Well this could be your lucky day -‐ because this is an opportunity that will afford you the chance to do exactly that. Hopefully that’s got your attention?! Thank you for your interest in the role of Lead Teacher of PE, and congratulations on taking the first step in what could be a career-‐defining move for you, as part of the pioneering team here at Ealing Fields High School. At this point, you’d be forgiven for thinking “what makes this school so special then, and why should I apply for this job?” It’s simple: the Ealing Fields community is going to be one where, every day, we will achieve remarkable things -‐ in unremarkable ways. How? Because we know that there is more to becoming a great school than just getting excellent exam results. Sure, that’s important -‐ for both students and their teachers, but, as with most things in life – there’s always more to it… On the next page, I have set out what you might call the “mandate” of our school community, but I just wanted to highlight some of the key features of our school, which I hope will chime with the things that you think are important, w hen it comes to the business of educating the minds of the future (and also, so you know what you’re letting yourself in for!). In our vision statement, we talk about our students flourishing; we reiterate the importance of our drivers: mastery, autonomy and purpose. Well, if these aspirations are good enough for our students, then they are good enough for our staff too! Ealing Fields will be a school that will challenge your perceptions of what you thought possible to achieve in the classroom and beyond; encouraging you to care more than others think is right, and risk more than others think is safe. But we will do this by lavishing you with the support you need to become a truly exceptional practitioner. Most importantly, though, we won’t just pay lip service to the notion of staff well-‐being, we will actively place it at the centre of everything we do, in exactly the same way we do for our students. It sounds a bit cheesy, but happy teachers -‐ make a happy school. Our staff will be our single biggest asset, and the success of our students and our school, will depend on them. So, we need to take care of, and invest in them, properly! I’d happily write for pages about what a fantastic opportunity this role is: why you should be as excited as I am about working in the first ever school to be designed on the principles of “Building Learning Power”, a model of learning developed by our Patron, Professor Guy Claxton, a school where every opportunity to give and receive feedback will be grabbed with open arms, a school that expects its values of “Courage, Curiosity and Conviction” to be embodied by every member of staff, so that they, and our students, can grow and truly thrive…I could go on. Instead, I will wish you the very best of luck with your application, and hope that we can continue this conversation during the selection process. If in the meantime, you have any questions about our school, or the role itself, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. As you can tell, I love taking about our school! Best wishes, Lee Faith Headteacher www.ealingfields.co.uk -‐ 3 -‐ Ealing Fields High School Brave Hearts Bold Minds Our Vision: “To develop flourishing students, who possess both cultural capital and academic mastery, whilst holding an impeccable, unshakeable character, and a sense of agency, autonomy and purpose.” Our Pledge: At Ealing Fields High School, “Our Vision” is encapsulated through “Our Pledge”: • Brave Hearts: We will be brave enough to listen to our hearts. • Bold Minds: We will be bold enough to sharpen our minds. It is a co-‐educational, non-‐denominational school for students aged 11-‐19. The first cohort of 120 Year 7 students will join us in September, and the school will then grow over the next seven years, to its planned capacity of 840 students. Building character and skills, and developing young people who will truly flourish, is fundamental to our vision. We know that this is what keeps people happy, successful and fulfilled, and that the ultimate product of character -‐ is a meaningful and productive life. This is a new role in a brand new school. The successful candidate will join our Headteacher, Lee Faith, and the other members of the Senior Leadership Team, as one of the founding members of our teaching staff. They will play a central role in shaping the curriculum, culture and ethos of the school. As such, it represents an incredibly exciting opportunity for a highly skilled and ambitious, qualified teacher. The role would suit someone who is keen to step-‐up into subject leadership, as the school grows, or an existing Head of Department, seeking to broaden his or her experience. The Role: Normally, at this point in a job application pack, you’d start to read about the specifics of the role; what you’re responsible for, what you’ll be doing, and so on. We don’t want to put all our eggs on one basket by saying “We’re just looking for a Head of PE”. Why? Because we don’t want to miss out on someone exceptional. Someone like you, perhaps? Instead, we want to cast our net a little wider. As you can imagine, aside from being an incredible privilege, starting up a new school requires you to be a bit of a “Jack of all trades”! Whilst of course we’re not looking for the “master of none” bit, we do want to appoint, and crucially develop, teachers and leaders who have a thirst to constantly refine their craft, so that every day, they can be the very best they can – because that’s what we want to model to our students. As one of the founding teachers at Ealing Fields High School, I can’t promise you a definitive “task list”, that you’ll be held to, every day/week/term…and so on… What I can promise you is this; as one of the founding teachers of Ealing Fields High School, whether we appoint you as Head of PE or the Lead Teacher of PE, we want to ensure you have the opportunity to make your mark on our school, and leave a legacy that you, your students, and all those in our community, will be proud of for years to come. So how will that work? Your role as a teacher and leader: Clearly, as we are a brand-‐new school, your