Bulletin for 01/11/2015 - St. Gregory the Great Church
The Gregorian “You are my beloved Son, With you I am well pleased.” January 11, 2015 The Baptism of the Lord Page 2 January 11, 2015 St. Gregory the Great Mission Statement St. Gregory the Great is a Catholic Church made up of people of many different ages, talents, and cultural backgrounds. We are an urban faith community with a small town feel of welcome and hospitality. Motivated by our baptismal calling, we accept our duty to embody the presence of Jesus Christ in the world and to take up the mission he entrusted to us by our word and example. We glorify God through support and service of our time, talent, and treasure to our church and to the larger community in which we live. THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT OF THE MUSIC PROGRAM Dear Friends of Liturgical Music, Here at the beginning of the church year, we ask for your special help of our quality liturgical music program at St. Gregory the Great Church through your financial support. Our choirs, instrumentalists, music staff, and in turn the many people we serve are directly affected by your gifts. Please help us serve others through the ministry of music. Any amount helps! You may send your donation to St. Gregory the Great Church, c/o Patrick Godon, 5545 N Paulina, Chicago, IL 60640, and I will include your name in a future bulletin article. I thank you in advance for your contribution, and extend the wishes from all of us in the music program for a blessed journey through Advent and a joyous arrival at Christmas!—Patrick Godon, Director of Music DID YOU INCLUDE ST. GREGORY ON YOUR CHRISTMAS LIST? Please be generous when making your Christmas offering to St. Gregory this month. We rely on the money you give this time of year, along with weekly offerings, to meet our annual operating expenses. St. Gregory needs $24,000 from the Christmas offering this year to keep within our budget. In the spirit of this holy season, prayerfully consider what you can give to our parish, and be sure to place your offering in the collection basket at the Christmas liturgy or any other Mass this month. May you and your family enjoy a blessed, peaceful Christmas. 2014 Christmas Collection Budget: Amount collected as of 01-06-15: $24,000 $21,868 Readings for the Week Weekly Calendar January 11 (Sunday) 5:00pm—Charismatic prayer group—Baseheart Rm. SPECIAL COLLECTION FOR THE CHURCH IN LATIN AMERICA Catholics in Latin America and the Caribbean face many challenges when it comes to sharing their faith; yet, the light always shines through and hope arises. In the Diocese of Juigalpa, Nicaragua, there was a need to train more staff and volunteers in marriage and family life ministry. Through a grant from the Collection for the Church in Latin America, the diocese was able to build its capacity for sharing the faith by forming family catechetical teams in all of its twenty-two parishes. The Collection for the Church in Latin America, through projects like these, empowers the people of Latin America to deepen their faith and share it with each other and the world. Your generosity to this collection which will be taken up next weekend, Jan. 17-18, 2015, will make a difference in the faith life in Latin America. For more information on how you can help the Church in Latin America, visit www.usccb.org and search “Church in Latin America.” THANK YOU—FROM THE WOMEN’S CENTER The Women’s Center would like to thank all who contributed to the 2014 Christmas Wreath Sale! With the severe winter last year, our order was far less than we normally receive for St. Gregory. We apologize to all those individuals that were disappointed in not being able to purchase their regular order. Hopefully next year will be better. YEAR OF SACRAMENTS—ONE WORD AT A TIME Unite The great and sad effect of Original Sin is that it separated us from God and from each other. The great and wonderful grace of baptism is that it unites us with Christ and each other. Recall what Saint Paul says, “ All of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death…For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his.” (Romans 6:3,5) Baptism unites us to Christ, and that means that his destiny and ours are intertwined. If we want to see how our life will unfold or ought to unfold, we look to him. If we want to see the path that we must traverse, we watch the road that he traveled. Really, the key to our life is given to us in our Baptism. That key is our union with him who is our hope. Page 5 January 11, 2015 ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY After Jesus was baptized, he saw the spirit of God descending like a dove and a voice was heard “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.” As we give to the poor we can also hear these same words. As you place your gift in the Society of St. Vincent de Paul Poor Box, know that you are a sign of God’s love to those who are suffering and you give them reason to believe and trust. MINISTRY OF THE WEEK – USHERS Ushers serve the worshipping community at the 4:30p.m. Mass on Saturday and at the 8:30 and 10:30a.m. Masses on Sunday. Ushers usually serve at one specified Mass either on Saturday evening or on Sunday morning. The contact person for our Ushers is Tom Sullivan, 773-743-1624. TYPHOON HAGUPIT EMERGENCY APPEAL On Dec. 6, Typhoon Hagupit made landfall in the Philippines. Catholic Relief Services has committed $100,000 for relief aid. TO TEACH WHO CHRIST IS CAMPAIGN AND GYM RENOVATION UPDATE Currently, $394,699 has been pledged to the To Teach Who Christ Is Capital Campaign. What this means for our parish is that if all pledges are paid in full, our parish will receive a rebate of $236,819. At this point, we have $66,943 in our TTWCI account at the Archdiocese of Chicago bank. As you know, the majority of funds from this capital campaign have been designated to pay for the installation of a handicapped accessible ramp into the Baseheart Room in the basement of our Gym building and for the renovation of our Social Hall bathrooms. We had hoped that the project would be completed by Christmas, but as is the case with most construction projects, there were a few delays. Currently, the installation of the handicapped ramp is complete, and the work on the Social Hall bathrooms should be completed in the next couple of weeks. The funds for these renovations will come from the pledges you made to our To Teach Who Christ Is Capital Campaign. In light of that, it is important that you complete your pledge over the next three years. When the project is completed, I will invite you to come over to the gym to see the finished product. Thank you for your generosity to the To Teach Who Christ Is Capital Campaign. – Fr. Paul SCRIP PROGRAM All orders placed the previous weekend can be picked up the following weekend at the 4:30pm Mass on Saturday or the 8:30 & 10:30am Mass on Sunday.
