, but even these have been defeated by the
wind.
It may be cold outside, but now is the perfect time for planning what to grow this year, from seed of course!
Over recent years the popularity of growing your own vegetables has meant that veg seed sales have overtaken
those of traditional flowers, but you really can’t beat the satisfaction of plants from seed.
The first plants I ever grew were Snap Dragons. I was fifteen, and I found the packet in the back of a drawer
(presumably they had been stuck to a box of cereal at some stage). I diligently followed the instructions for sowing and placed them on top of my wardrobe (I’m not quite sure why I did that). What happened next really was
a miracle. They germinated! It was hard to believe that the old seed, uneven layer of compost, wardrobe location and over watered soil, produced a rash of new seedlings. It wasn’t long before they had grown to around 2
inches high and bent towards the light, narrowly avoiding the artex ceiling!
I potted them on and they produced the most beautiful range of colours all summer long, and that was the moment I became hooked on gardening.
It wasn’t really a surprise that they germinated, as that’s what seeds are designed to do. They can survive in their
dormant state for years, and because there are often more seeds per packet than you know what to do with, I
always sow just a few more than I need and return the rest to a sealed container in the fridge. Stored like this
they keep for years.
To give them the best start in life, most seeds require just a tray of compost and some warmth. Large seeds
should be covered over with compost, but small seeds left uncovered as they often don’t have enough energy to
push new leaves through the soil. Prick out singly once large enough to handle and grow on somewhere frostfree, before gradually hardening off ready for life outdoors.
Until next time, happy winter gardening.

YS Book Reviews
Book Reviews
Great reads for January
Bodies of Light by Sarah Moss
Pub Granta £7.99
Ally and her sister May don’t do many
of the things that girls of their class
do. Instead of learning to embroider,
or play the piano, they learn plain
cooking and sewing, Latin and Greek.
And when they are old enough, they
accompany their Mamma – herself
daughter to a stern, evangelical
Mamma - to her Home for the poorest and most degraded
women of the Manchester working districts and slums,
for she is determined that her girls will be useful and
conscientious members of society. Ally, in particular, must
work especially hard, for she is destined to be one of the
first qualified female doctors, and must guard against her
tendency to nerves and hysteria, or her Mamma will be
displeased…
Written in spare, poetic prose which renders the historical
detail clear and fresh, this is a novel which illuminates the
difficulties faced by women, both these particular women
at this particular point in history, and issues common
to many women through time. It is also an exploration
into dynamics within a family, of motherhood and its
difficulties and dysfunctions, and the legacies bequeathed
from one generation to the next.
involving human interest story. Scarlet Ibis is the powerful
story of young Scarlet who, with her autistic younger
brother Red, dreams of a visit to Trinidad to see the
beautiful Scarlet Ibis, and, after an accident which parts
her from him, struggles to reunite her family.
Suitable for children aged 10 upwards.
House Held Up By Trees by
Ted Kooser and Jon Klassen
Walker Books £6.99
Written by the Pulitzer
Award winning poet Ted
Kooser and illustrated in
Jon Klassen’s distinctive
style, this haunting picture
book charts the effect of the
passing of time and the power of nature on a house and
the family who live in it. Lovely.
Abbattoir Blues by Peter Robinson
Pub Hodder and Stoughton £7.99
For those who enjoy good solid
detective fiction here is Peter Robinson’s
latest book in the DCI Banks series,
taking its title from the Nick Cave
album. Rural crime seems a little trivial
for our popular detective and his team
as they are tasked to investigate the
theft of a tractor and then some possible
blood stains in a disused aircraft hangar, but soon the
tension cranks up and we are in familiar thriller territory.
Devotees of this series may find the characterisations a
little formulaic now, but for those who dip in and out,
this well plotted novel is just the thing to read on a cold
winter’s evening.
Scarlet Ibis by Gill Lewis
Pub OUP £6.99
Gill’Lewis
So many booksellers that I meet
mention children’s writer Gill Lewis
as their favourite. She draws much
inspiration from the people and the
animals that she has encountered in
her life and travels as a vet, and her
award winning novels Sky Hawk and
Moon Bear reflected her great passion for animals in the
wild. This new book, now in paperback, will be loved by
children who enjoy a wildlife theme which contains an

YS Recipe of the Month
Spaghetti alle Vongole
Clams are a good buy in January and make a terrific healthy supper with an Italian flavour.
Preparation time: 15 minutes
Cooking time: 30 minutes
Serves 4
Ingredients
500g/1lb very small fresh clams, or a small jar of clams in brine
3 tbsp olive oil
1-2 garlic cloves, finely chopped
1 tsp anchovy paste (optional)
2 tbsp finely chopped parsley
400g/14oz canned chopped tomatoes
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
450g/1lb dried spaghetti
Method
If using fresh clams tap each one sharply and discard any which stay open. Scrub the remaining clams.
Add the clams to 2-3 tbsps water in a heavy-bottomed pan. Cover with a lid and cook over a medium heat for
3-4 minutes, or until all the shells have opened. If using fresh clams discard any which have not opened after
five minutes.
Remove the clam flesh from the shells (you can leave a few in their shells for garnish) and dip them quickly into
their cooking water to rinse off any sand. Strain the juices from the pan through a sieve lined with muslin or a
sheet of kitchen paper and reserve the liquid.
Heat the olive oil in a pan over a medium heat. Add the chopped garlic and fry until it begins to turn pale gold
in colour, then add the anchovy paste (if using) and parsley and stir-fry for 30 seconds.
Add the chopped tomatoes and the strained clam juices (if you are using a jar of clams, you can use some or all
of the brine from the jar, but be careful it doesn’t make the sauce too salty). Bring to the boil, then reduce the
heat and simmer for 20-25 minutes.
Cook the spaghetti according to packet instructions and drain.
Just before serving add the clam flesh to the sauce and stir well.
Mix the sauce into the cooked spaghetti. Serve garnished with parsley and any remaining clams in their shells.