role will evolve considerably over the next five years as the school grows to scale. In the first year, you will be the only PE Teacher; so will teach all four Year 7 classes. Additionally, you will be preparing the Year 8 curriculum for September 2016, and helping develop the longer-‐term plans for the Department, including helping me recruit colleagues, who will join you in September 2016. Whether you are appointed as Head of PE, or the Lead Teacher of PE, you’re the expert in your subject -‐ and this is your chance to prove it! This is a unique opportunity for you to help shape the curriculum in the way you see fit, and you will be able to build the department around your ambitions, and assist in recruiting colleagues you believe will be aligned to, and are capable of, achieving those ambitions. It would be remiss of me not to talk about the challenges that we will face together, along the way. There will be many of them! Starting a department from scratch is a phenomenal prospect for you to put in place all those superb ideas you’ve conceived in your career so far, but had to put on hold because of the constraints associated with being in an established school. But it will also throw up unexpected obstacles, and will require a much higher level of innovation, creativity and above all, flexibility than most teaching roles. The right candidate for this job will, we hope, see that as a positive thing, but a willingness to “roll your sleeves up and muck in” across the school, to ensure we realise our vision, is an absolute must. www.ealingfields.co.uk -‐ 5 -‐ Ealing Fields High School Brave Hearts Bold Minds Your wider role in the school: As one of the founding teachers at Ealing Fields High School, you will be the “engine room” of our school, acting as the levers for change and whole-‐school development. You should embody exemplary leadership behaviours and practices, both with your peers and to other colleagues, and act as a role model for those wishing to develop their own leadership skills. You will be able to strike a balance between “fighting your corner” -‐ as a subject specialist, and seeing the “big picture”, in terms of supporting the holistic needs of the school. In addition to your subject specific responsibilities, you would be expected to play an active role in the life of the School. In particular, subject to timetabling, we expect all of our staff to be willing to serve as tutors to form groups of students, and to be able to play an active and committed role in our enrichment programme. www.ealingfields.co.uk -‐ 6 -‐ Ealing Fields High School Brave Hearts Bold Minds Application Process: If you like the sound of the challenge outlined above, then we would really like to hear from you. To apply, please complete an application form giving us all the usual information about yourself, w h ich we require, along with two referees one of whom must be your current employer. Completed application forms should be sent by email to: efhs@tpp.co.uk . Please do not send in any additional documentation with your application. We are not asking for standard “letters of application‟ because we do not think that such letters, which often tend to be rather generic, will tell us what we need to know about candidates before we decide whether or not to meet them. Instead of such a letter, we would therefore like you to write responses to the two tasks outlined below. Please insert your answers into the “support of application‟ page on the application form. Task 1: (500 words m ax): Describe a cracking lesson you taught last term: • What made it successful? • What was the impact it had on the learning and progress of students (either in the lesson itself, or over time), and how did you know? Task 2: (500 words m ax): Describe a lesson you taught last term that did not go as you’d planned: • What didn’t work? • Why not? • What would you do next time in order to ensure it went as planned? rd The deadline for applications is Friday 23 January 2015, at 12 noon. th th First round interviews for long-‐listed candidates will take place between Thursday 5 February and Thursday 12 February. Shortlisted candidates will then be visited in their current schools (wherever possible), for a “Teach-‐Reteach”, in the rd week commencing 23 February. If you would like an informal discussion about the role prior to sending us your application, please contact our Headteacher, Lee Faith: lee.faith@ealingfields.co.uk www.ealingfields.co.uk -‐ 7 -‐ Ealing Fields High School Brave Hearts Bold Minds Person Specification Qualifications Experience Knowledge Skills Essential Desirable • Qualified to at least degree level. • Further professional qualifications (for example; Masters). • Qualified to teach in the UK. • Qualified to work in the UK. • QTS or equivalent. • Evidence of relevant and substantial CPD. • Ability to deliver consistently high quality • Experience of having led and lessons in this subject, to students of all ages managed a high-‐performing team, and abilities. ideally, but not necessarily, in an educational context. • Proven record of significantly raising achievement with all groups of students • Working at middle leadership level. across the age and ability range, and of • Having led a team in the helping them achieve impressive development and implementation of examination outcomes. a curriculum initiative that had a • Proven commitment to continued sustained and demonstrable impact professional development and a readiness to on student progress. reflect and self-‐evaluate to change, improve • Successful experience of working and develop. particularly with higher ability students, and students with Special • Experience of having designed, implemented and evaluated effective, imaginative and Educational Needs. stimulating schemes of work. • Delivering staff training and undertaking the professional development of other teachers, in particular with regard to high quality teaching, assessment, marking and feedback, questioning, lesson planning and scheme of work writing, and other elements of exceptional subject leadership. • Thorough knowledge of the requirements of • Thorough knowledge of any relevant the new National Curriculum in the subject.
